Frequently Asked Questions
When does Wisteria sinensis 'Prolific' bloom? A first large bloom from April to June on bare wood before the leaves, then a second, smaller wave in late summer — this double flowering period is the main characteristic of the 'Prolific' variety.
How to prune a 'Prolific' wisteria to maximize flowering? Two prunings per year: in July-August, shorten new shoots to 5–6 leaves, then in January-February, shorten the same branches to 2–3 buds — without this double schedule, the wisteria produces foliage but few flowers.

💜 Long fragrant blue-violet clusters • 🌿 Early and repeat flowering • ☀️ Full sun to partial shade • ❄️ Hardy to −15 °C • 📏 H65 cm | Pot Ø15 cm
Wisteria sinensis 'Prolific' is a blue wisteria native to China, known as one of the most floriferous varieties of the genus. Its long fragrant blue-violet clusters cascade from spring on balconies, terraces, and pergolas — even before the leaves appear.
Vigorous and hardy to −15 °C, it differs from 'Caroline' by its ability to bloom again in late summer, offering a second wave of fragrant clusters.
Which Wisteria variety to choose?
Wisteria sinensis 'Prolific' stands out from other wisterias in the catalog by its repeat flowering and extreme vigor. All varieties are available in the catalog:
- Wisteria sinensis 'Prolific' (this plant) — abundant blue-violet clusters, early and repeat flowering, very vigorous. The most floriferous blue version.
- Wisteria sinensis 'Caroline' — very fragrant purple clusters, early flowering before the leaves. The classic most fragrant purple version.
- Wisteria floribunda 'Alba' — very long white clusters delicately scented, slightly later flowering. The pure and elegant white version.
- Wisteria floribunda 'Rosea' — pale pink very fragrant clusters, elegant habit. The romantic pink version.
- Wisteria floribunda 'Naga Noda' — exceptionally long double purple clusters. The most sumptuous version.
Exposure & location
'Prolific' wisteria thrives in full sun — this is the main condition for abundant and repeat flowering. In partial shade, it languishes and produces few flowers. Like all Wisteria sinensis, it blooms on bare wood before the leaves in spring, making it spectacular from the first warm days.
- Exposure: full sun — minimum 6 hours per day for optimal flowering.
- Support: trellis, arch, pergola, fence, or wall — must be sturdy and well anchored.
- Soil: fresh, well-drained, slightly calcareous.
- In a pot: deep and heavy container to stabilize its vigorous growth.
In a pot, choose a container at least 40 cm deep — its strong roots need space, and a pot that is too small directly limits flowering and plant vigor.
Watering & care
Pruning is the essential care for 'Prolific' wisteria — twice a year to stimulate flowering and control its vigor. Water regularly in pots, especially during the first year. Semi-woody cuttings taken in summer root easily. If leaves yellow out of season, check drainage and nutrient supply.
- Watering: regular in pots for the first two years, moderate afterwards.
- Summer pruning: July-August — shorten new shoots to 5–6 leaves.
- Winter pruning: January-February — shorten the same branches to 2–3 buds.
- Fertilizer: low nitrogen in spring — never use nitrogen-rich fertilizer that promotes foliage at the expense of flowers.
If your wisteria does not flower, the two almost exclusive causes are excess nitrogen in the soil and insufficient sunlight — stop nitrogen fertilizers and move it to a sunnier location.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
The blue-violet of the 'Prolific' clusters and their drooping habit create a romantic and Mediterranean atmosphere. Its early flowering on bare wood in spring is one of the most striking plant displays of the season.
- For a two-tone wisteria duo, the white Wisteria floribunda 'Alba' complements the blue 'Prolific' on the same support — the two colors contrast elegantly and 'Alba' flowers slightly later to extend the season.
- For a fragrant blue and white curtain on a pergola, the evergreen white Trachelospermum 'Star of Venice' covers the lower part of the wall after the wisteria leafs out — its evergreen foliage compensates for the winter bareness of the deciduous wisteria.
- For a blue-violet and red combination, the Climbing Rose Crazy in Love Red interacts with the blue of the wisteria — the two climbers alternate on the same support, wisteria from April to June then the rose from June to autumn.
- For a spring purple and white composition, the purple Clematis 'The President' extends the floral palette of the wisteria until September — two slightly different purples that complement each other for a very dense floral wall.
Verdeia Tips
- Install a very sturdy support from planting: 'Prolific' is one of the most vigorous wisterias — a pergola, arch, or trellis must be firmly anchored before planting, as an adult wisteria can exert considerable pressure on light structures.
- Guide the main stems horizontally from the first year: stems oriented horizontally or in a fan produce more clusters than vertical stems — this early orientation technique is crucial for flowering density in following years.
- Strictly follow the double pruning schedule: prune in July-August to 5–6 leaves then in January-February to 2–3 buds — without this biennial rhythm, wisteria produces abundant foliage but few flowers, regardless of exposure.
