Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Tradescantia zebrina 'Purpusii' and Tradescantia 'Brightness'? 'Purpusii' has silver-purple striped leaves on top and deep violet underneath, while 'Brightness' is tricolor green, pink, and white — two very different palettes for the same trailing habit and ease of care.
Why are the stems of my Tradescantia thinning at the base? This is a natural phenomenon in Tradescantias — the stems lengthen and lose their leaves at the base over time; cut them and root the cuttings in a glass of water to rejuvenate the plant, then replant the rooted cuttings in the same pot.

🌿 Silver-purple and violet striped leaves • ☀️ Bright indirect light • 💧 Moderate watering • 🚀 Fast growth
Native to the tropical forests of Mexico and Central America, Tradescantia zebrina 'Purpusii' naturally grows as ground cover in moist understories. Its oval leaves are particularly striking: silver and purple stripes on top, uniform deep violet underneath. Its fast-growing trailing stems can cascade several dozen centimeters, among the most colorful in our trailing plants collection and our easy-care plants.
Which Tradescantia variety to choose?
Our catalog offers four Tradescantia varieties with very different color palettes:
- Tradescantia zebrina 'Purpusii' (this plant) — silver-purple striped leaves on top, deep violet underneath, trailing stems (H30 cm | Pot Ø17 cm). The most colorful and spectacular version.
- Tradescantia 'Yellow Hill' — bright yellow-green tinted leaves, generous trailing habit (H40 cm | Pot Ø17 cm). The brightest and largest version.
- Tradescantia 'Brightness' — tricolor leaves in green, pink, and white, compact size (H20 cm | Pot Ø12 cm). The most pastel and delicate version.
- Tradescantia 'Sweetness' — very compact small size, leaves with soft tones. The most miniature version.
Light & location
- Light: bright indirect to bright partial shade — the brighter the light, the more intense the silver and purple tones. In shade, the foliage gradually becomes a less contrasting green.
- Ideal: hanging near a window, high shelf, furniture edge, or bright bookshelf.
- Temperature: 15 to 25 °C, without sudden changes.
- Substrate: light and well-drained — green plant potting soil mixed with perlite.
Watering & care
- Watering: moderate — keep the substrate slightly moist without ever soaking it. Its fast growth consumes a lot of water in spring-summer — reduce significantly in winter.
- Drainage: essential — pot with drainage holes to prevent root rot.
- Humidity: prefers 50–60% humidity, tolerates dry air.
- Fertilizer: every 3 to 4 weeks in spring-summer, diluted liquid fertilizer.
- Pruning: regularly pinch the tips to encourage branching and maintain a dense habit — cuttings root in water within a few days.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
- Spectacular contrast: pair it with a Golden Pothos in bright green and yellow and a Senecio herreianus with light green beads — the intense purple of the Tradescantia creates a striking color contrast with these two light foliages for a very graphic trailing composition.
- When hanging: its stems cascade freely from a height of 60 to 80 cm — the deep violet underside of the leaves, invisible when the plant is placed, becomes the visual foreground when hanging.
- Ideal pot: matte white ceramic to maximize contrast with the purple and deep violet foliage — neutral tones let the plant’s colors stand out.
Verdeia tips
- Pinch stems every 3 to 4 weeks: Tradescantia tends to stretch quickly at the expense of density — pinching the tips triggers branching and keeps a bushy habit rather than thin, sparsely leafed stems.
- Propagate easily to rejuvenate the plant: when stems become bare at the base, cut them to 8–10 cm, place them in a glass of water and repot rooted cuttings in the original pot — roots appear in 1 to 2 weeks.
- Keep bright light to preserve colors: this is the main condition for the silver-purple to remain intense and contrasting — place it in the brightest possible spot without direct sun.
