💙 Spectacular blue and white bicolor flowers • 🌸 Long flowering from July to September • ☀️ Full sun • 🌡️ Hardy down to -7 °C • 💧 Regular watering in summer • 📏 H75 cm | Pot Ø19 cm
The Agapanthus 'Fireworks' is a perennial evergreen with bright green ribbon-like foliage, topped with slender flower stalks bearing large umbels of deep blue and pure white bicolor flowers. Native to South Africa, the species gave rise to this cultivar awarded the Award of Garden Merit by the Royal Horticultural Society, now a centerpiece of the Agapanthus catalog.
Its uniqueness: it is the world's first bicolor evergreen and remontant Agapanthus, capable of flowering continuously for three months. The contrast between the dark petiole and the bicolor florets produces the "fireworks" effect that gives it its name — a graphic and contemporary silhouette that fits equally well in a tropical pot composition or a structured border.
Which Agapanthus to choose?
The Agapanthus collection from the Verdeia catalog offers several cultivars with distinct flowerings. Here is how to place this 'Fireworks' among the available varieties:
- Agapanthus 'Fireworks' (this plant) — bicolor blue and white, tall habit (75 cm), remontant and evergreen. The only bicolor Agapanthus in the world awarded the AGM by the RHS, with a spectacular fireworks effect.
- Agapanthus 'Ever Sapphire' — deep sapphire blue solid color, tall habit (75 cm), evergreen and remontant. For an intense monochrome touch in large format.
- Agapanthus 'Ever White' — pure white, compact habit (30 cm), evergreen and remontant. Ideal for small spaces, borders, and pots on balconies.
- Agapanthus 'Poppin Purple' — intense purple violet, compact habit (30 cm), evergreen and remontant. For colorful flowerbeds and graphic compositions on terraces.
Exposure & location
The Agapanthus 'Fireworks' needs direct and abundant light to produce its spectacular umbels. The more sun it receives, the more generous and long-lasting the flowering.
- Exposure: full sun — at least 6 hours of direct sun per day for optimal flowering.
- Location: sunny terrace, balcony, garden, border or flowerbed — ideal in a pot for a south-facing terrace.
- Temperature: hardy down to -7 °C — protect the pot with a frost cloth in case of prolonged frost, or bring it indoors to an unheated frost-free room.
- Soil type: draining, rich, neutral to slightly acidic — mix of flowering plant potting soil + coarse sand or pumice to prevent any water stagnation.
In Mediterranean climates, Agapanthus can stay outside all year — in colder climates, thick mulching or moving it against a sheltered wall is usually enough to get it through winter without damage.
Watering & care
Agapanthus is an undemanding plant that tolerates drought well once established. It is during growth and flowering that regular watering must be maintained to support the continuous appearance of flower stalks — a lack of water at this time is among the common causes of yellowing foliage.
- Summer watering: regular, about 2 to 3 times a week in a pot, as soon as the substrate surface dries — the water must flow freely from the bottom of the pot.
- Winter watering: very reduced or stopped if the plant is brought indoors — too wet a substrate in cold periods causes rot of the fleshy roots.
- Drainage: essential — always empty the saucer after each watering, Agapanthus hates having its feet in the water.
- Fertilization: apply a potassium-rich fertilizer every 15 days from April to August to support flowering.
- Care: cut faded flower stalks at the base after flowering — leave the foliage in place, it feeds the reserves for the following year.
- Division: every 3 to 4 years in spring, divide the clump to revive vigor and flowering.
Agapanthus blooms better when its roots are cramped — do not use a pot too large compared to the root ball, as this hinders flowering.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
With its graphic flower stalks rising above the foliage, the Agapanthus 'Fireworks' adds verticality and color to any outdoor arrangement, and is especially suited to an easy-care flowering terrace.
- For a contemporary Mediterranean terrace, pair it with an Olea europaea (Olive tree) with gray-green foliage and a Lavandula Hidcote Blue — three complementary textures and heights for a sunny, drought-resistant scene.
- For a romantic blue-pink floral duo, place it alongside a Hydrangea Early Blue — the large dense balls of the hydrangea complement the airy umbels of the Agapanthus, two summer blooms that converse in cool tones.
- To highlight the verticality of the stalk, place it in a Elho Greenville Round White pot Ø20 cm — the light base brings out the deep blue of the florets and amplifies the fireworks effect.
- For a more natural and tonal note, choose a Capi Nature Groove taupe pot Ø22 cm — the matte finish and mineral tone anchor the plant in a sober contemporary terrace without competing with the green foliage.
Avoid very windy locations: the tall, thin flower stalks of Agapanthus can bend or break in gusts — a sheltered spot prolongs the flowering period.
Verdeia tips
- Keep it cramped: unlike most plants, Agapanthus flowers better when its roots are tight — repot only every 3 to 4 years, and then choose a container just slightly larger than the previous one.
- Cut off faded flowers at the base: as soon as an umbel is finished, cut the stalk at the base near the foliage with clean pruning shears — this stimulates the production of new stalks and prevents the plant from wasting energy forming seeds.
- Protect the base in winter: in frost-prone areas, mulch the base with a thick layer of dead leaves or straw — the foliage may be damaged by cold but the base, well protected, will regrow in spring.
