🌿 Spectacular white-silver veins • 🎨 Shiny dark green arrow-shaped leaves • ☀️ Bright indirect light • 💧 Moderate watering • 📏 H30 cm | Pot Ø12 cm — H45 cm | Pot Ø17 cm
Alocasia Polly, also called Elephant Ear, is a graphic and elegant plant known for its shiny dark green arrow-shaped leaves with very pronounced white-silver veins that create a striking contrast. The most popular Alocasia variety in our collection — both accessible and spectacular.
Native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia (horticultural hybrid), Alocasia × amazonica 'Polly' naturally grows in humid, shaded undergrowth. Everything you need to know to succeed with this species is gathered in our complete guide to Alocasias — watering, humidity, winter rest period.
Which Alocasia variety to choose?
The Alocasia genus offers a great diversity of shapes and sizes — here’s how Alocasia Polly stands out from other compact varieties in the catalog:
- Alocasia Polly (this plant) — dark green arrow-shaped leaves with very pronounced white-silver veins. The classic graphic and most accessible version.
- Alocasia Bambino Arrow — smaller and narrower arrow-shaped leaves, less marked veins. The miniature and more discreet version.
- Alocasia Dragon Scale — thick leaves with silver veined scale effect, very pronounced textured relief. The textured and rare version.
- Alocasia Red Secret — shiny burgundy red leaves turning to dark green with coppery reflections. The spectacular colored version.
- Alocasia Jacklyn — deeply lobed leaves with a prehistoric look, very graphic. The rarest lobed version.
- Alocasia Lukiwan — silver leaves with dark green veins, very graphic inverted effect. The rare silver version.
- Alocasia Zebrina — spectacular striped stems, dark green foliage. The version with the most decorative stems.
Exposure & location
The Alocasia Polly needs good indirect light to maintain the intensity of its silver-white veins — brightness determines whether the contrast remains spectacular or gradually fades.
- Exposure: bright indirect light to partial shade — avoid direct sun that burns the leaves.
- Ideal: office, shelf, living room, or bedroom with a well-exposed window without direct sun.
- Temperature: 18 to 27 °C, without sudden changes or drafts.
- Substrate: light, airy, and well-draining — universal potting soil mixed with perlite.
The brighter the light (without direct sun), the more striking the silver-white veins and the more dramatic the contrast with the dark green.
Watering & care
The Alocasia Polly is sensitive to overwatering — soggy substrate quickly causes yellowing leaves and rhizome rot. Good watering practices are especially important for this species.
- Watering: moderate — let the top 2 to 3 cm of substrate dry out between waterings.
- Frequency: about once a week in spring-summer, every 2 weeks in winter.
- Drainage: essential — use a pot with drainage holes and well-draining substrate.
- Humidity: prefers 60–70% humidity — mist occasionally or place near other plants.
- Fertilizer: once a month in spring-summer with a diluted liquid fertilizer for green plants.
- Cleaning: gently wipe the leaves with a damp cloth to preserve their shine and veins.
It is normal for the Alocasia Polly to lose a lower leaf when producing a new one — this is its natural cycle, not a sign of poor health.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
With its silver-white veins on a dark green background, the Alocasia Polly brings strong graphics to plant arrangements — it naturally pairs with plants that have patterned or textured foliage for sophisticated tropical compositions.
- Create a trio of graphic foliage by pairing the Alocasia Polly with a Calathea Lancifolia with narrow patterned leaves and an Anthurium Crystallinum with pearly veins — three plants with very pronounced veins in three very different leaf directions.
- In the H30 cm | Pot Ø12 format, place it on a desk or shelf in the white relief ceramic decorative pot Ø13.5 cm — the matte white maximizes contrast with the shiny dark green foliage.
- In H45 cm | Pot Ø17 size, place it in a living room corner in the decorative pot Elho Brussels Anthracite Ø20 cm — the anthracite gray emphasizes the graphic sharpness of the silvery-white veins.
- Pair it with a Alocasia Dragon Scale with raised silvery veins and a smaller Alocasia Bambino Arrow — three Alocasias, three vein intensities, a composition fully in style.
Verdeia tips
- Maintain high humidity: in heated apartments during winter, dry air causes browning of leaf edges — mist 2 to 3 times a week or place a humidifier nearby to compensate.
- Wipe the leaves once a month: dust on the shiny dark green surfaces dulls the contrast with the silvery veins — gently wiping each leaf with a damp cloth instantly restores the graphic brilliance of the foliage.
- Repot every 2 years in spring: into a slightly larger pot with fresh, well-draining substrate — properly done, repotting stimulates the growth of new leaves with even more pronounced veins.
