Frequently Asked Questions
Does Miscanthus regrow every year? Yes, it is a deciduous perennial — it loses its foliage in winter and regrows vigorously in spring from the base. Annual pruning in March and a sunny location are enough to keep it healthy for many years.
Can Miscanthus be planted in a pot? Yes, but choose a large container at least 40 cm in diameter — Miscanthus develops an extensive root system. In a pot it dries out faster than in the ground, so water more regularly during hot periods.

🌾 Horizontally striped yellow and green leaves • 🤎 Bronze plumes in late summer • ☀️ Full sun • 💧 Moderate watering • ❄️ Very hardy • 🐾 Non-toxic
Miscanthus sinensis 'Strictus', known as Zebra Reed, is a large deciduous ornamental grass native to East Asia. Its long upright leaves are horizontally striped with characteristic yellow bands on a green background — a unique variegation that earned it the nickname "Zebra Grass." In late summer, beautiful bronze plumes rise above the foliage. Available in two sizes.
Very hardy, tolerant, non-toxic. Discover it in our selection of urban perennials and grasses.
Which grasses to pair?
Miscanthus 'Strictus' pairs perfectly with other grasses with contrasting characters:
- Miscanthus sinensis 'Strictus' (this plant) — horizontally striped yellow and green leaves, upright habit, large size. The most graphic and original.
- Pennisetum alopecuroides 'Hameln' — compact rounded clump, creamy white spikes in summer. The most floriferous and compact.
- Festuca glauca 'Azura Blue' — spiky, silvery blue evergreen clump, very compact. The strongest warm-cool contrast.
- Carex morrowii 'Ice Dance' — variegated green and cream foliage, evergreen. The brightest in winter.
The combination of Miscanthus 'Strictus' + Pennisetum 'Hameln' is very effective — large vertical form against small rounded form, horizontal stripes against feathery spikes.
Exposure & location
- Ideal exposure: full sun — the yellow stripes are more pronounced and the plumes more abundant in good light.
- Tolerates: light partial shade, wind.
- Soil: well-drained, moderately fertile — adapts to most soils.
- Hardiness: Very hardy — withstands harsh winters without protection.
- Uses: mass planting, container, border, or as a solitary accent plant.
In full sun, its yellow horizontal stripes are especially bright — a grass that stands out even from a distance. See our spring preparation guide for the right seasonal care.
Watering & maintenance
- Watering: moderate — drought tolerant once established.
- Pruning: cut the clump down by one-third in March, before growth resumes.
- Foliage: deciduous — leave the stems in place all winter; they are decorative and protect the plant’s core.
- Fertilizer: rarely needed — a light application in spring is enough.
Spring pruning is the only essential step — without it, new shoots struggle to emerge from old stems. Check our maintenance calendar so you don’t miss this key task.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
Its unique horizontal stripes and upright habit make it an accent grass that instantly structures a plant composition.
- Alone: planted solo in a large container or garden corner, it creates a strong architectural plant focal point — its yellow stripes immediately set it apart from other grasses.
- In arrangements: pair it with a Phormium 'Rubra Nana' for a striking grass duo — yellow horizontal stripes against coppery red ribbon-like foliage.
- In a container: its upright habit makes it an excellent large potted plant for a sunny terrace.
Its bronze plumes persist through winter and remain very decorative frosted at sunrise. Find more inspiration in our balcony and terrace plant selection.
Verdeia tips
- Prune in March — cut the clump down to one-third of its height before new growth starts. Do not prune in autumn — the stems protect the plant’s core and remain decorative all winter.
- Divide every 3-4 years — the clump tends to thin out in the center over time. Divide in spring to rejuvenate the plant. See our propagation guide for proper steps.
- Allow space — Miscanthus 'Strictus' can reach 150-180 cm tall at maturity, including plumes. Choose a generous spot where it can grow freely.
- 🐾 Non-toxic — Miscanthus is completely safe for dogs and cats.
