🤍 Spectacular star-shaped white flowers • 🌸 Fragrant summer bloom • ☀️ Bright indirect light to filtered sun • 🌴 Tropical indoor or veranda plant • 💧 Moderate water • 📏 H80 cm | Pot Ø27 cm
Hymenocallis speciosa, also known as Spider Lily or Hymenocallis, produces spectacular star-shaped white flowers in summer, featuring a central cup-shaped corolla surrounded by slender petals spread like spider legs. Native to the Antilles and the Caribbean, this exotic bulbous plant with a strong, sweet fragrance is one of the most spectacular tropical indoor plants in the catalog.
Its uniqueness: a summer bloom of rare graphic elegance, borne on long stalks emerging from a tuft of shiny deep green strap-like leaves. Few indoor plants combine such structural foliage, sculptural flowering, and refined fragrance in one plant.
Light & Placement
Hymenocallis prefers bright indirect light or filtered morning sun. Too little light compromises flowering, while direct scorching sun in midsummer damages the leaves. In temperate climates, it is grown indoors in bright conditions year-round or can be placed on a sheltered terrace once night temperatures exceed 18 °C.
- Light: bright indirect light to filtered sun — east or south-facing window behind a sheer curtain, never direct scorching sun.
- Placement: bright living room, veranda, sheltered terrace in summer — away from cold drafts and direct heating.
- Temperature: 18 to 28 °C in season — minimum 13 °C in winter, non-hardy plant sensitive to frost.
- Soil type: rich and well-draining — flowering plant potting mix mixed with river sand or perlite, neutral pH.
Once flower buds appear, do not move the plant — Hymenocallis is sensitive to changes in orientation and may abort its flowers if turned during peak growth.
Watering & Care
Hymenocallis appreciates regular watering during the growing and flowering season but dislikes water stagnation that causes bulb rot. Overwatering is among the most common mistakes with tropical bulbous plants.
- Watering: 1 to 2 times per week in spring and summer, allowing the substrate surface to dry between waterings — reduce drastically in winter, almost dry.
- Drainage: essential — pot with drainage holes, clay pebbles at the bottom, saucer always emptied.
- Humidity: moderate to high — occasionally mist foliage in summer and during winter heating periods.
- Fertilizer: liquid fertilizer for flowering plants, rich in potassium, every two weeks from March to September to support flowering.
- Winter rest: reduce watering from October and place the plant in a cooler room (12 to 15 °C) until spring — this rest period conditions flowering for the following year.
Cut flower stalks close to the tuft once flowering is over — this prevents the plant from exhausting energy on seed formation at the expense of the bulb.
Decor Ideas & Plant Pairings
With its sculptural flowering and upright habit, Hymenocallis stands out as a centerpiece to create a green relaxation corner in a bright interior or veranda.
- For a white indoor flower duo, pair it with a Spathiphyllum 'Sweet Silvana' of the same 80 cm size — the long-lasting white spathes complement the star-shaped umbels of Hymenocallis in a harmonious dual bloom.
- For an XXL tropical jungle, surround it with a Strelitzia Nicolai with large palms and a Bushy Ficus lyrata in the same Pot Ø27 cm size — three statement pieces that transform a veranda or large living room into a domestic tropical forest.
- For foliage contrast, combine Hymenocallis with a Calathea Makoyana with stained-glass patterns on the floor — the mineral graphic of the flowers contrasts with the transparent, veined foliage of Calathea for a refined composition.
- To highlight the flowering in a simple decorative pot, choose a large matte light ceramic or natural fiber decorative pot in Ø30 cm size — a neutral background enhances the whiteness of the flowers and their star-shaped graphic without distracting the eye.
Place Hymenocallis near a dining corner or sofa to enjoy its sweet fragrance that spreads at dusk — the time when the scent reaches its maximum intensity.
Verdeia Tips
- Respect the winter rest period: drastically reduce watering from November to February and place the plant in a cool room (12 to 15 °C). Without this rest, the bulb will not flower the following summer.
- Cut faded flower stalks at the base: cut the flower stem just above the bulb once the last flower has faded — this allows the bulb to focus energy on reserve formation for the next flowering.
- Divide the tuft every 4 to 5 years: in spring, gently remove the plant from its pot and separate the bulbils formed around the main bulb. Replant them immediately in a well-draining substrate to multiply the plant.
