Frequently Asked Questions
How to extend the flowering of a Wallflower? Remove faded flowers as soon as they wilt — this is the most effective action. Without this regular pruning, the plant sets seed and stops flowering prematurely. A flowering plant fertilizer every 2-3 weeks also supports flower production.
Is the Wallflower frost-resistant? Yes, Erysimum is hardy down to -10°C and can stay outside year-round. Winter moisture is much more dangerous than cold — ensure excellent drainage to prevent root rot in winter.

💜 Spectacular and fragrant purple flowering • 🌿 Contrasting gray-green foliage • 🐝 Honey plant • ☀️ Full sun • 💧 Moderate watering • 🐾 Non-toxic
Erysimum 'Purple Glow', or Purple Wallflower, is a flowering perennial native to Mediterranean and European regions. Its clusters of bright purple, enchanting-scented flowers contrast with narrow gray-green foliage — a compact, generous, and highly honey-producing plant that perfumes balconies and terraces from spring to summer. H30 cm | Pot Ø13 cm.
Hardy, drought-resistant, non-toxic. Discover it in our selection of plants for sunny balconies.
Exposure & Location
- Ideal exposure: full sun — at least 6 hours per day for abundant flowering.
- Ideal: south-facing balcony, terrace, planter, border, or rock garden.
- Hardiness: down to -10 °C — can stay outdoors year-round in most regions.
- Substrate: light, well-draining, and poor — universal potting soil with sand or perlite.
- Avoid: stagnant moisture that causes root rot.
The more sun it receives, the more abundant its flowering and the stronger its scent. Check our spring preparation guide for essential seasonal care tips.
Watering & Care
- Watering: moderate — allow the substrate to dry between waterings.
- Frequency: 1 to 2 times per week in summer, greatly reduced in winter.
- Drainage: pot with drainage holes and draining substrate — essential.
- Fertilizer: diluted flowering plant fertilizer, once a month in spring and summer.
- Pruning: regularly remove faded flowers to extend flowering and encourage new buds.
Removing faded flowers is the most effective way to prolong flowering — each flower removed stimulates new bud production. Check our flowering calendar to plan your blooming terrace.
Decoration Ideas & Plant Combinations
Its bright purple and scent create a colorful and sensory focal point — a plant appreciated both visually and aromatically.
- In combination: pair it with a Lavender Hidcote Blue for a very fragrant and honey-rich violet-purple duo — same exposure, watering, and hardiness.
- In a planter: combine the purple of Erysimum with white or yellow flowers for a spectacular color contrast.
- Ideal pot: terracotta, terra cotta, or matte white ceramic pot — natural materials complement its Mediterranean character.
Its scent is especially intense in the morning and evening — place it near an outdoor lounge or window to fully enjoy it. Find more flowering plants in our Mediterranean urban garden selection.
Verdeia Tips
- Regularly remove faded flowers — this is the key action for continuous flowering from spring to summer. Without deadheading, the plant sets seed and stops flowering.
- Excellent drainage is essential — stagnant moisture is its only real risk. Too heavy a substrate or a pot without drainage holes quickly causes root rot.
- Leave it outside in winter — hardy down to -10 °C, it does not need protection in most regions. Check our maintenance calendar for the right care by season.
