Frequently Asked Questions
When does an Early Rosa hydrangea bloom? The Early series is one of the first to bloom — usually from late spring, before other hydrangea varieties. Its flowering continues into summer depending on exposure and watering conditions.
How to overwinter a potted hydrangea? Leave it outside — hydrangeas are hardy and need cold for dormancy. Do not prune in autumn. Mulching at the base protects the roots during harsh winters. In case of severe frost, bring the pot indoors to a frost-free sheltered spot.

The Hydrangea macrophylla 'Early Rosa', or Pink Hydrangea, is a shrub with spectacular blooms native to East Asia — Japan and China. Its large round flower heads in shades from soft pink to bright pink bloom generously early in the season. Its early flowering makes it one of the first hydrangeas to brighten terraces and balconies. H45 cm | Pot Ø23 cm at delivery.
Hardy, easy to care for. Note: toxic to animals. Discover it in our selection of plants for balconies and terraces.
Which Hydrangea variety to choose?
Our catalog offers several hydrangeas with distinct characters:
- Hydrangea 'Early Rosa' (this plant) — large round heads from soft pink to bright pink, early blooming. The most romantic pink.
- Hydrangea 'Early Blue' — large intense blue heads, also early blooming. The most classic blue.
- Hydrangea 'Pink Annabelle' — large soft pink balls, compact and vigorous habit. The most generous.
- Hydrangea 'Strong Annabelle' — large white balls, very hardy. The most understated.
- Hydrangea serrata 'Pink Petticoat' — delicate pink lace flowers, compact size. The most refined.
- Hydrangea petiolaris — white climbing hydrangea, perfect against a shaded wall. The only climber.
Exposure & location
- Ideal exposure: partial shade to gentle sun — morning light or light afternoon shade.
- Avoid: scorching afternoon sun that wilts delicate flowers, strong wind.
- Substrate: rich, fresh, and well-drained.
- Note: unlike blue hydrangeas, the pink color does not depend on substrate acidity — it stays pink in all substrate types.
- Hardiness: hardy — withstands mild winters without protection.
- In a pot: balcony or terrace in partial shade, pot at least 30 cm in diameter.
Unlike blue varieties, its pink color is stable — you don’t need to monitor substrate acidity. Check our spring preparation guide for the right seasonal care.
Watering & care
- Watering: regular and generous — especially during flowering and hot periods.
- Frequency: every 2-3 days in summer, reduced in winter.
- Water: preferably non-calcareous water.
- Drainage: pot with drainage holes required.
- Fertilizer: special hydrangea or flowering plant fertilizer, once a month in spring-summer.
- Pruning: remove faded heads after flowering. Light structural pruning in March.
The hydrangea clearly signals water shortage — its leaves visibly wilt in strong heat. Water generously at the first signs. Check our complete watering guide to adjust the frequency.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
Its large round pink heads create a romantic and generous floral focal point.
- In a solo pot: in a large terracotta or white ceramic pot, its pink heads create a spectacular focal point on a partial shade terrace.
- In duo: pair it with a Hydrangea 'Early Blue' for a classic and effective pink-blue duo — same care, same early blooming.
- In combination: pair it with a Lavender Hidcote Blue for a fragrant pink-purple duo that attracts pollinators.
Keep dried flower heads in winter — they remain decorative for several months after flowering. Find more inspiration in our outdoor plants collection.
Verdeia tips
- Water generously — hydrangea consumes a lot of water during flowering. In a pot, check moisture every 2 days in hot weather.
- Remove faded flowers — after flowering, cut off faded heads to keep the plant tidy and prepare for next year’s bloom. Do not prune in autumn.
- Leave it outside in winter — Hardy, it does not need protection in most regions. Mulching at the base is enough during harsh winters. See our care calendar for the right actions by season.
- ⚠️ Toxic to animals — hydrangea is toxic if ingested by cats and dogs. See our plants and pets guide for suitable alternatives.
