🤍 White trumpet-shaped flowers with yellow throat • 🌿 Vigorous climbing plant • ☀️ Full sun to bright partial shade • 💧 Regular watering during flowering period • 📏 H55 cm | Pot Ø17 cm
Mandevilla sanderi 'Sundaville White' — also known as Dipladenia or Brazilian Jasmine — captivates with its long, generous white trumpet-shaped flowers with yellow throats and its shiny dark green foliage. Presented here on a bamboo tower, it forms a columnar silhouette ideal for structuring a balcony or dressing a terrace, and naturally fits among the outdoor climbing plants.
Native to Brazil, its flowering extends from spring until the first chills. Its velvety flowers, 6 to 7 cm in diameter, bring an immediate tropical touch to the most striking flowering plants in the catalog.
Exposure & location
Dipladenia is a plant for full sun or bright partial shade. Outdoors, place it in a warm spot sheltered from the wind, avoiding the harsh midday sun in summer which can fade the flowers and burn the foliage. Indoors in a bright room, place it near a south- or west-facing window, away from a radiator. The more generous the light, the more abundant the flowering.
- Exposure: full sun to bright partial shade — avoid harsh midday sun in summer.
- Location: balcony, terrace, veranda, pergola, or very bright interior — sheltered from wind.
- Temperature: 18 to 26 °C — frost-sensitive below 8 to 10 °C, bring indoors before the first chills.
- Substrate: rich, light, and well-drained potting soil — a mix of soil, potting soil, and sand works perfectly.
Turn the pot a quarter turn each week for balanced growth all around the bamboo tower and flowering distributed over the entire silhouette.
Watering & care
Mandevilla prefers a fresh but never waterlogged substrate. In spring and summer, water regularly as soon as the surface of the potting soil starts to dry: the finger test remains the most reliable method to adjust frequency. In autumn and winter, space watering out significantly and let the substrate dry between waterings. Excess moisture or poor drainage can cause yellowing of the foliage, which is best to anticipate.
- Watering: regular in spring and summer as soon as the surface of the potting soil dries — spaced out in autumn and winter, letting the substrate dry between waterings.
- Drainage: essential — always empty the saucer after each watering.
- Fertilizer: liquid fertilizer for flowering plants every two weeks from May to September.
- Pruning: cut back stems by one-third after winter to encourage dense flowering the following spring.
- Repotting: every 2 to 3 years in spring into a fresh, well-draining substrate.
In summer, spray the foliage with low-calcium water to recreate the humid atmosphere of its tropical origin and limit the appearance of red spider mites.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
The columnar silhouette and bright whiteness of Sundaville White make it a balcony star, fitting equally well as a standalone centerpiece or within an exotic composition structured by height.
- For a tropical composition paced by height, pair the Mandevilla tower with a Strelitzia Nicolai with banana-like foliage and a Citrus Calamondin with small orange fruits — three distinct forms, three flowering rhythms that extend the decorative effect throughout the season.
- To highlight the whiteness of the flowers on a balcony, place the tower in front of a light wall in a Celestial jute decorative pot Ø20 cm — the natural fiber softens the pot and enhances the romantic note of Brazilian Jasmine.
- For a graphic texture contrast, combine the columnar form and round flowers of Dipladenia with the sharp blade-like foliage of a Yucca elephantipes — the vertical lines of the yucca echo the upright silhouette of the tower.
- To enhance the whiteness in a tone-on-tone decorative pot, the Elho Vibes Fold white decorative pot Ø22 cm with a matte finish extends the immaculate note of the flowers, while the Capi Nature Skin anthracite pot plays the card of sober, contemporary contrast.
A decorative pot slightly larger than the root ball allows the plant to develop without risking root suffocation and facilitates quick drainage of watering water in summer.
Verdeia Tips
- Train as it grows: guide young stems around the tower supports as they lengthen and loosely tie them with raffia — this regular action preserves the columnar silhouette and prevents stems from drooping or tangling during full bloom.
- Prune after flowering to thicken the clump: cut back stems by one-third at the end of autumn or after winter — growth restarts more vigorously in spring and the next flowering naturally thickens with more buds at the tip of each stem.
- Overwinter in a cool, dry place: bring the plant indoors before the first chills into a bright room kept between 12 and 18 °C, and greatly reduce watering — this vegetative rest triggers generous flowering the following year.
