Frequently Asked Questions
How do I make a Schefflera bushier? Pinch the tips of the stems in spring just above a leaf node — the plant will then branch out sideways instead of growing taller. Repeat this every spring for a denser shape.
Can Schefflera tolerate dry apartment air? Yes — unlike many tropical plants, Schefflera tolerates dry heated indoor air very well. This is one of its big advantages over ferns or Calathea, which require high humidity.

🌿 Shiny green foliage in umbels • 🌳 Compact bushy habit • ☀️ Bright indirect light • 💧 Moderate watering • ✨ Easy to care for • 🩴 2 sizes available • 📏 H80 cm | Pot Ø19 cm or H120 cm | Pot Ø27 cm
Schefflera arboricola 'Compacta', also called Compact umbrella tree, displays small, deep shiny green leaves arranged in characteristic umbels around upright stems. Native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia, this compact variety with dense foliage forms a balanced bush and is among the easiest tropical indoor plants in the catalog.
Its uniqueness compared to other Schefflera: uniformly deep green foliage without variegation, smaller and denser leaves, and a naturally bushy habit that requires no pruning to maintain its graphic shape. It is the most versatile Schefflera, available in two sizes to suit any room.
Light & Location
Schefflera Compacta enjoys bright indirect light that preserves the shiny brilliance of its foliage. It tolerates partial shade, but insufficient light slows growth and thins the foliage. Avoid prolonged direct sun that burns the delicate leaves.
- Light: bright indirect light — sheer curtain window or near a bay window, without prolonged direct sun.
- Location: living room, office, bedroom, bright entrance — away from radiators and drafts.
- Temperature: 18 to 25 °C — minimum 13 °C in winter, without sudden changes.
- Soil type: light, rich, and well-draining — universal potting soil for green plants mixed with perlite or coconut fiber.
Rotate the pot a quarter turn every 2 to 3 weeks to maintain a balanced shape — Schefflera grows toward the light and can quickly become asymmetrical.
Watering & Care
Schefflera Compacta prefers moderate and regular watering, never excessive. Overwatering is among the most common mistakes with this plant: it is better to have a slightly dry substrate than a soggy one.
- Watering: moderate — let the top 2 to 3 cm of substrate dry out between waterings, about once a week in spring and summer.
- Drainage: essential — always empty the saucer to prevent water stagnation and root rot.
- Humidity: tolerates dry indoor air but appreciates occasional misting in winter.
- Fertilizer: liquid fertilizer for green plants diluted by half, once a month from March to September.
- Pruning: pinch stem tips in spring to encourage branching and maintain a bushy, balanced habit.
- Repotting: every 2 to 3 years in spring into a slightly larger pot.
Dust the shiny leaves monthly with a soft damp cloth — this improves photosynthesis and preserves the foliage’s characteristic shine.
Decor Ideas & Plant Pairings
With its shiny umbel foliage and compact habit, Schefflera Compacta adds a graphic tropical touch. To create a relaxing green corner, it pairs well with many tropical plants with contrasting foliage.
- For a contrasting Schefflera duo, pair it with a Schefflera 'Gold Capella' with variegated green and golden yellow foliage — the uniform green of the Compacta highlights the bright variegation of the Gold Capella in a lively composition.
- For a colorful tropical jungle, surround it with a Philodendron 'Imperial Red' with deep red foliage and a Calathea Makoyana with stained-glass patterns — three textures and three palettes that harmonize without overwhelming the space.
- For an architectural silhouette, combine it with a Yucca living room palm with a slender habit — the graphic verticality of the Yucca complements the bushy habit of the Schefflera in a balanced duo.
- To highlight the shiny foliage, place it in a Gabriel ochre ceramic decorative pot with a honeycomb finish — the warm brown ochre warms the deep green and creates a Mediterranean atmosphere.
The H120 cm size is ideal as a floor centerpiece near a sofa, while the H80 cm size fits perfectly on a console, sideboard, or in a corner of an office.
Verdeia Tips
- Pinch tips in spring: cut the tips of new stems by 2 to 3 cm to stimulate branching — this simple action naturally densifies the habit and maintains the bushy silhouette characteristic of the Compacta.
- Prefer a slightly dry substrate: Schefflera poorly tolerates stagnant moisture. When in doubt about watering timing, wait an extra day or two rather than risk overwatering.
- Propagate cuttings: stems cut in spring during pinching root easily in a glass of water or directly in a light substrate — a simple way to multiply the plant.
