Frequently Asked Questions
How can I prevent the needles of my Chamaecyparis from turning brown? Browning is almost always caused by overwatering or air that is too dry and warm — ensure good drainage, water moderately, and keep it away from radiators.
Is the Chamaecyparis Ellwoodii frost-resistant? The foliage withstands temperatures down to -10 °C well, but potted roots are more vulnerable — protect the pot with a frost cloth if temperatures drop below -5 °C.

🌿 Persistent bluish-green foliage • 🌤️ Indirect light / Partial shade • 💧 Moderate watering • 🏙️ Indoor & sheltered outdoor • 📏 H35 cm | Pot Ø9 cm
The Chamaecyparis lawsoniana 'Ellwoodii', also known as Lawson Cypress, is a small conifer with a naturally dense conical shape and finely textured bluish-green foliage. Native to North America, it is distinguished by its slow growth, which allows it to maintain its compact silhouette for a long time without pruning. Discover our collection of hardy plants and our urban perennial mini-shrubs.
Versatile, it can live outdoors in a sheltered spot all year round or be brought indoors to a bright, cool room during winter. Our indoor plants in winter guide explains how to manage this transition.
Exposure & Location
The Chamaecyparis 'Ellwoodii' prefers soft light and cool environments — it is not suitable as a permanent indoor plant in a heated room but excels on a sheltered balcony or at an apartment entrance.
- Exposure: indirect light to partial shade — avoid full summer sun which burns the needles.
- Ideal for: sheltered balcony, terrace, greened entrance, or bright and cool room in winter.
- Temperature: prefers cool environments (10 to 18 °C) — dry heat from heated interiors weakens it quickly.
- Substrate: well-drained universal potting soil with some sand.
Watering & Care
- Watering: moderate — let the surface of the substrate dry between waterings. Excess water causes irreversible browning of the needles.
- Frequency: about once a week depending on temperature and ambient humidity.
- Humidity: lightly mist the foliage when the air is dry, especially indoors in winter.
- Pruning: unnecessary — its conical shape remains naturally dense and regular.
- Fertilizer: once a month in spring and summer, diluted conifer or green plant fertilizer.
Decor Ideas & Plant Combinations
Its compact conical silhouette and bluish-green foliage make it a structuring plant ideal for a balcony or terrace — it adds verticality without taking up space.
- At the entrance duo: pair it with the Golden Cypress Goldcrest Wilma — two conical conifers of similar size, two complementary colors (bluish-green and golden), immediate green framing effect.
- In winter arrangements: combine it with a Carex Irish Green with persistent foliage — two hardy plants, two contrasting textures, a coherent all-season composition. Our new plant welcome guide will help you set it up properly.
- Decorative pot: a terracotta or matte ceramic pot in neutral tones (beige, stone gray) enhances the natural and understated look of the conical silhouette.
Verdeia Tips
- Limit indoor stay: the Chamaecyparis can be brought indoors for a few weeks in winter for decoration, but a room that is too heated and dry weakens it — do not keep it indoors in heated rooms for more than 2 to 3 weeks without taking it back outside.
- Protect the pot from frost: the foliage tolerates cold well, but potted roots are more vulnerable — wrap the pot with a frost cloth if temperatures below -5 °C are expected.
- Rotate the pot regularly: monthly rotation ensures symmetrical growth and prevents the conical shape from deforming toward the light.
