🌿 Dark green foliage edged with cream and silver all year round • 🔄 Climbing or trailing • ☀️ Gentle sun to partial shade • ❄️ Hardy down to –5 °C • 📏 H65 cm | Pot Ø15 cm
Hedera algeriensis 'Gloire de Marengo', or variegated Algerian ivy, is an evergreen climber native to North Africa, selected for its striking large tricolored leaves — dark green in the center, fading to gray-green, edged with a cream and silver trim. Larger and brighter than common ivy, it climbs or trails with the same flexibility and instantly adds a graphic elegance to walls, trellises, and balconies. Among the ivies in the climbing collection, it is the most decorative variety for mild, sheltered exposures.
Evergreen, fast-growing, and undemanding, it is a top choice for long-lasting coverage of a sunny or partially shaded balcony or terrace in regions with mild winters.
Which ivy to choose?
Verdeia offers several ivies with distinct foliage. Here’s how to place 'Gloire de Marengo' among the varieties in the catalog:
- Hedera algeriensis 'Gloire de Marengo' (this plant) — large dark green leaves edged with cream and silver, generous and flexible habit, hardy down to –5 °C. The choice for a lush Mediterranean effect on a sheltered wall.
- Hedera helix — uniform dark green foliage, very vigorous, hardy to –20 °C. The go-to for quickly covering any exposure, including the coldest.
- Hedera helix 'Goldheart' — dark green leaves with a golden yellow heart, hardy to –20 °C. The choice to bring light to a dark wall with challenging exposure.
- Hedera colchica 'Dentata Variegata' — very large variegated green and cream leaves, very fast growth, hardy to –15 °C. The choice to quickly cover a large area with bold graphic foliage.
Exposure & location
'Gloire de Marengo' is less hardy than ivies of the helix species — it thrives in regions with mild winters (Mediterranean, temperate Atlantic) but suffers from prolonged frosts below –5 °C. In colder areas, plant it under a conservatory or in a pot that can be easily brought indoors. Its large leaves reveal their tricolored variegation under gentle sun or bright partial shade.
- Exposure: gentle sun to bright partial shade — avoid harsh midday sun which burns the cream areas.
- Use: climbing on trellis, pergola, or wall — or trailing from a hanging basket or elevated container.
- Soil: any well-drained type, tolerates poor soils.
- In pots: container at least 20 cm — bring indoors as soon as temperatures drop below –3 °C.
In intense full sun, the cream and silver areas bleach excessively and lose their delicacy — filtered light preserves the tricolor contrast and the foliage’s shine throughout the season.
Watering & care
Once established, 'Gloire de Marengo' is very self-sufficient. In pots, let the substrate dry slightly on the surface between waterings — the finger test remains the most reliable guide. Overly wet soil in winter is the main cause of decline. If leaves yellow outside of winter, the usual causes are overwatering or lack of light which dulls the variegation.
- Watering: moderate — allow slight drying between waterings, very infrequent in winter.
- Pruning: in spring to control growth and thicken foliage — immediately remove fully green reversion shoots.
- Fertilizer: light organic feeding in spring for potted plants — unnecessary in the ground.
- Reversion: remove fully green shoots at their base as soon as they appear.
Regularly pinch the tips to encourage branching — a pinched stem produces two to three new variegated shoots and quickly thickens the foliage.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The tricolor green-gray-cream palette of 'Gloire de Marengo' creates a bright and sophisticated backdrop that pairs well with colorful blooms as well as contrasting foliage in a Mediterranean garden or a jungle terrace.
- For a sheltered, flowering, and fragrant wall, pair it with Lonicera 'Serotina' on the same support — the ivy provides evergreen leafy background in winter while the honeysuckle covers it with fragrant pink flowers from June to September.
- To enhance the cream brightness of the foliage, pair it with Hydrangea 'Strong Annabelle'® at the base — the white spherical flower clusters echo the cream areas of the ivy and create a very elegant white-green composition in shaded exposure.
- For a trailing container on a Mediterranean balcony, let the stems cascade from a large terracotta or ochre ceramic pot — the warm tones of unglazed ceramic complement the silver reflections of the foliage and evoke the atmosphere of Mediterranean gardens.
- For maximum graphic contrast, pair it with Hedera helix uniform green on the same trellis — the juxtaposition of tricolored variegated foliage and solid dark green creates a lively texture and light effect.
In autumn and winter, when neighboring blooms have disappeared, the evergreen tricolored foliage of 'Gloire de Marengo' takes center stage — this is when its decorative value is most precious.
Verdeia Tips
- Protect it from prolonged frosts below –3 °C: unlike Hedera helix which tolerates –20 °C, 'Gloire de Marengo' is sensitive to harsh winters — in cold regions, grow it in a pot that can be easily brought indoors under a conservatory or in a bright frost-free room at the first frosts.
- Immediately remove reversion shoots: fully green shoots are more vigorous than variegated ones and would take over in a few seasons — prune them at the base as soon as you spot them to maintain the tricolor variegation.
- Pinch tips twice a year to thicken: a pinched stem produces several new branched shoots — this light, regular pruning results in a bushier, brighter, and more decorative plant than one left to grow freely.
