Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Virginia creeper lose its leaves in winter? It is a deciduous plant — it goes into complete dormancy in winter after the autumn display. Leaf loss is normal and expected. The stems remain alive, and the plant will vigorously regrow new leaves in spring. Don’t mistake it for a dead plant.
Does Virginia creeper grow quickly? Yes, it is one of the most vigorous climbers — it can grow 1 to 2 meters per year under good conditions. Plan an annual pruning at the end of winter to control growth and prevent it from spreading onto gutters, shutters, or woodwork. This vigor is also its main advantage for quickly covering a large area.

🌿 Spectacular three-lobed foliage • 🍂 Red-orange autumn colors • ☀️ Sun to partial shade • 💧 Moderate watering • 📏 H65 cm | Pot Ø15 cm • ❄️ Very hardy to -20°C • 🧗 Clings on its own • 🐾 Non-toxic
The Parthenocissus tricuspidata, or Virginia creeper, is a vigorous climber native to East Asia. Its bright green three-lobed leaves turn into a fiery display of reds and oranges in autumn. It clings on its own to surfaces thanks to its adhesive suction cups — wall, pergola, trellis, facade — without stakes or fasteners.
Very hardy, pollution-tolerant, and remarkably vigorous — it can cover several square meters in a few seasons. Discover it in our climbing plants collection. Non-toxic to animals.
Which variety of Virginia creeper to choose?
The four Parthenocissus in our catalog are distinguished by their foliage and habit. Here are their profiles:
- Parthenocissus tricuspidata (this plant) — three-lobed leaves, fiery red-orange autumn colors, adhesive suction cups, H65 cm | Pot Ø15 cm. The most vigorous and spectacular in autumn.
- Parthenocissus henryana — palmate leaves with 5 leaflets and silver veins, autumn colors in purple-red. The most refined and decorative all year round.
- Parthenocissus quinquefolia 'Engelmannii' — compound leaves with 5 serrated leaflets, intense scarlet red in autumn. The most graphic.
- Parthenocissus Striata — small leaflets, compact trailing habit, ideal for hanging baskets. The only trailing version.
The tricuspidata is the most vigorous variety — if you want to quickly cover a large area, this is the one. For more decorative foliage all year round and more manageable growth, Henryana is preferable.
Exposure & location
The Parthenocissus tricuspidata adapts to a wide range of exposures — but the autumn colors are directly linked to the sunlight received.
- Ideal exposure: sun to partial shade — wall or support facing south, east, or west.
- Tolerates: partial shade and urban pollution — a valuable asset for city facades.
- Support: clings on its own thanks to adhesive suction cups on walls, concrete, brick, trellis, or pergola. No stakes or fastenings needed.
- Hardiness: Very hardy down to -20 °C — can stay outdoors year-round.
- Soil: rich and well-drained — universal potting soil with compost. Minimum pot size 30–40 cm.
The sunnier the exposure, the more intense the autumn colors will be. In deep shade, the foliage stays green and the autumn transformation is less dramatic.
Watering & maintenance
- Watering: moderate — keep the soil moist but not waterlogged, especially during growth.
- Frequency: 1 to 2 times per week in spring and summer, greatly reduced in winter (the plant is dormant).
- Drainage: pot must have drainage holes.
- Fertilizer: liquid fertilizer for green plants, once a month in spring and summer.
- Pruning: late winter to control vigor and maintain the desired shape. The plant is deciduous — it loses its leaves in winter after the autumn show.
Virginia creeper can become very dense quickly — plan for annual pruning to prevent it from overflowing onto gutters, shutters, or window frames. Check out our new plant care guide to get off to a good start.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The Parthenocissus tricuspidata is a large-scale plant — think of it in terms of walls and facades rather than pots and shelves.
- As a green wall: pressed against a facade wall, a concrete panel, or a fence, it creates a dense green screen in summer and a blazing red-orange display in autumn.
- On a pergola or trellis: its suction cups cling to any type of surface — wood, metal, PVC.
- In combination: pair it with a Hedera helix Ivy for a green wall that stays lush all year — the ivy takes over visually when the Virginia creeper loses its leaves in winter.
Its suction cups leave marks on painted or coated surfaces when the plant is removed — plan to use it permanently or on raw surfaces like brick or concrete.
Verdeia tips
- Anticipate its vigor — tricuspidata can reach 10 to 15 m in height in the ground and cover several square meters in a pot. Plan annual pruning from the first year to keep growth under control before it becomes too established.
- Suction cups leave marks — once attached, they stick firmly and leave marks on painted surfaces. Use on permanent supports — brick, raw concrete, wooden trellis.
- Leaf drop in winter is normal — this is a deciduous plant. It loses all its leaves after the autumn display and regrows vigorously in spring. Do not mistake it for a dead plant.
- Very pollution tolerant — one of the few climbers to thrive in dense urban environments, even on facades exposed to exhaust gases.
- 🐾 Non-toxic — Parthenocissus is safe for dogs and cats.
