Frequently Asked Questions
Why are the needles on my Asparagus falling off? Almost always a lack of water or light. First, check that the soil is not dry and that the location is bright enough. An atmosphere that is too dry in winter can also trigger the drop — occasionally mist the foliage.
Is Asparagus Densiflorus toxic to pets? Yes, the red berries it can produce are toxic if ingested by cats and dogs. Keep the plant out of reach of your pets, especially when it is fruiting.

🌿 Dense, airy ball-shaped habit • 🎨 Fine bright green foliage • ☀️ Bright indirect light • 💧 Regular watering • 📏 H65 cm | Pot Ø27 cm • ⚠️ Toxic to animals
The Asparagus Densiflorus 'Cwebe' is a perennial plant native to South Africa with thin, flexible stems covered in tiny bright green needles. Its wide, dense, and airy ball-shaped habit gives it a generous and natural character — a green cloud that spreads horizontally in space. Impressive size H65 cm | Pot Ø27 cm.
Vigorous growth, tolerant of cool temperatures. Note: the red berries it may produce are toxic to animals. Discover it in our selection of airy foliage plants.
Which Asparagus variety to choose?
The four Asparagus varieties in our catalog have very distinct habits:
- Asparagus Densiflorus 'Cwebe' (this plant) — wide, dense ball-shaped habit with spreading stems, H65 cm | Pot Ø27 cm. The most voluminous and generous.
- Asparagus Densiflorus 'Meyers' — upright stems in a compact plume, H50 cm | Pot Ø17 cm. The most structured and vertical.
- Asparagus Sprengeri — graceful cascading trailing habit, H35 cm | Pot Ø17 cm. The only one suitable for hanging baskets.
- Asparagus Setaceus — ultra-fine, airy foliage with a delicate climbing habit. The most ethereal.
The Cwebe is the perfect choice for a generous large size — where the Meyers grows vertically, the Cwebe spreads out horizontally in a ball shape.
Exposure & location
- Ideal exposure: bright indirect light — near an east- or west-facing window.
- Tolerates: light partial shade and cool temperatures (10–25 °C).
- Avoid: harsh direct sunlight, too deep shade that weakens the foliage.
- Space: its H65 cm size | Pot Ø27 cm requires space — allow at least 70 cm of available width.
- Soil: light and well-drained — universal potting soil with perlite.
Its wide rounded shape makes it especially effective placed on the floor in a bright corner — it naturally occupies the space without support or shelf. Check our light and humidity guide to find the right spot.
Watering & care
- Watering: regular — keep the soil slightly moist without ever soaking it.
- Frequency: 1 to 2 times per week in spring and summer, reduced in winter.
- Drainage: pot must have drainage holes, empty the saucer after watering.
- Humidity: occasionally mist the foliage in very dry air.
- Fertilizer: diluted liquid green plant fertilizer, once a month in spring and summer.
- Pruning: remove yellowed or dry stems at the base to maintain a neat appearance.
Never let the soil dry out completely — needles yellow and fall quickly under water stress. Check our complete watering guide to adjust the frequency.
Decor ideas
Its generous rounded shape creates a strong plant presence — a plant that structures the space without even needing to be highlighted.
- On the floor in a corner: placed in a bright corner, its airy foliage naturally spills over and fills the space lightly.
- In arrangements: pair it with plants that have broad, graphic leaves — Monstera, Ficus — for a very effective fine/large texture contrast.
- Ideal pot: matte white ceramic or terracotta — simple containers highlight the foliage without competing with it.
Turn the pot a quarter turn every 2-3 weeks for even ball growth.
Verdeia tips
- Falling needles: warning sign — massive needle drop = lack of water, humidity, or light. Identify the cause before correcting. Dry substrate and too dark a location are the two most common causes.
- Vigorous growth to manage — repot every 2 to 3 years in spring into a slightly larger pot to maintain vigor.
- Prefers cool conditions — it prefers moderate temperatures between 15 and 20 °C. A cool room suits it perfectly. See our new plant welcome guide to get started right.
- ⚠️ Toxic to pets — red berries are toxic if ingested by cats and dogs. Keep out of reach. See our plants and pets guide for suitable alternatives.
