Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Monstera Minima different from the Monstera deliciosa? Yes — Rhaphidophora tetrasperma is a distinct species that looks similar but remains much more compact, with smaller, more finely cut leaves, ideal for spaces where Monstera deliciosa would be too large.
Can kokodama be placed or must it be hung? Both are possible — when hung, it fully reveals its trailing stems; placed on a shelf or furniture, it creates a more compact and structured effect, optionally guided on a small stake to climb.

🌿 Graphic, glossy perforated foliage • 🪴 Kokodama made from natural coconut fiber • 💧 Watering by immersion • ☀️ Indirect light • 🏙️ H25 cm | Pot Ø15 cm
The Monstera Minima (Rhaphidophora tetrasperma) is a tropical climbing plant native to Southeast Asia, valued for its finely divided, perforated leaves that evoke the large leaves of Monstera deliciosa in a compact form. Presented in a kokodama made from natural coconut fiber - a ball of substrate wrapped in biodegradable coconut fiber - it creates a graphic, ecological tropical hanging display that is instantly decorative.
Climbing or trailing depending on its support, it fits into the decorative trailing plants and the indoor jungle collection in the Verdeia catalogue.
Which Kokodama should you choose?
The Kokodama format is available for several species in the Verdeia catalogue - each one brings a distinct silhouette and atmosphere:
- Kokodama Monstera Minima (this plant) - glossy green, graphic perforated foliage, with a climbing or trailing habit. The most graphic and tropical.
- Kokodama Jungle Mix - a mix of varied tropical plants in a single support. The most diverse and lush.
- Kokodama Maranta Mix - Marantas with graphic, colorful foliage. The most colorful and lively thanks to their nyctinastic movement.
- Kokodama Pilea peperomioides - round, graphic leaves on upright stems. The most minimalist and designer-inspired.
- Kokodama Tillandsia Mix - air plants without substrate, watered by misting only. The lightest and most original.
Light & location
Monstera Minima thrives in indirect light - this is essential for its perforated leaves to develop well and retain their deep, glossy green color. It is one of the best hanging plants for indoors, provided it receives bright, indirect light.
- Light: indirect light to partial shade — protected from direct sun, which burns the delicate leaves.
- Locations: living room, bedroom, office, kitchen, conservatory — anywhere a hanging plant can be secured in a stable, bright spot.
- To avoid: cold drafts and temperatures below 15 °C.
- Temperature: 18 to 26 °C.
Hang it at eye level near an east-facing window — the perforated leaves filter the morning light and create a highly decorative play of shadows on the surrounding walls.
Watering & care
The kokodama has specific watering requirements — coconut fiber dries more quickly than a traditional substrate in a pot, and immersion watering is the most effective method for hydrating it evenly. The general principles of watering tropical plants remain applicable as a complement.
- Regular watering: approximately once a week, water when the substrate is dry on the surface.
- Summer watering: immerse the kokodama in water at room temperature for 10 minutes every 2 weeks to hydrate it evenly.
- Humidity: mist the foliage 1 to 2 times a week to maintain good humidity levels.
- Fertilizer: apply diluted liquid fertilizer every 2 to 3 weeks in spring and summer.
- Cleaning: wipe the leaves with a soft cloth to preserve their shine.
If the coconut fiber dries too quickly, temporarily place the kokodama on a tray of damp clay pebbles — evaporation maintains constant ambient humidity around the substrate.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
The hanging kokodama format allows you to create airy, multi-level plant arrangements — each plant becomes a graphic botanical mobile, halfway between hanging plants and XXL plants.
- For a three-tiered plant curtain, hang the Kokodama Monstera Minima at the highest level, a Scindapsus pictus 'Trebie' at the middle level, and a Philodendron scandens at the lowest level — the three distinct types of foliage create a highly graphic tropical plant cascade.
- For a varied Kokodama arrangement, pair this Monstera Minima with Kokodama Maranta Mix and Kokodama Pilea — suspended at different heights, they create a lively, animated botanical plant mobile.
- To enrich the floor arrangement, combine the hanging plant with a potted Monstera adansonii on the floor — the two species with perforated foliage create a cohesive visual dialogue between floor and ceiling.
- In a kitchen or conservatory, the hanging Kokodama Monstera Minima adds a touch of graphic greenery without taking up counter space — choose a natural cord or macramé to enhance the organic look of the coconut fiber kokodama.
Verdeia tips
- Rotate the plant regularly to balance its growth: Monstera Minima naturally directs its stems toward the light — rotating it a quarter turn every two weeks ensures a balanced shape and perforated leaves on all sides.
- Pinch the stem tips to encourage branching: left unpruned, Rhaphidophora tetrasperma produces long, sparsely branched stems — pinching the tips encourages new shoots and a fuller, more abundant shape.
- Hang the plant in a stable place sheltered from drafts: repeated movement caused by drafts weakens the stems and accelerates the drying of the coconut fiber — a calm, stable location ensures steady growth and less frequent watering.
