Frequently Asked Questions
Why do the pink areas of a Calathea Triostar fade? It is almost always due to lack of light — move the plant closer to a window with bright indirect light and the new leaves will regain their intense pink and creamy areas.
Why do the leaves of a Calathea Triostar curl? It is the plant’s alarm signal — lack of water or insufficient ambient humidity, water immediately and mist the foliage before the edges turn brown and dry irreversibly.

🌿 Unique tricolor green, cream, and pink foliage • 🌤️ Partial shade to bright indirect light • 💧 Moderate watering • ✨ Easy care • 🐾 Non-toxic • 📏 H70 cm | Pot Ø19 cm
The Calathea 'Triostar' is a tropical plant with long lance-shaped leaves adorned with striking tricolor foliage — dark green marbled with cream and pale pink on the surface, with a deep red-purple underside revealed with every movement. No leaf is identical to another: each new shoot creates its own color distribution, making each plant absolutely unique.
Native to the humid tropical forests of Brazil, it is botanically a Stromanthe sanguinea 'Triostar' — a cousin of the Calatheas in the Marantaceae family, sharing the same fascinating nyctinastic behavior. Its leaves fold up in the evening and open in the morning, a living movement shared by all plants in the Calathea & Maranta family.
Which variety of Calathea to choose?
The Calathea 'Triostar' stands out for its unique tricolor palette. Here is how it compares to other Calatheas in the catalog:
- Calathea 'Triostar' (this plant) — long leaves green, cream, and pink on the surface, deep red-purple underside. The most colorful and tricolored.
- Calathea Medallion — large round leaves with complex green and silver medallion patterns, purple underside. The most graphic with round patterns.
- Calathea Makoyana — translucent leaves with light and dark green stained glass patterns, purple underside. The most transparent and artistic.
- Calathea Orbifolia — large round leaves with regular silver stripes. The brightest and cleanest.
- Calathea Ornata — dark green foliage with fine pink stripes. The most graphic with pink lines.
- Calathea Warscewiczii — velvety dark green foliage with purple underside. The most velvety.
- Calathea Lancifolia — elongated light green foliage with dark green spots, purple underside. The most original with an elongated shape.
The Triostar is the only Calathea that blends three distinct colors on the top of the leaves — green, cream, and pink — plus the red-purple underside: a unique chromatic complexity in the family.
Exposure & placement
The Calathea 'Triostar' needs bright indirect light to maintain the intensity of its pink and creamy areas — in insufficient light, new leaves gradually turn green. Direct sun burns the pink and creamy parts within hours. Its high humidity requirement makes it especially comfortable in a humid and bright room like a bathroom.
- Ideal exposure: bright indirect light — north or east-facing window, bright room without direct sun.
- Tolerates: partial shade, naturally high ambient humidity.
- Avoid: direct sunlight that burns the pink and creamy areas, dry air from heating.
- Temperature: 18–25 °C, without sudden changes or drafts.
- Substrate: light, rich, and well-draining — universal potting soil with perlite.
If the pale pink areas on new leaves fade, move the plant closer to a window — it is bright indirect light that activates the production of pink and cream pigments.
Watering & care
The Triostar is sensitive to water quality — use non-limescale water to avoid brown edges appearing on the leaves, a characteristic sign of damage caused by limescale or fluoride on Marantaceae.
- Watering: moderate — keep the substrate slightly moist without ever letting it become soggy.
- Frequency: about once a week in spring-summer; reduce slightly in winter.
- Water: non-calcareous — filtered, rainwater, or water left to stand for 24 hours.
- Humidity: regularly mist the foliage or place the pot on moist clay pebbles — prefers 60–70%.
- Drainage: essential — pot must have drainage holes, saucer emptied after watering.
- Fertilizer: diluted liquid fertilizer for green plants, once a month in spring and summer.
Leaves curling in on themselves are the Triostar’s alarm signal — water as soon as you notice this behavior, before the edges brown and dry irreversibly.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The tricolor foliage of the Calathea 'Triostar' is complex enough to be a focal point on its own — its pink, cream, and green shades visually shift depending on the light. To create a setting around it, check out our ideas to create a tropical atmosphere.
- In a Marantaceae duo: pair it with a Maranta with green, red, and cream leaves — two plants that share the same nyctinastic movement, a lively duo that moves in rhythm and whose color palettes respond to each other.
- In a bright bathroom: the natural ambient humidity benefits it — place it in a pink relief ceramic decorative pot whose rosy tone harmonizes with the pink areas of the foliage.
- In a colorful trio: pair it with a Calathea Ornata and a Calathea Medallion for a composition entirely of Marantaceae with very different patterns — fine pink stripes, round medallion motifs, and a misty tricolor.
- Decorative pot and colorimetry: the deep red-purple underside of the leaves stands out particularly well against a matte pink Groovy decorative pot — a warm harmony between the plant’s purple and the ceramic’s soft pink.
Verdeia tips
- Use non-calcareous water: the characteristic brown edges of the Triostar disappear within a few leaf generations as soon as you switch to filtered or rainwater — this is the simplest and most effective change to improve the foliage’s appearance.
- Maintain high ambient humidity: in heated apartments during winter, mist the foliage 2 to 3 times a week or place the pot on a bed of moist clay pebbles — the Triostar suffers from dry heating air much more than classic Calatheas.
- Watch the leaves to assess health: leaves curl when the plant lacks water or humidity, and stretch toward the floor when they receive too much direct light — these signals help adjust conditions before irreversible damage occurs.
Do not move the Triostar frequently — like all Stromanthe, it prefers a stable location and takes several weeks to adjust to a new spot, risking losing some leaves in the meantime.
