Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Bornholm fig tree suitable for a very small balcony? Yes, that is precisely its purpose. Its compact shape and moderate growth make it the fig tree best suited for small spaces. A pot 25 to 30 cm in diameter is enough, compared to 30 to 40 cm for other varieties. If your space is even smaller, check out the Little Miss Figgy, which is a dwarf variety that is even more compact.
When do Bornholm figs ripen? The main harvest is in July-August-September. The figs are ripe when they are soft to the touch, droop downward, and come off easily. A first small harvest can appear in June-July on the previous year's wood depending on conditions.

🍇 Dark purple figs • ☀️ Sun to partial shade • 💧 Moderate watering • 📏 H40 cm | Pot Ø15 cm • ❄️ Hardy -10°C • 🪴 Moderate growth • 🐾 Non-toxic
The Ficus carica 'Bornholm' is the most compact fig tree variety and the easiest to manage in a pot. Its moderate growth allows it to reach a maximum of 1.5 to 2 m — compared to 2 to 3 m for other varieties — making it the ideal choice for small balconies, terraces, or spaces where a large plant can’t be managed. It produces tasty dark purple figs without spreading out.
A Mediterranean fruit shrub designed for small spaces. Discover it in our selection of fruit and aromatic plants and our balconies and terraces collection.
Which fig tree variety to choose?
Each fig tree has its strengths — compactness, hardiness, earliness, or ornamental foliage. Here’s how the Bornholm fits into our fig tree collection:
- Ficus carica 'Bornholm' (this plant) — compact habit, moderate growth, dark purple figs, mature size 1.5–2 m. The easiest to manage in a pot.
- Ficus carica 'Little Miss Figgy' — even more compact dwarf variety, very productive. The smallest.
- Ficus carica 'Précoce de Dalmatie' — harvest from June-July, dark purple figs. The earliest.
- Ficus carica 'Brown Turkey' — ultra-Hardy down to -15 °C. The most cold-resistant.
- Ficus carica 'Panaché' — unique green and cream marbled foliage. The most ornamental.
The Bornholm is the balanced choice — compact without being dwarf, productive without being invasive. If you’re unsure between varieties and space is limited, this is the one.
Exposure & location
The Ficus carica 'Bornholm' is a compact Mediterranean fig tree — but like all fig trees, it needs sun to produce fruit.
- Ideal exposure: full sun to partial shade — minimum 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.
- Location: small sunny balcony or terrace, very bright windowsill.
- Hardy: resistant down to -10 °C — can stay outdoors year-round in regions with mild to moderate winters.
- Substrate: rich and well-drained — potting soil for fruit trees or enriched universal potting mix.
- Pot: minimum 25–30 cm diameter — slightly smaller than other varieties thanks to its more compact growth.
Its moderate growth does not require intensive regular pruning — a few light cuts in late winter are enough to maintain its compact shape. This is one of its main advantages over other fig trees.
Watering & care
- Watering: moderate — allow the substrate to dry slightly between waterings.
- Frequency: 1 to 2 times per week in summer, reduced in winter. More regular watering during fruiting.
- Drainage: pot must have drainage holes — no standing water in the saucer.
- Fertilizer: once a month in spring-summer with a liquid fertilizer for fruit trees.
- Pruning: light pruning in late winter (February-March) to maintain compact growth. Do not prune in autumn.
- Repotting: every 2–3 years in spring into a slightly larger pot.
Water regularly during fig formation and growth — lack of water causes premature dropping. Check our new plant care guide to get off to a good start.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
Its compact growth makes it an ideal plant for small space arrangements where every centimeter counts.
- On a small balcony: in a 25–30 cm terracotta pot, it creates a productive Mediterranean corner without taking up much space. Find our ideas in our set up my balcony collection.
- In a compact arrangement: pair it with a lavender or thyme in an adjacent pot for a coherent and aromatic mini Mediterranean garden.
- Ideal pot: natural terracotta or wood — warm materials enhance its Mediterranean character.
Its dark purple figs create an elegant contrast with the green foliage in late summer — a decorative and edible composition at once.
Verdeia tips
- Its moderate growth is an advantage, not a limitation — unlike other fig trees that can reach 2 to 3 m and require regular pruning, the Bornholm naturally stays between 1.5 and 2 m. Less work, same production.
- Prune at the end of winter, not in autumn — fruit buds form on last year’s wood starting in autumn. Always wait until February-March to prune.
- Water more during fruiting — from July to September, maintain regular watering to prevent premature fig drop.
- Be patient for the first harvest — 2 to 3 years are needed before significant production. The variety’s compactness fully develops once the shrub is well established.
- Protect it during the first years — hardy down to -10 °C once established, it can suffer frost during the first two seasons. A frost cloth or moving it to a sheltered spot is enough.
- 🐾 Non-toxic — the figs are edible and the plant is safe for pets.
