Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my blue hydrangea turn pink? The color of the hydrangea depends on the acidity of the soil. Alkaline soil turns the flowers pink. Use special hydrangea potting soil or add an acidifier. Tap water with lime gradually alkalizes the soil — rainwater is preferable.
How can I keep a hydrangea blooming as long as possible? Water generously and regularly — this is the top priority during blooming. Remove faded flower heads to encourage new buds. Avoid the harsh afternoon sun, which causes flowers to wilt prematurely.

💜 Large round heads in intense blue to violet-blue • 🌸 Generous summer bloom • ☀️ Partial shade to gentle sun • 💧 Regular watering • ❄️ Hardy • 🐾 Toxic to animals
The Hydrangea macrophylla 'Crystal Palace', or violet-blue Hydrangea, is a shrub with spectacular blooms native to East Asia — Japan and China. Its large flower heads of intense blue to deep violet-blue contrast beautifully with its firm, bright green, glossy foliage. A generous bloom and rare color make it an immediate focal point. H45 cm | Pot Ø23 cm at delivery.
Hardy, easy to care for. Note: toxic to animals. Discover it in our selection of plants for balconies and terraces.
Which Hydrangea variety to choose?
Our catalog offers several hydrangeas with distinct characters:
- Hydrangea 'Crystal Palace' (this plant) — large round heads in intense blue to violet-blue, firm bright green foliage. The deepest in color.
- Hydrangea 'Early Blue' — large intense blue heads, early blooming. The earliest.
- Hydrangea 'Strong Annabelle' — large white balls, compact and vigorous habit. The most understated.
- Hydrangea 'Pink Annabelle' — large soft pink balls. The most romantic.
- Hydrangea serrata 'Pink Petticoat' — delicate pink lace flowers, compact size. The most refined.
- Hydrangea petiolaris — white climbing hydrangea, ideal against a shaded wall. The only climber.
Exposure & location
- Ideal exposure: partial shade to gentle sun — morning light or light afternoon shade.
- Avoid: scorching afternoon sun that wilts flowers, strong wind.
- Soil : rich, fresh, and well-drained — slightly acidic to maintain blue and violet color.
- Hardiness : Hardy — withstands mild winters without protection.
- In a pot : balcony or terrace in partial shade, pot at least 30 cm in diameter.
The blue-violet color depends on substrate acidity — an acidic substrate (pH 5-6) intensifies blue and violet tones. Use special hydrangea potting soil or add an acidifier. Check our spring preparation guide for the right seasonal care.
Watering & maintenance
- Watering : regular and generous — especially during flowering and hot, dry periods.
- Frequency : every 2-3 days in summer, reduced in winter.
- Water : non-calcareous water — lime alkalizes the soil and turns flowers pink.
- Drainage : pot with drainage holes required.
- Fertilizer : special hydrangea or flowering plant fertilizer, once a month in spring-summer.
- Pruning : remove faded heads after flowering. Light structural pruning in March.
Hydrangea clearly signals water shortage — its leaves visibly wilt in strong heat. Water generously at the first signs. Check our complete watering guide to adjust frequency.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
Its deep blue-violet is a rare and precious color in gardens and terraces — an immediate focal point.
- In a solo pot : in a large terracotta or gray ceramic pot, its violet-blue heads create a spectacular focal point on a partial shade terrace or balcony.
- In combination : pair it with a Lavender Hidcote Blue for a very harmonious composition in blues and purples — same cool palette, very different textures.
- Style : romantic, rustic, Mediterranean — its large round heads match interiors with natural materials.
Keep dried flower heads in winter — hydrangea is one of the few plants whose dried flowers on the stem remain decorative for several months. Find more inspiration in our outdoor plants collection.
Verdeia tips
- Acidic substrate for intense blue-violet — use special hydrangea potting soil or add an acidifier. In alkaline substrate, flowers gradually turn pink.
- Water generously — hydrangea consumes a lot of water during flowering. In pots, check moisture every 2 days in hot weather.
- Do not prune too early — prune after flowering or in March. Autumn pruning would remove the flower buds for the following year. See our care calendar so you don’t miss this key step.
- ⚠️ Toxic to animals — hydrangea is toxic if ingested by cats and dogs. See our plants and pets guide for suitable alternatives.
