🌵 Very graphic, thick woody trunk • 🌿 Long, flexible, non-spiky leaves • ☀️ Bright light, tolerates direct sun • 💧 Infrequent watering • 🏜️ Tolerates dry air and missed waterings • 🪴 6 sizes available • 📏 from H55 cm | Pot Ø14 cm to H170 cm | Pot Ø27 cm
Yucca elephantipes, also known as indoor Yucca or elephant-foot Yucca, has a thickened brown trunk topped with rosettes of long, flexible, non-spiky deep-green leaves. Native to the dry regions of Mexico and Central America (Guatemala, El Salvador), it is one of the easiest Yuccas to care for in the catalogue.
Its distinctive feature lies in its growing method: the plant comes from a section of trunk grown from a cutting, from which one or more leaf heads emerge. This gives it the silhouette of a stylized small tree from the medium sizes onwards, and a decidedly sculptural look from H140 cm upwards. Six sizes work equally well on a shelf or in a living room corner.
Which Yucca should you choose?
The Yucca genus comes in several growth forms and sizes — here are the Yuccas in the catalogue:
- Yucca elephantipes (this plant) — thick trunk grown from a cutting, with flexible deep-green leaves (6 sizes: H55 cm | Pot Ø14 cm to H170 cm | Pot Ø27 cm). The most versatile version, available in the widest range of sizes.
- Yucca (living room palm) — compact, low clumping growth, without a visible trunk. The most discreet version, for a piece of furniture or a desk.
- Yucca elephantipes 'Maya Tree' — tiered trunks at several heights in the same pot (H80 cm | Pot Ø19 cm). The most tree-like and densest version.
- Yucca 'Tres Cañas' — three trunks of different heights grouped together (H70 cm | Pot Ø19 cm). The most graphic and visually balanced version.
Light & location
Yucca elephantipes requires as much light as possible: it is a plant from arid regions that tolerates several hours of direct sunlight perfectly well. A dark room quickly causes it to become leggy, with elongated, drooping leaves.
- Light: bright light to direct sun — in front of a south- or west-facing window, without a sheer curtain.
- Location: living room, conservatory, bright office, glazed landing — also on a sheltered terrace or balcony from May to September.
- Temperature: 15 to 28 °C — briefly tolerates 7 °C, bring indoors before the first frosts.
- Soil type: well-draining and sandy — cactus and succulent potting soil, or universal potting soil mixed with one-third coarse sand.
A plant placed too far from a light source will visibly lean towards the window within a few weeks — this is the first sign to watch for after installation.
Watering & care
The Yucca stores its reserves in its trunk and is far more sensitive to excess water than drought. A well-draining substrate is essential: a mix of potting soil, clay pebbles and perlite prevents water from stagnating around the roots.
- Watering: infrequent — wait until the substrate is dry all the way through, approximately every 15 days in spring and summer, and every 4 to 6 weeks in winter.
- Drainage: essential — use a pot with drainage holes, add a layer of clay pebbles at the bottom, and empty the saucer within an hour of watering.
- Humidity: no special requirements; it is perfectly suited to the dry air of heated interiors.
- Foliage: regularly dusting the leaves maintains the leaf blade's natural sheen and photosynthesis.
- Fertiliser: liquid fertiliser for green plants, diluted by half, once every 6 weeks from April to September only.
- Repotting: every 3 years in spring, in a pot only slightly wider — an oversized container retains moisture and causes the trunk to rot.
In winter, it is better to miss a watering than to overwater: the trunk draws on its own reserves for several weeks without harm.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
Its clean vertical form and bare trunk make it an ideal corner plant, filling the space without cluttering the floor. The larger sizes work particularly well in reception areas, an application detailed in our guide to greening a restaurant or café.
- For a duo of contrasting vertical plants, pair it with a Sansevieria 'Diamond Green' with upright, fan-shaped leaves — the Yucca's exposed trunk and the Sansevieria's compact clump occupy two different levels of the same corner.
- To highlight the trunk, slide the H140 or H170 cm size into a black Jorck basket Ø26 cm made of woven fibres — the dark, matte material conceals the nursery pot and highlights the bark.
- For a contemporary look, choose the anthracite Mayk Lead decorative pot Ø20 cm with a brushed metal finish for the H85 to H100 cm sizes — the mineral grey contrasts with the foliage's vibrant green.
- For a bright, uncluttered look, the ribbed white Elho Vibes Fold decorative pot Ø22 cm suits the H140 cm size and brightens a dark corner.
The H55 and H85 cm sizes fit on a console table or sideboard; from H100 cm upwards, the plant stands on the floor and becomes the room's focal point.
Verdeia tips
- Feel the trunk each month: a firm, hard trunk indicates a healthy plant. If it becomes soft or spongy at the base, this is a sign of prolonged overwatering — immediately space out waterings and check that water is draining properly from the pot.
- Turn the pot a quarter turn: the leaf heads orient themselves towards the light and the silhouette becomes unbalanced within a few months. Regular rotation keeps the rosette symmetrical and the growth upright.
- Cut the trunk to encourage branching: a clean cut across the trunk at the desired height, in spring, triggers the emergence of two or three new heads below the cut. The removed section can be propagated directly in a well-draining substrate.

Shipping is done within 48 business hours, with tracked delivery within 2 to 5 business days. Delivery costs €5.60 — free for orders over €50. You will receive a tracking link as soon as the package is shipped.
What to do upon receiving my plant?
Open your package as soon as you receive it and carefully remove the plant from its packaging. Let it acclimate for 24 hours in its new environment before watering. If it has been slightly stressed during transport, it will recover its shape after one or two days in the light.
What to do if my plant arrives damaged?
Contact us within 48 hours with a photo of the issue. Our team will assess the situation and offer you the best solution: replacement, partial refund, or recovery advice.
