Calathea 'Fusion White' has rounded leaves where cream white and green are arranged in bold, asymmetrical patches, with each leaf creating a different map. The deep purple undersides become visible whenever the foliage lifts. This horticultural cultivar, originating from species native to the humid understories of South America, is the rarest of the Calatheas in the catalog.
Its distinctive feature is the instability of its variegation: the white areas lack chlorophyll, which explains its slow growth and need for generous indirect light. One leaf may emerge almost entirely white, another almost entirely green, with no way to predict it.
Which Calathea should you choose?
The Calathea genus includes very different types of foliage — here is how to place Fusion White among the varieties in the catalog:
- Calathea 'Fusion White' (this plant) — asymmetrical cream-white and green patches, with purple undersides. The rarest and lightest variety.

Exposure & placement
Fusion White requires more light than green Calatheas because its white areas do not contribute to photosynthesis. But direct sun burns these same areas within a few hours: the key is finding a balance between generous brightness and consistent filtering.
- Light: bright indirect light — an east- or north-facing window, or a south-facing window with a thick sheer curtain.
- Location: bathroom, bedroom, living room near a sheer-curtained window — away from radiators and drafts.
- Temperature: 18 to 26 °C — minimum 16 °C, highly sensitive to cold.
- Soil type: light and rich in organic matter — potting soil for green plants mixed with coco coir and perlite.
A plant placed in too much shade produces noticeably greener leaves to compensate: the white variegation fades on new growth, while the older leaves remain unchanged.
Watering & Care
This is one of the most demanding houseplants in terms of humidity. The substrate should remain slightly moist at all times, but it is primarily air humidity that determines the condition of the leaf edges.
- Watering: regular — as soon as the surface of the substrate begins to dry, approximately twice a week in spring and summer and once a week in winter.
- Water: strictly non-calcareous — filtered, rainwater, or water left to stand for 24 hours, at room temperature.
- Humidity: 60 to 70% — daily misting is essential, or place the pot on a bed of damp clay pebbles.
- Drainage: essential — use a pot with drainage holes and empty the saucer after each watering.
- Foliage: a gentle wipe with a damp cloth is enough, as the white areas are more fragile than the rest of the leaf blade.
- Fertilizer: liquid fertilizer for green plants diluted to one-quarter strength, once a month from April to September only.

Decor Ideas & Plant Pairings
The cream-white foliage visibly brightens a dark corner and looks like a rare plant, almost a collector's piece. It needs a neutral background so it does not get visually lost.
- For a shared humid corner, pair it with a Calathea orbifolia with broad striped leaves — the same humidity requirements, with two complementary foliage scales.
- To enhance the purple tones, place a Maranta 'Fascinator' with bright red veins beside it — the same botanical family and the same nightly folding of the leaves.

- Group it with other tropical plants: several plants gathered together create a humid microclimate through evapotranspiration. This is the most effective way to maintain the 60 to 70% humidity it needs, much more so than occasional misting.
- Use fertilizer at quarter strength, not half strength: the white areas without chlorophyll make the plant less vigorous and more sensitive to excess mineral salts, which burn the roots and blacken the leaf edges.
- Remove entirely white leaves: a leaf without any green produces no energy and draws on the plant's reserves. Cutting it at the base in spring redirects the plant's energy towards variegated shoots.
