Frequently Asked Questions
When are Brown Turkey figs ripe? The main harvest takes place in August-September. The figs are ripe when they feel soft to the touch, tilt slightly downward, and come off the stem easily. A small early harvest may appear in June-July on the previous year's wood depending on the climate conditions.
Why choose Brown Turkey over another fig variety? Brown Turkey is the ideal choice if you live in a region with cold winters or if your outdoor space is exposed. It is the hardiest variety in our catalog, with resistance down to -15°C — other varieties generally tolerate down to -10°C. Its production is also particularly reliable and consistent from year to year.

🍇 Delicious brown-purple figs • ☀️ Sun to partial shade • 💧 Moderate watering • 📏 H40 cm | Pot Ø15 cm • ❄️ Ultra-hardy -15°C • 🐾 Non-toxic
The Ficus carica 'Brown Turkey' is the hardiest fig variety in our catalog — it withstands down to -15 °C and can stay outdoors year-round even in regions with cold winters. Its brown-purple figs are tasty, and the yield is abundant and reliable year after year.
A Mediterranean fruit shrub without compromise for balconies and terraces exposed to cold. Discover it in our selection of fruit and aromatic plants and our balconies and terraces collection.
Which fig tree variety should you choose?
Each fig tree has its strengths — hardiness, earliness, compactness, or ornamental foliage. Here’s how the Brown Turkey ranks in our fig tree collection:
- Ficus carica 'Brown Turkey' (this plant) — ultra-hardy down to -15 °C, brown-purple figs, reliable production. The most cold-resistant.
- Ficus carica 'Précoce de Dalmatie' — harvest from June-July, dark purple figs. The earliest.
- Ficus carica 'Panaché' — unique green and cream marbled foliage. The most ornamental.
- Ficus carica 'Little Miss Figgy' — very productive dwarf variety, perfect for small spaces. The most compact.
- Ficus carica 'Bornholm' — compact shape, dark purple figs, ideal for balconies. The balanced option.
The Brown Turkey is the only fig tree in our catalog that can withstand down to -15 °C — if you live in a region with cold winters or your balcony is exposed, this is the safest choice.
Exposure & location
The Ficus carica 'Brown Turkey' is a Mediterranean fig tree — hardy against cold, but always needs sun for good fruiting.
- Ideal exposure: full sun to partial shade — minimum 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.
- Location: sunny balcony or terrace, facing south or southwest.
- Hardiness: very hardy down to -15 °C — can stay outdoors year-round without protection in most regions.
- Soil: rich and well-drained — potting soil for fruit trees or enriched universal potting mix.
- Pot: minimum 30–40 cm diameter for good root development.
Its exceptional hardiness does not replace the need for sun — without at least 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight per day, fruiting will be reduced even in this hardy variety.
Watering & care
- Watering: moderate — allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings.
- Frequency: 1 to 2 times per week in summer, reduced in winter. More frequent watering during fruiting.
- Drainage: pot must have drainage holes — no standing water in the saucer.
- Fertilizer: once a month in spring and summer with a liquid fertilizer for fruit trees.
- Pruning: light pruning in late winter (February-March) to maintain a compact shape and encourage fruiting. Do not prune in autumn.
- Repotting: every 2–3 years in spring into a slightly larger pot.
Although drought-tolerant once established, water regularly during fig formation and growth — lack of water causes premature fruit drop. See our new plant care guide to get started right.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
Its large dark green lobed leaves and brown-purple figs create a robust and productive Mediterranean composition — even on north-facing or cold balconies.
- Urban vegetable garden: combine it with lavender, rosemary, or thyme for a coherent and resilient Mediterranean urban garden corner.
- Fruit duo: pair it with an organic raspberry to stagger harvests throughout the summer season.
- Ideal pot: natural terracotta or wood — warm materials enhance its Mediterranean character.
Its cold resistance makes it the ideal companion for exposed or unprotected balconies — where other fig trees might struggle, Brown Turkey stays calm.
Verdeia advice
- No winter protection needed after the second year — once well rooted, Brown Turkey withstands winters down to -15 °C without cover or shelter. In the first year, mulching at the base is enough as a precaution.
- Prune in late winter, not autumn — fruit buds are already formed on last year’s wood by autumn. Autumn pruning would remove them and reduce the next harvest. Always wait until February-March.
- Water more during fruiting — from July to September, maintain regular watering. A substrate that dries out too much during fig growth causes premature fruit drop.
- Be patient for the first harvest — a young plant takes 2 to 3 years before producing significantly. The variety’s reliability fully shows once the shrub is well established.
- Drought tolerant once established — after 2 to 3 years, its deep root system allows it to endure dry periods. Before that, don’t neglect watering.
- 🐾 Non-toxic — the figs are edible and the plant is safe for pets.
