🌿 Elegant elongated foliage • 🎨 Spectacular orange petioles • ☀️ Bright indirect light • 💧 Moderate watering • 🌱 Collector plant • 📏 H25 cm | Pot Ø12 cm
The Philodendron Billietiae is a rare and sought-after plant, known for its long narrow leaves and striking bright orange petioles that bring a unique touch of color to any interior. One of the most graphic pieces in our collector plant selection.
Native to the tropical forests of Brazil and French Guiana, Philodendron billietiae naturally grows climbing on trees in humid understories. When young, its leaves are short and its petioles already colorful — as it grows on a stake, the leaves lengthen considerably and the orange stems become even more spectacular. At 25 cm tall, it’s the ideal size to start with this rare species before it takes off.
Which Philodendron variety to choose?
The Philodendron genus offers an immense diversity of shapes, colors, and textures — here’s how the Philodendron Billietiae stands out from other varieties in the catalog:
- Philodendron Billietiae (this plant) — elongated leaves with spectacular orange petioles, rare collector’s plant (H25 cm | Pot Ø12 cm). The most graphic and colorful version.
- Philodendron Prince of Orange — whole leaves with an orange tint evolving to green, compact habit. The most accessible orange version.
- Philodendron Birkin — dark green leaves striped with white, compact and graphic habit. The elegant variegated version.
- Philodendron Green Princess — shiny tender green foliage, compact habit (H25 cm | Pot Ø12 cm). The classic green version to start with.
- Philodendron Melanochrysum — dark green velvety leaves with light veins, climbing habit (H75 cm | Pot Ø21 cm). The XXL velvety version.
- Philodendron Diamond Variegata — green and cream variegated foliage, elegant marbling. The rarest variegated version.
- Philodendron White Princess — white and green variegated leaves, climbing habit. The white variegated version.
Exposure & placement
The Philodendron Billietiae needs good indirect light to maintain the intensity of its orange petioles — it’s one of the few plants where brightness directly affects stem color.
- Exposure: bright indirect light to partial shade — avoid direct sun that burns the leaves.
- Ideal: office, shelf, living room, or bedroom with a well-exposed window without direct sun.
- Temperature: 18 to 27 °C, without sudden changes or drafts.
- Substrate: light, rich, and well-draining — universal potting soil mixed with perlite.
The brighter the light (without direct sun), the more vibrant the orange petioles — in shade, the colors gradually fade.
Watering & care
Like all Philodendrons, the Billietiae prefers a slightly dry substrate rather than soggy — yellowing leaves almost always indicate overwatering, rarely underwatering. Good indoor plant watering practices fully apply here.
- Watering: moderate — let the top 3 to 5 cm of substrate dry out between waterings.
- Frequency: about once a week in spring-summer, every 2 weeks in winter.
- Drainage: essential — use a perforated pot with well-draining substrate.
- Humidity: prefers 60–70% humidity — mist occasionally or place near other plants.
- Fertilizer: once a month in spring-summer with diluted liquid fertilizer for green plants.
- Cleaning: gently wipe the leaves with a damp cloth to preserve their shine.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
With its orange petioles and elongated leaves, the Philodendron Billietiae adds a rare splash of color to tropical arrangements — it contrasts with uniform greens without ever dominating.
- Create a collection plant display by pairing the Billietiae with a Begonia Maculata with silver-spotted leaves and an Anthurium Crystallinum with pearly veins — three collection plants with very distinctive graphic foliage in the same compact size.
- Place it on a bright shelf in the white relief ceramic decorative pot Ø13.5 cm — the matte white highlights the orange petioles with maximum contrast without competing with the plant.
- Pair it with a Philodendron Green Princess with soft green leaves and a Philodendron Prince of Orange — three compact Philodendrons, three very different palettes (bright orange / soft orange / soft green) for a fully themed composition.
- For a graphic desk, place it in the Borneo gray basket Ø14 cm — the neutral gray of the natural fiber lets the orange petioles stand out without color competition.
Verdeia tips
- Install a stake as soon as possible: the Billietiae is naturally climbing — with support, its leaves lengthen spectacularly and its orange petioles fully develop, revealing the plant’s full decorative potential.
- Maintain good brightness: the intensity of the orange petioles is directly related to the amount of indirect light received — if leaves dull and stems turn green, move the plant closer to a window.
- Repot every 2 years in spring: into a slightly larger pot with fresh, well-draining substrate — properly done, repotting restarts growth and encourages the formation of new large leaves with even more colorful petioles.
