Frequently Asked Questions
Why are the leaves of my Homalomena turning yellow? Yellowing is almost always due to overwatering or standing water in the saucer. Reduce watering frequency, empty the saucer after each watering, and let the surface of the soil dry slightly before watering again.
Is the Homalomena Lemon Lime toxic to pets? Yes, it contains irritating calcium oxalates and is toxic if ingested by dogs and cats. Keep it out of reach of your pets and young children.

🌿 Bright lemon green foliage • 🎨 Large shiny heart-shaped leaves • ☀️ Partial shade • 💧 Moderate watering • 📏 H30 cm | Pot Ø15 cm • ⚠️ Toxic to animals
The Homalomena 'Lemon Lime' is a compact tropical plant native to the undergrowth of Southeast Asia. Its large, shiny heart-shaped leaves in bright lemon green bring an immediate touch of freshness and vitality — a rare color among shade plants that brightens dim spaces without direct sun.
Easy to care for, tolerates low light, compact size H30 cm | Pot Ø15 cm. Note: toxic if ingested by animals.
Which Homalomena variety to choose?
Two Homalomenas are available in our catalog — very contrasting profiles:
- Homalomena 'Lemon Lime' (this plant) — bright lemon green foliage, shiny heart-shaped leaves, compact size H30 cm | Pot Ø15 cm. The brightest and most compact.
- Homalomena Rubescens 'Maggy' — very large dark green leaves with purple undersides, impressive size H90 cm | Pot Ø24 cm. The largest and most bicolored.
The Lemon Lime is the ideal choice for small spaces and dim corners where you want to add color without clutter. The Rubescens Maggy suits spaces that can accommodate a large structural plant.
Exposure & location
The Homalomena 'Lemon Lime' is one of the few colorful foliage plants that thrives in low light — a valuable asset for dark spaces.
- Ideal exposure: partial shade to soft indirect light — indoor office, hallway, bedroom away from windows.
- Tolerates: low light — even without direct natural light.
- Avoid: direct sunlight that burns the leaves and fades the lemon color.
- Temperature: 18–27 °C, without sudden changes or drafts.
- Substrate: light and well-drained — universal potting soil with perlite.
Unlike most colorful foliage plants that need light to keep their hues, the Lemon Lime keeps its lemon green even in low-light spaces — this is its main quality.
Watering & care
- Watering: moderate — let the surface of the soil dry slightly between waterings.
- Frequency: about once a week in spring and summer, reduced in winter.
- Drainage: pot must have drainage holes, empty saucer after watering.
- Humidity: prefers 50–70% humidity — mist occasionally in very dry air.
- Fertilizer: diluted liquid fertilizer for green plants, once a month in spring and summer.
- Cleaning: gently wipe the leaves with a damp cloth to preserve their shiny glow.
The Homalomena tolerates occasional missed waterings well — when in doubt, wait rather than water too much. Overwatering is its main cause of yellowing. Check out our complete watering guide to adjust frequency by season.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The lemon green of the Homalomena 'Lemon Lime' is a rare color among shade plants — it brings vitality where most shade-tolerant plants stay in very dark tones.
- In a dark corner: its bright lemon green creates an immediate visual contrast even without direct light — placed on dark furniture, the effect is striking.
- In arrangements: pair it with a dark green Aglaonema or a Zamioculcas for a very effective contrast of shades in low-light spaces.
- Ideal pot: matte white, gray, or terracotta ceramic — neutral tones highlight the lemon green without competing with it.
Its compact size D15 x H30 cm makes it an ideal plant for offices, dark windowsills, or shelves — places where a larger plant would be cumbersome.
Verdeia tips
- Lemon green stable even in partial shade — this is its uniqueness. Unlike Spring Red or Croton, which turn green without enough light, Lemon Lime keeps its lemon color even in low-light spaces.
- Yellow leaves: overwatering — always empty the saucer after watering and let the surface dry slightly between waterings. Yellowing is almost always due to stagnant moisture.
- Slow growth — be patient — Homalomena grows slowly but steadily. Repot only when roots appear under the pot, every 2 to 3 years.
- Protect it from drafts — sensitive to sudden temperature changes. Keep away from poorly insulated windows in winter.
- ⚠️ Toxic to pets and humans — contains irritating calcium oxalates. Keep out of reach of cats, dogs, and young children. See our plants and pets guide for suitable alternatives.
