❤️ Red heart-shaped veined leaves • 🌿 Spectacular and colorful foliage • ☀️ Bright partial shade • 💧 Substrate always moist • 🌡️ High humidity • 📏 H25 cm | Pot Ø12 cm
The Caladium 'Rouge' — also called Angel Wing or Heart of Jesus — displays spectacular heart-shaped foliage in a deep red crossed by darker veins and edged with green. Native to the tropical forests of South America, it naturally ranks among the stars for creating an indoor jungle with a flamboyant character.
Special cycle: the Caladium is a dormant plant — the foliage fades and disappears in autumn, the tuber rests during winter and restarts in spring with new, even more colorful leaves. A seasonal plant experienced as a decorative event, to be renewed each year.
Exposure & location
Native to the tropical understory, the Caladium naturally grows in filtered light. Prolonged direct sun fades its foliage and burns the leaf edges.
-
Exposure: bright partial shade — avoid prolonged direct sun, especially in summer.
- Location: living room, office, bright bathroom — away from heat sources and cold drafts.
- Temperature: 18 to 26 °C in season — minimum 16 °C, sensitive to sudden changes.
- Soil type: rich, light, moisture-retentive — a mix of potting soil and peat with some perlite added.
The more generous but filtered the light, the more pronounced the foliage colors and intense the contrasts — in insufficient light, new leaves tend to lose their characteristic brightness.
Watering & care
A tropical understory plant, the Caladium requires a constantly moist substrate throughout its growing season. Finding the right balance between light and humidity is key to healthy foliage, and watering indoor plants demands special attention for moisture-loving species.
- Watering: regular — substrate always moist during the growing season, about every 3 to 5 days.
- Drainage: essential — water must never stagnate in the saucer.
- Humidity: high — spray the foliage regularly or place the pot on a tray of moist clay pebbles.
- Fertilizer: liquid fertilizer for green plants every 4 to 6 weeks during growth, stop at the end of summer.
- Winter dormancy: gradually stop watering as soon as the foliage starts to yellow in autumn, keep the tuber dry in its pot at 15-18 °C until it restarts in spring.
To restart growth in spring, bring the tuber out of dormancy by gradually increasing light, warmth, and watering — the first leaves appear in 2 to 4 weeks depending on ambient temperature.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
The deep red and graphic veins of the Caladium make it a star of tropical atmosphere plant combinations: a single plant is enough to transform a corner of a room into a jungle evocation.
- For a tropical Marantaceae trio, pair the Caladium with a Stromanthe Triostar with pink-green-white foliage and a Maranta Fascinator with green foliage veined red — three different graphic rhythms, same humidity and warmth needs, coherent red-pink palette.
- For a flamboyant duo, match it with a red Anthurium Andreanum with glossy bright red spathes — two flamboyant tropical references, the matte red of Caladium foliage responding to the shiny red of Anthurium spathes for a striking plant corner.
- To soften the red with neutral foliage, add an Asparagus Sprengeri with soft green feathery foliage that slightly droops — the delicacy of the light foliage balances the graphic rigor of the red hearts, creating a refined tropical balance.
- To enhance the red in a tone-on-tone decorative pot, place the Caladium in a Gabriel ceramic decorative pot Bordeaux Ø14 cm that extends the warm tone of the foliage, or in a Capi Nature Skin anthracite pot with a matte finish to make the red stand out by sober contrast.
Group the Caladium with other moisture-loving tropicals (Calathea, Maranta, Stromanthe) on the same shelf: their shared evapotranspiration creates a humid microclimate that protects them all from brown leaf edges.
Verdeia Tips
- Accept winter dormancy: do not throw away the plant when the foliage disappears in autumn — it is a natural cycle, not plant death. Simply keep the tuber dry in its pot, in a room at 15-18 °C, until it spontaneously restarts in spring.
- Maintain constant ambient humidity: the Caladium hates dry air and immediately reacts with irreversible brown leaf edges — spray the foliage every two days in season or place the plant near a humidifier, especially in winter when heating dries indoor air.
- Choose a warm and stable location: avoid poorly insulated window sills and corridors where temperature can drop below 16 °C — the Caladium is one of the tropicals most sensitive to cold, and a single cold snap can compromise the entire growing season.
