The Prunus incisa 'Koujou-no-mai' is a dwarf flowering cherry whose branches grow in a zigzag pattern, creating an angular framework visible all year round. Native to the mountains of Japan, it is the only one of the patio shrubs that remains decorative once bare.
Its special feature is that it offers four seasons of interest: pinkish-white flowers in March on bare wood, soft green foliage in summer, orange and red tones in autumn, then the zigzag silhouette of its bare branches throughout winter. Its Japanese name means dance of the old pagoda, referring to this twisted framework.
Light & placement
Prunus incisa flowers abundantly in both sun and partial shade. However, its very early bloom remains vulnerable to March frosts, which can turn the petals brown overnight.
- Light: sun to partial shade — 4 hours of direct sun are enough for abundant flowering.
- Placement: patio, entrance, pathway, balcony — avoid east-facing positions, where the morning sun can scorch frost-damaged flowers.
- Hardiness in a pot: down to -20 °C.
- Soil type: well-drained and moist — planting compost mixed with sand, without excess lime.
The zigzag framework only becomes noticeable once the leaves have fallen: this tree is at its most graphic in winter, set against a light wall or open sky.
Watering & care
The flowering cherry needs a moist but never waterlogged substrate, as its roots are sensitive to suffocation. A well-drained substrate is essential in a pot, and the foliage always signals a problem before it gets worse.
- Watering: regular from April to September — twice a week in summer, greatly reduced once the leaves have fallen.
- Drainage: essential — never leave standing water in the saucer.
- Pruning: avoid whenever possible — the zigzag framework is natural, and pruning destroys it. Remove only dead wood in February.
- Suckers: remove shoots that appear along the trunk, as they compromise the standard form.
- Fertiliser: fertiliser for flowering shrubs, once at the beginning of spring.
Prunus heal poorly and are susceptible to disease through pruning wounds: the less you cut them, the better they thrive.
Decorating ideas & plant pairings
This is a tree to appreciate up close: the fine branches and delicate flowers call for a prominent position on a patio rather than at the back of a garden.
- For a Japanese-inspired spring display, pair it with Magnolia stellata — two white March blooms on bare wood, one star-shaped and the other in small cups.
- To bring interest to winter, place a standard bay tree beside it — its evergreen foliage provides a backdrop for the bare framework of the Prunus.
- To extend the flowering season, add a dwarf lilac 'Palibin' — the Prunus flowers in March, and the lilac takes over in May.
- To enhance the pot, a container in terracotta or natural fibre keeps the substrate moist and complements the tree's natural style.
Lit from the side in winter, the tree projects the angular pattern of its framework onto the wall: it is one of the few patio shrubs that is just as interesting without leaves.

- Do not prune it: the zigzag framework that gives this cultivar its appeal is natural. Every cut straightens it and makes the silhouette less distinctive. Only dead wood should be removed, in February.
- Do not place it facing east: a March night frost followed by morning sun can turn the flowers brown within a few hours. A west- or south-facing position gives the petals time to thaw gently.
- Keep the substrate moist in summer: potted Prunus quickly suffer from drought and lose their leaves prematurely, eliminating the autumn colours. Mulching helps limit evaporation.
