🌸 Long fragrant white hanging clusters • 🌿 Vigorous climber • ☀️ Full sun to partial shade • ❄️ Hardy down to −10 °C • 📏 H65 cm | Pot Ø15 cm
Wisteria floribunda 'Alba', or Japanese white wisteria, is a majestic climber native to Japan, famous for its long clusters of delicately scented white flowers. Every spring, it is covered with cascading floral displays that transform pergolas, facades, and balconies into living paintings.
Hardy down to −10 °C, it improves with age: the older it gets, the more generous and spectacular its blooms become.
Which Wisteria variety to choose?
The Wisteria genus includes several species and colors with distinct characteristics. Here is how Wisteria floribunda 'Alba' stands out from other varieties in the catalog:
- Wisteria floribunda 'Alba' (this plant) — long, very fragrant white clusters, elegant spring bloom. The classic and pure white version.
- Wisteria floribunda 'Rosea' — delicate pale pink clusters, very fragrant, spring bloom. The romantic pink version.
- Wisteria floribunda 'Naga Noda' — very long, spectacular double violet clusters. The most sumptuous purple version.
- Wisteria sinensis 'Prolific' — abundant blue-violet clusters, early and repeat blooming. The most floriferous blue version.
- Wisteria sinensis 'Caroline' — very fragrant violet clusters, early bloom. The classic fragrant purple version.
Exposure & location
Wisteria thrives in full sun — this is essential for abundant flowering. In partial shade, it struggles and flowers little. It follows the same rule as clematis: the head in the sun, the roots in shade and coolness.
- Exposure: full sun — at least 6 hours per day for optimal flowering.
- Location: pergola, wall, railing, arch, or sturdy trellis — it can weigh several dozen kilos when mature.
- Soil: rich, fresh, and well-drained.
- Hardiness: down to −10 °C once well established.
Provide a very sturdy support from planting — a mature wisteria is a heavy and powerful plant capable of deforming light structures over the years.
Watering & care
Wisteria appreciates regular watering during growth and flowering periods, without waterlogging the soil. Pruning is the most important care — a structured winter pruning and light summer pruning help control its growth and stimulate future clusters.
- Watering: 1 to 2 times per week depending on heat, always at the base.
- Summer pruning: in July-August, shorten new shoots to 5–6 leaves.
- Winter pruning: in January-February, shorten the same branches to 2–3 buds.
- Fertilizer: low in nitrogen — a nitrogen-rich fertilizer promotes foliage at the expense of flowers.
If your wisteria does not flower, check two points: too much nitrogen in the soil and not enough sun — these are the two most common causes of a leafy wisteria without flowers.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The cascading fragrant white flowers of Wisteria 'Alba' create a romantic and medieval atmosphere. Its pure white matches all colors and garden styles.
- On a pergola or arch, the Trachelospermum 'Star of Venice' white fragrant jasmine complements the wisteria harmoniously — the two fragrant white climbers alternate blooming for an almost year-round floral green wall.
- For a contrasting climbing duo, the Clematis 'The President' violet pairs perfectly — the deep violet of the large star-shaped clematis flowers contrasts with the white hanging clusters of the wisteria for a spectacular two-tone effect.
- At the base of the wisteria, pair with the evergreen Lonicera henryi — its dark green foliage year-round dresses the bottom of the wall during winter, where the wisteria loses its leaves.
- For a red and white composition, the Climbing Rose Crazy in Love Red adds a warm and romantic note — the two climbers on the same trellis create a very elegant two-tone floral display.
Verdeia Tips
- Guide the stems from planting: wisteria is a twining climber that naturally coils — direct the main stems in the desired direction from the start, because once woody they become impossible to move without breaking.
- Follow the double pruning schedule: light pruning in summer (July-August) to 5–6 leaves, then structured pruning in winter (January-February) to 2–3 buds — this precise rhythm triggers flowering the following year.
- Repot every 2 to 3 years into a deep container: its strong roots need space — a wide and deep pot with rich, well-draining, and low-nitrogen substrate is essential for lasting flowering in a pot.
