Frequently Asked Questions
Why do the leaves of my Calathea fold at night? This is a natural behavior called nyctinasty — the leaves lift and fold in response to changes in light, a sign that your plant is healthy.
How can I prevent brown edges on Calathea leaves? Use filtered water or water left out for 24 hours, and regularly mist the foliage — lime scale and lack of humidity are the two main causes.

🐾 Non-toxic • 🌿 Green spotted foliage with purple underside • 🎨 Patterns reminiscent of a rattlesnake • ☀️ Partial shade • 💧 Moderate watering
The Calathea Lancifolia 'Insignis', also known as the Rattlesnake Plant, is recognized for its elongated light green leaves spotted with dark green and its spectacular purple underside — a unique pattern that resembles rattlesnake skin. Native to the tropical forests of Brazil, it naturally grows in moist, shaded undergrowth. Discover our full Calathea collection.
Its most fascinating feature: its leaves fold up at night and unfold during the day — a living movement visible to the naked eye, shared with Marantas and Ctenanthe of the same family. Our article on the Maranta explains this phenomenon in detail.
Exposure & Location
The Calathea Lancifolia tolerates low light better than most tropical plants — this is one of its strengths. Direct sunlight quickly burns its delicate foliage and dulls its patterns.
- Exposure: partial shade to indirect light — tolerates low light, avoids direct sun.
- Ideal for: living room, office, bedroom, bright bathroom.
- Temperature: 18 to 25 °C, protected from sudden changes and drafts.
- Substrate: light, rich, and well-draining — universal potting soil with perlite.
Watering & Care
- Watering: moderate — keep the substrate slightly moist without ever letting it become soggy.
- Water: prefer filtered or room temperature water — hard water causes characteristic brown edges on the leaves.
- Drainage: essential — pot with drainage holes and well-draining substrate.
- Humidity: enjoys a humid atmosphere (60–70%) — mist regularly or place in a bright bathroom.
- Fertilizer: once a month in spring and summer, diluted liquid fertilizer for green plants.
Decor Ideas & Plant Pairings
Its elongated, spotted leaves strongly contrast with round, smooth foliage — this contrast in shapes is the key to an interesting composition with the Lancifolia.
- Pair with: a Calathea Orbifolia with large, round, silver-striped leaves — the spotted elongated leaves of the Lancifolia and the broad leaves of the Orbifolia create a striking duo within the same graphic style.
- In the Marantaceae family: pair it with a Maranta Leuconeura — both species share the nocturnal leaf movement and complement each other perfectly in arrangements.
- Decorative pot: a white ceramic decorative pot highlights the purple underside when the leaves fold at the end of the day.
Verdeia Tips
- Non-hard water required: brown edges on Calathea leaves are almost always caused by hard tap water — use filtered water or water left out for 24 hours in an open container.
- Humidity above all: the Lancifolia suffers more from low ambient humidity than from lack of watering — mist the foliage 2 to 3 times a week or place the pot on a bed of moist clay pebbles.
- Enjoy the nocturnal movement: watch your leaves in the evening — if they stand up and fold properly, it’s a sign your plant is healthy and in good conditions.

Will the plant look exactly like the photo?
The photos accurately represent the variety and the stated size. Since each plant is unique, slight differences in shape, foliage, or color may occur — and that’s part of their charm.
What are the delivery times and conditions?
Shipping is done within 48 business hours, with tracked delivery within 2 to 5 business days. Delivery costs €5.60 — free for orders over €50. You will receive a tracking link as soon as the package is shipped.
What to do upon receiving my plant?
Open your package as soon as you receive it and carefully remove the plant from its packaging. Let it acclimate for 24 hours in its new environment before watering. If it has been slightly stressed during transport, it will recover its shape after one or two days in the light.
What to do if my plant arrives damaged?
Contact us within 48 hours with a photo of the issue. Our team will assess the situation and offer you the best solution: replacement, partial refund, or recovery advice.
Can I return a plant?
