💙 Large blue-violet to mauve flower heads • 🌿 Bright green scalloped foliage • 🌤️ Partial shade to light shade • 🌡️ Very hardy • 💧 Regular watering • 📏 H35 cm | Pot Ø14 cm
The Hydrangea bleu, or Hortensia bleu, is a classic for balconies and terraces, known for its huge floral balls in blue-violet to mauve shades, dotted with green touches at the center. Native to Japan, the species Hydrangea macrophylla has been cultivated for centuries for the spectacular generosity of its summer bloom, the centerpiece of the Hydrangeas in the catalog.
Its particularity: the flower color directly depends on soil acidity — an acidic substrate blues the flower heads, a neutral substrate turns them pink-violet. Compact size in a Ø14 cm pot, ideal for gifting, to which one can attribute a true symbolic meaning in the language of flowers.
Which Hortensia to choose?
The Hydrangea collection from the Verdeia catalog offers a wide variety of shapes, colors, and sizes. Here is how to place this blue Hortensia among the available varieties:
- Hydrangea bleu (this plant) — blue-violet to mauve balls, compact size (35 cm). The classic for gifting or for an intimate pot.
- Hydrangea 'Early Blue' — intense blue balls, early flowering, medium size (45 cm). For a more saturated blue and an early season bloom.
- Hydrangea 'Crystal Palace' — deep violet-blue balls, medium size (45 cm). For a more purple and theatrical palette.
- Hydrangea Teller 'Nizza Blue' — bright blue lacecap (flat crown) flowers, medium size (45 cm). For a lighter and more natural style.
- Hydrangea 'Curly Wurly Blue' — double wavy blue petals, medium size (50 cm). For an original and romantic floral effect.
- Hydrangea 'Early Rosa' — bright pink balls, medium size (45 cm). The intense pink version for neutral to alkaline soil.
- Hydrangea macrophylla blanc — large pure white balls, medium size (40 cm). For a pure and bright scene.
- Hydrangea arborescens 'Pink Annabelle' — tree species, large powder pink balls, more rustic habit.
- Hydrangea arborescens 'Strong Annabelle' — tree species, huge white balls, sturdy stems. The reference for white flower beds.
- Hydrangea serrata 'Pink Petticoat' — Japanese lace hydrangea, compact pink form. For a more delicate and Japanese-inspired approach.
- Hydrangea petiolaris — climbing hydrangea, white flat flowers. The only Hydrangea that clings to a wall or trellis.
Exposure & location
The blue Hydrangea appreciates soft and constant light. It hates scorching full sun exposures that wilt its flower heads but needs brightness to bloom abundantly.
- Exposure: partial shade to light shade — ideally morning sun, sheltered from the burning rays of the afternoon.
- Location: east or north balcony, sheltered terrace, under a light tree, against a shaded wall — anywhere where light is filtered but present.
- Temperature: very hardy, withstands cold winters — rather protect from drying drafts and harsh sun in summer.
- Soil type: rich in humus, fresh and well-drained — to keep the flower blue, choose an acidic to very acidic substrate (ericaceous soil).
The color of Hydrangea macrophylla depends on the soil pH: acidic substrate (pH below 5.5) = blue, neutral to alkaline substrate = pink-purple. To maintain the blue in a pot, use ericaceous soil and a specific alum supplement for hydrangeas.
Watering & maintenance
The Hydrangea is one of the most water-demanding plants in the garden — its Latin name Hydrangea literally means "plant that drinks a lot." Lack of water immediately shows as a spectacular but reversible wilting; the finger test in the substrate remains the most reliable method to anticipate watering.
- Summer watering: very regular, 3 to 5 times a week in pot during heat waves — the substrate must always remain cool deep down.
- Winter watering: reduced, avoiding complete drying of the root ball.
- Ideal water: non-limey (preferably rainwater) — limey tap water turns flowers pink and dulls the blue.
- Drainage: essential despite thirst — empty the saucer after watering, stagnant the water suffocates the roots.
- Fertilization: special blue hydrangea fertilizer (rich in aluminum sulfate) in spring and mid-summer to maintain the color.
- Pruning: after flowering, remove faded flowers just above the first pair of healthy buds — main pruning at the end of winter to maintain a compact shape.
If your Blue Hydrangea gradually turns pink over the seasons, it is probably the lime in the watering water that changes the substrate's pH — switch to rainwater or add an acidity corrector to restore the blue.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
With its large blue-violet balls and bright green scalloped foliage, the Blue Hydrangea brings romantic elegance to any outdoor or bright indoor arrangement, perfect for welcoming a new plant in an apartment.
- For a harmonious blue-violet floral duo, pair it with an Agapanthus 'Poppin Purple' — the airy umbels of the purple agapanthus complement the dense large balls of the hydrangea, two summer blooms in the same cool range.
- For a cool, tropical shade scene, place it next to a Calathea Orbifolia with large, round silver leaves — the hydrangea provides the flower, the calathea the graphic foliage, two plants that share a taste for bright shade and humidity.
- To highlight the blue-violet of the umbels, place it in an Elho Greenville Round Blanc pot Ø18 cm — the light base brings out the depth of the blue without any color competition.
- For a tonal and romantic note, choose an Elho Jazz Round Lavande Lilas decorative pot Ø15 cm — the lilac tone extends the purple palette of the flowers and creates a delicate monochrome scene on a table or windowsill.
Hydrangea can be grown indoors for a few months on a bright windowsill, but its natural place is outdoors — once flowering is over, it’s best to move it to a sheltered balcony so it can bloom again the following year.
Verdeia tips
- Water with rainwater: the lime in tap water gradually turns blue hydrangeas pink — collect rainwater in a barrel or use filtered water to keep the intense blue shade throughout the seasons.
- Anticipate thirst spells: Hydrangea wilts dramatically in strong heat but recovers within hours once watered — during heatwaves, water early in the morning before the first rays to prevent wilting rather than trying to fix it later.
- Prune after flowering, not before: on Hydrangea macrophylla, next year’s flowers form on the current year’s wood — pruning too severely at the end of winter removes flower buds, so just remove faded flowers and dead branches.
