Frequently Asked Questions
What exposure is best for a blue lacecap hydrangea in a pot? An east or northeast-facing balcony is ideal — the blue color is more intense and stable in the shade than in full sun, and the large sterile flowers don’t burn without the afternoon's excess heat.
When to prune a Teller hydrangea to avoid removing the flowers? Prune only in spring, removing old dry flower heads above the first strong bud — the hydrangea blooms on last year's wood, and pruning too severely or too late removes already formed buds.

💙 7 to 12 large flat blue umbels per plant • 🌿 Flowering from June to September • 🌤️ Partial shade or soft light • ❄️ Very hardy • 📏 H45 cm | Pot Ø23 cm
The Hydrangea Teller 'Nizza Blue' is a lacecap hydrangea native to Switzerland, from the same Teller series obtained in Wädenswil by Dr. F. Meier. Its flat umbels feature a dense core of small blue-green fertile flowers surrounded by a crown of large blue-white sterile flowers — a very natural graphic and very different from classic ball hydrangeas. Delivered with 7 to 12 flower heads per plant, it brings a sophisticated and natural floral touch to any terrace, balcony, or garden with partial shade.
Its blue color is directly related to the acidity of the substrate — in acidic soil, the flowers turn intense blue; in calcareous soil, they tend towards mauve pink. It is one of the most appreciated summer-flowering shrubs for partial shade spaces.
Which hydrangea to choose?
Verdeia offers several hydrangeas with distinct shapes and colors. Here is how to place the Teller 'Nizza Blue' among the varieties in the catalog:
- Hydrangea Teller 'Nizza Blue' (this plant) — large flat blue umbels (lacecap), 7 to 12 heads per plant, flowering June-September. The most natural and attractive variety for pollinators, in blue.
- Hydrangea Teller 'Benxi' — same flat umbels in pure white. The choice for a very elegant white match in the same lacecap format.
- Hydrangea Early Blue — large intense blue balls, early flowering. The choice for a dense and voluminous blue ball.
- Hydrangea Early Rosa — large, very dense pink balls, early flowering. The classic choice for an intense color ball effect.
- Hydrangea Crystal Palace — deep violet-blue balls, compact habit. The choice for very dense purplish tones.
- Hydrangea arborescens 'Strong Annabelle' — very large white balls with sturdy stems. The choice for a pure and voluminous white that is very structuring.
Exposure & location
The Teller 'Nizza Blue' enjoys soft light in partial shade. A location sheltered from the burning afternoon sun is ideal — in full sun, large sterile flowers and leaves quickly fade and burn. Its blue color is also more intense and stable in shade than in full sun.
- Exposure: Partial shade or soft light — ideally east or northeast facing, sheltered from the afternoon sun.
- Location: north or east-facing balcony, shaded terrace, garden under partial cover.
- Soil: rich, humus-rich, fresh, and acidic — ideal pH between 5 and 6 for an intense and stable blue.
- In pot: acidifying substrate for hydrangeas — water strictly with rainwater or demineralized water.
To intensify and stabilize the blue color, add aluminum sulfates (blueing fertilizer) to the substrate at planting — this is the most direct way to get a deep and consistent blue throughout the season, regardless of your watering water composition.
Watering & maintenance
Like all hydrangeas, the 'Nizza Blue' is a heavy water consumer — in a pot, insufficient watering is the main cause of flower wilting. Tap water with lime is its main enemy in pots: it neutralizes the substrate's acidity and turns blue flowers to mauve pink. A good spring restart and a specific acidifying fertilizer for hydrangeas in March-April ensure dense flowering and stable blue color.
- Watering: abundant and regular — the soil must never dry out completely; water exclusively with rainwater or demineralized water.
- Size: in spring only — remove old dry flower heads above the first strong bud; never prune green wood.
- Fertilizer: specific acidifying hydrangea fertilizer in March and June — a blueing fertilizer strengthens and stabilizes the blue color.
- Repotting: every 2 years in spring with acidifying substrate for hydrangeas.
- Winter care: very hardy in open ground; in pot, protect the planter from frost or bring indoors to a frost-free space.
If the blue flowers turn pink, your water or substrate is too calcareous — adding a blueing fertilizer for hydrangeas quickly corrects the situation and brings new flowers back to blue within a few weeks.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The blue lacecap of 'Nizza Blue' is one of the rarest and most elegant colors in the world of flowering shrubs. It naturally pairs with whites, pinks, and dark foliage for a characterful green terrace.
- For a very refined blue and white duo, the Hydrangea Teller 'Benxi' white is the ideal companion in the same size — the two lacecaps from the Teller series in blue and white create a very harmonious and natural two-tone composition in a partial shade terrace corner.
- For a very bright spring blue and pink combination, the Rhododendron 'Bollywood' variegated pink blooms in April-May before the hydrangea takes over in June — the two partial shade shrubs succeed each other for a flowering terrace from winter to early autumn.
- For a very elegant lasting background all year round, the Camellia 'Nuccio's Gem' white blooms from February-March when the hydrangea is still past its peak — the white camellia covers the winter, the blue hydrangea takes over in summer, both shrubs sharing the same preference for acidic soil.
- To enhance the blue in a contemporary planter, the pot Capi Nature Groove taupe provides a natural, matte background that amplifies the depth of the blue lacecap flowers — the ribbed texture of the recycled material pot creates a very elegant harmony with the natural character of this lacecap hydrangea.
The Teller 'Nizza Blue' is the hydrangea that attracts the most pollinators — its central fertile flowers are accessible to bees and bumblebees, unlike mophead hydrangeas whose flowers are all sterile; place it in a visible spot to enjoy this lively ballet all summer.
Verdeia tips
- Water only with rainwater or demineralized water: calcareous tap water is the main enemy of blue in pots — it gradually neutralizes the substrate acidity and turns the flowers mauve pink in a few seasons; collect rainwater or use demineralized water for all watering.
- Add a bluing fertilizer at planting: the intense blue of the flowers directly depends on the availability of aluminum in the soil, which is conditioned by acidity — applying bluing fertilizer (aluminum sulfates) in spring and June ensures a stable and intense blue color regardless of your water composition.
- Keep flower heads dry in winter: old dried inflorescences naturally protect flower buds from frost — do not remove them in autumn; leave them in place until spring, they are also very decorative under frost and can be cut for dried floral arrangements.
