🤍 White heart-shaped leaves veined with green • 🌿 Pure tropical elegance • ☀️ Bright partial shade • 💧 Substrate always moist • 🌡️ High humidity • 📏 H25 cm | Pot Ø12 cm
Caladium 'Blanc' — also called Angel Wing or Heart of Jesus — displays bright white heart-shaped foliage finely veined with soft green, sometimes marked with red spots at the center of the leaf blade. Native to the tropical forests of South America, it is one of the most striking decorative foliage plants: its bright contrast brings clarity and tropical elegance to a corner of a room.
Unique cycle: Caladium is a dormancy plant — the foliage fades and disappears in autumn, the tuber rests during winter, and restarts in spring with new, even more colorful leaves. A seasonal plant experienced as a decorative event to renew each year.
Light & placement
Native to the tropical understory, Caladium naturally grows in filtered light. Prolonged direct sun fades the foliage and burns leaf edges.
- Light: bright partial shade — avoid prolonged direct sun, especially in summer.
- Placement: living room, office, bright bathroom — away from heat sources and cold drafts.
- Temperature: 18 to 26 °C in season — minimum 16 °C, sensitive to sudden changes.
- Soil type: rich, light, moisture-retentive — a mix of potting soil and peat with some perlite added.
The white variety particularly reveals its brightness in a relatively dark room — placed 1 to 2 meters from a window, it acts as a natural light spot that brightens the corner.
Watering & care
A tropical understory plant, Caladium requires a constantly moist substrate throughout its growing season. If the foliage shows browned edges or spots, the common symptom diagnosis helps quickly identify the cause — most often a moisture problem in the substrate or air.
- Watering: regular — substrate always moist during the growing season, about every 3 to 5 days.
- Drainage: essential — water must never stagnate in the saucer.
- Humidity: high — spray the foliage regularly or place the pot on a tray of moist clay pebbles.
- Fertilizer: liquid fertilizer for green plants every 4 to 6 weeks during growth, stop at the end of summer.
- Winter dormancy: gradually stop watering as soon as the foliage starts yellowing in autumn, keep the tuber dry in its pot at 15-18 °C until it restarts in spring.
To restart growth in spring, bring the tuber out of dormancy by gradually increasing light, warmth, and watering — the first leaves appear in 2 to 4 weeks depending on ambient temperature.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The bright white and graphic veins of Caladium make it a chameleon plant, fitting equally well in minimalist decor or among ideal indoor plants for each room, especially in spaces with slightly low light.
- For a tropical trio in white-green shades, pair Caladium with a Spathiphyllum Bingo Cupido with elegant white spathes and a Calathea Orbifolia with round silver foliage — three distinct forms, same humidity needs, clear and soothing palette.
- To highlight brightness in a clean bedroom, add a Ficus elastica Tineke with cream-pink variegated foliage — the contrast between the round white hearts and the vertical oval leaves of the Ficus creates a graphic duo without saturating the color palette.
- For a graphic trailing touch, complete with a Scindapsus Pictus Trebie with silver-spotted foliage hanging above the Caladium — the Pothos spots echo the green veins of the Caladium for a refined tropical dialogue.
- To enhance the whiteness in a tone-on-tone decorative pot, place the Caladium in a Elho Vibes Fold white decorative pot Ø22 cm with a matte finish that amplifies the foliage brightness, or in a Celestial jute decorative pot Ø20 cm to add a natural and warm note.
Group Caladium with other moisture-loving tropicals (Calathea, Maranta, Spathiphyllum) on the same shelf: their shared evapotranspiration creates a humid microclimate that protects them all from browned leaf edges.
Verdeia tips
- Accept winter dormancy: do not discard the plant when the foliage disappears in autumn — it is a natural cycle, not plant death. Simply keep the tuber dry in its pot, in a room at 15-18 °C, until it restarts spontaneously in spring.
- Maintain constant ambient humidity: Caladium hates dry air and reacts immediately with irreversible browned leaf edges — spray the foliage every two days in season or place the plant near a humidifier, especially in winter when heating dries indoor air.
- Choose a warm and stable location: avoid poorly insulated window sills and corridors where temperature can drop below 16 °C — Caladium is one of the tropicals most sensitive to cold, and a single cold snap can compromise the entire growing season.
