Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Ficus carica Panache hardy? Yes, it can withstand down to -10 degrees C once well established. Protect it during the first two years with a frost cloth or bring it indoors to a sheltered spot during severe cold. In a sheltered and sunny location, it can stay outside all year round.
Why is my fig tree not producing figs? The main cause is a lack of sunlight — it needs at least 4 to 6 hours of direct sun per day. Other possible reasons: pruning too late in autumn which removes fruit buds, insufficient watering during fruiting, or a plant that is too young and needs 2 to 3 years before producing significantly.

🍃 Green and cream variegated foliage • 🍑 Edible figs • ☀️ Sun to partial shade • 💧 Moderate watering • 📏 H40 cm | Pot Ø15 cm • ❄️ Hardy • 🐾 Non-toxic
The Ficus carica 'Panaché', or Variegated Fig Tree, is a rare ornamental variety of the Mediterranean fig tree. Its large lobed leaves marbled in green and cream are unique among fig trees — a decorative foliage in its own right, which also produces edible figs in late summer.
Hardy, drought-tolerant, and easy to grow in a pot, it is perfectly suited for sunny balconies and terraces. A fruiting and ornamental shrub at once, discover it in our selection of fruiting and aromatic plants.
Which fig tree variety should you choose?
Each fig tree has its strengths — foliage, harvest period, hardiness, or compactness. Here’s how the Panaché ranks in our fig tree collection:
- Ficus carica 'Panaché' (this plant) — unique green and cream marbled foliage, edible figs, compact habit. The most ornamental.
- Ficus carica 'Little Miss Figgy' — very productive dwarf variety, dark purple figs, ideal for small spaces. The most compact and generous.
- Ficus carica 'Précoce de Dalmatie' — harvest from June-July, dark purple figs, abundant production. The earliest.
- Ficus carica 'Brown Turkey' — very hardy, withstands down to -15 °C, brown-purple figs. The most cold-resistant.
- Ficus carica 'Bornholm' — compact habit, dark purple figs, ideal for balconies. The balanced version.
The Panaché is the only variety with decorative foliage in our catalog — if ornamentation is as important as the harvest, this is the one.
Exposure & location
The Ficus carica 'Panaché' is a Mediterranean plant — sunlight is its primary condition to produce figs and fully develop its variegation. The sunnier the exposure, the more abundant the harvest.
- Ideal exposure: full sun to partial shade — at least 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.
- Location: sunny balcony or terrace, facing south or southwest.
- Hardiness: hardy down to -10 °C — can stay outdoors year-round in mild regions.
- Soil: rich and well-drained — potting soil for fruit trees or enriched universal potting mix.
- Pot: minimum 30–40 cm diameter for good root development.
Variegation is more intense and contrasted with good sun exposure. In partial shade, the foliage tends to turn greener and fruiting is reduced.
Watering & care
- Watering: moderate — allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings.
- Frequency: 1 to 2 times per week in summer, reduced in winter. More regular watering during fruiting.
- Drainage: essential — pot must have drainage holes, no standing water in the saucer.
- Fertilizer: once a month in spring and summer with a liquid fertilizer for fruit trees.
- Pruning: light pruning at the end of winter to maintain a compact shape and encourage fruiting.
- Repotting: every 2–3 years in spring into a slightly larger pot.
The fig tree produces two harvests per year under good conditions: one in June-July on last year’s wood, and one in August-September on new shoots. Check out our new plant care guide to get off to a good start.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The Variegated Fig Tree is one of the few fruit plants that is as decorative as it is productive. Its cream and green marbled foliage catches the eye even outside the fruiting season.
- Solo on a balcony: in a large terracotta or wooden pot, it instantly brings a Mediterranean vibe. One alone is enough to transform a terrace.
- In arrangement: pair it with lavender, rosemary, or an olive tree for a coherent and aromatic Mediterranean urban garden corner.
- Ideal pot: natural terracotta or wood — warm materials enhance its Mediterranean character better than cold ceramic.
Its purple figs against cream and green variegated foliage create a very decorative contrast in late summer — both productive and aesthetic.
Verdeia tips
- Sun above all — without at least 4 to 6 hours of direct sun per day, no figs. This is its non-negotiable condition. A north-facing balcony is not suitable.
- Water more during fruiting — during fig formation, lack of water causes premature fruit drop before maturity. Maintain regular watering from June to September.
- Prune at the end of winter, not in autumn — autumn pruning removes fruit buds already formed for the June harvest. Wait until February-March, after the coldest weather.
- Be patient for the first harvest — a young plant takes 2 to 3 years before producing significantly. The decorative foliage will keep you occupied while the fruiting establishes.
- Protect it during the first years — Hardy once established, it can suffer from frost before it is well rooted. A winter cover or moving it to a sheltered spot is enough for the first two seasons.
- 🐾 Non-toxic — the figs are edible and the plant is safe for pets. One of the few fruiting plants that is entirely pet-friendly.
