Frequently Asked Questions
When does Wisteria floribunda 'Naga Noda' bloom? In May-June, at the same time as the leaves — unlike Wisteria sinensis which blooms on bare wood before the leaves, giving 'Naga Noda' a very different dense and lush appearance at flowering time.
How to get very long clusters on a Wisteria 'Naga Noda'? Follow the double pruning schedule — in July-August at 5–6 leaves then in January-February at 2–3 buds — and train the stems horizontally from the first year: these are the two conditions that maximize the length and abundance of the clusters.

💜 Very long double fragrant purple clusters • 🌿 Vigorous climber • ☀️ Full sun to partial shade • ❄️ Hardy down to −15 °C • 📏 H65 cm | Pot Ø15 cm
The Wisteria floribunda 'Naga Noda' is the most sumptuous wisteria in the catalog — native to Japan, it stands out with its exceptionally long clusters of dark blue-purple flowers, sometimes double, cascading spectacularly in spring. Among the hardy climbers, it is the most lush and impressive version.
Hardy down to −15 °C and very fragrant, it embodies the meeting of Japanese floral tradition and the elegance of Mediterranean gardens.
Which Wisteria variety to choose?
Wisteria floribunda 'Naga Noda' is the most spectacular due to the length of its clusters. Here is how it differs from other varieties in the catalog:
- Wisteria floribunda 'Naga Noda' (this plant) — very long dark blue-purple clusters, sometimes double, flowering at the same time as the leaves. The longest and most sumptuous version.
- Wisteria floribunda 'Alba' — long white clusters delicately scented. The pure and elegant white version.
- Wisteria floribunda 'Rosea' — pale pink very fragrant clusters. The romantic pink version.
- Wisteria sinensis 'Prolific' — abundant blue-purple clusters, early flowering on bare wood and remontant. The most floriferous blue version.
- Wisteria sinensis 'Caroline' — very fragrant purple clusters, early flowering before the leaves. The classic most fragrant purple version.
Exposure & location
'Naga Noda' wisteria prefers warm and bright exposures — full sun is essential for abundant flowering and long clusters. Unlike Wisteria sinensis, it flowers at the same time as the leaves, creating a very dense and bushy effect in spring. Plan for a very sturdy support from planting.
- Exposure: full sun to partial shade — full sun for longer and more abundant clusters.
- Support: pergola, arch, wall, trellis — firmly anchored before planting.
- Soil: rich, well-drained and cool, slightly acidic to neutral.
- In a pot: deep container at least 40 cm, heavy to stabilize vigorous growth.
Place it near a passage or window — its exceptionally long clusters and sweet fragrance are especially striking up close, at eye level on a pergola.
Watering & care
Pruning is the essential care — twice a year, precisely, to stimulate flowering and control vigor. Semi-woody cuttings in summer root easily. If leaves yellow out of season, check watering and nutrient supply.
- Watering: regular in pots for the first two years, moderate afterwards.
- Summer pruning: July-August — shorten new shoots to 5–6 leaves.
- Winter pruning: January-February — shorten the same branches to 2–3 buds.
- Fertilizer: rich in potassium in spring — never nitrogen, which favors foliage over flowers.
Wisteria floribunda flowers slightly later than sinensis — be patient in spring, clusters appear at the same time as the leaves, not before.
Decoration ideas & plant combinations
The very long dark blue-purple clusters of 'Naga Noda' create a unique floral cascade effect. Its dense bushiness — foliage and flowers together — gives it a lush appearance very different from the more refined sinensis wisterias.
- For a two-tone violet and white wisteria duo, the white Wisteria floribunda 'Alba' complements 'Naga Noda' on the same support — same species, simultaneous flowering, two contrasting colors for a very spectacular two-tone cascade effect.
- To frame the wisteria with a summer fragrance, the evergreen white Honeysuckle 'Halliana' takes over after the wisteria blooms — its intense scent from June to September extends the olfactory season into autumn.
- To dress the base of the wall permanently, the evergreen white Trachelospermum 'Star of Venice' complements the deciduous wisteria in winter — its always green foliage maintains the support’s coverage all year round.
- For an intense violet trellis, the violet Clematis 'The President' extends the wisteria’s floral palette until September — two slightly different violets that follow each other from spring to autumn on the same support.
Verdeia Tips
- Install a massive support before planting: 'Naga Noda' develops considerable strength and weight at maturity — a pergola or arch must be firmly anchored in the ground well before planting to withstand years of vigorous growth.
- Guide the stems horizontally from the first year: stems oriented fanwise or horizontally produce much more abundant clusters than vertical stems — this early orientation is the most effective technique to maximize flowering in following years.
- Strictly follow the double pruning schedule: prune in July-August to 5–6 leaves then in January-February to 2–3 buds — without this precise rhythm, even perfect exposure is not enough to trigger abundant flowering.
