🤍 Star-shaped white flowers • 🎈 Balloon-shaped buds • 🌿 Easy hardy perennial • ☀️ Full sun to partial shade • 💧 Weekly watering • 🐾 Non-toxic • 📏 H22 cm | Pot Ø12 cm
Platycodon grandiflorus 'White' — also called Balloon flower or Large-flowered bellflower — charms with its swollen balloon-shaped flower buds that gradually open into large star-shaped pure white flowers. Native to East Asia, it is a very easy hardy perennial that naturally ranks among the easiest plants in the catalog.
Its flowering period stretches from June to September, attracting bees and butterflies. Compact and well-branched, the Balloon flower fits perfectly on a balcony, at the edge of a flowerbed, or in a pot on a terrace, and is among the plants to gift rich in symbolism: in Korea, its roots are eaten under the name doraji and the flower symbolizes eternal love and honesty.
Exposure & location
Platycodon prefers a sunny to partial shade exposure: a location receiving 4 to 6 hours of direct sun per day is ideal for generous flowering. In warm climates, partial shade in the afternoon protects the foliage and extends the flower duration. It is a hardy perennial that tolerates temperatures down to -20 °C once established — so it can remain in the ground or on an unprotected balcony all year round.
- Exposure: full sun to bright partial shade — 4 to 6 hours of direct sun per day for optimal flowering.
- Location: balcony, terrace, flowerbed edge, rock garden, planter — suitable for small spaces thanks to its compact habit.
- Temperature: hardy down to -20 °C — no winter protection needed in temperate climates.
- Soil type: well-drained, fresh, slightly enriched with organic matter — tolerates both calcareous and acidic soils.
In a pot, choose a container deep enough (at least 25 cm) because Platycodon develops a fleshy taproot that does not like to be disturbed — this is also why it’s best to avoid moving it once planted.
Watering & care
The Balloon flower prefers fresh but never waterlogged soil: its taproot stores reserves and fears excess water that causes collar rot. In spring and summer, water about once a week, more during heat waves or if the pot is in full sun. The finger test remains the most reliable method to adjust frequency according to the season. If you notice yellowing foliage, it is usually a sign of overwatering rather than lack of water.
- Watering: once a week in spring and summer, less in autumn, almost none in winter when the plant rests.
- Drainage: essential — always empty the saucer to avoid water stagnation at the collar.
- Fertilizer: balanced fertilizer for flowering plants every 4 to 6 weeks during flowering — avoid excess, which favors foliage over flowers.
- Pruning: remove faded flowers as they appear to encourage new buds; cut back dry stems at the end of autumn.
- Winter rest: the aerial part disappears in winter and regrows in spring from the base — this is normal, do not discard the plant.
At the end of winter, mark your Platycodon’s location with a small stake — the base restarts late in spring and it’s easy to forget or damage it when digging around.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The bright whiteness of the star-shaped flowers and the graphic silhouette of the balloon buds make Platycodon White a standout for borders or pots, especially comfortable in cottage or Mediterranean style compositions.
- For a summer flower border, pair Platycodon White with a Lavender Hidcote Blue with dark violet spikes and a Festuca glauca Azura Blue with bluish tufts — the white flowers pop against blue-violet tones and silvery foliage for a very bright border.
- For a balcony planter in white shades, combine Platycodon with a climbing Clematis armandii in the background and a Hydrangea Strong Annabelle with large white flower balls — three bloom periods spread over the season, from spring to late summer.
- For a structured rock garden, surround Platycodon with a Carex Irish Green with fine evergreen leaves — the contrast between the soft grass clump and the upright star-shaped flowers creates a balanced composition that remains decorative even after flowering.
- To enhance the whiteness in a tone-on-tone decorative pot, place the Balloon flower in a Elho Vibes Fold white decorative pot Ø22 cm with a matte finish or a Celestial jute decorative pot Ø20 cm made of natural fiber — two options that soften the growing pot and amplify the romantic note of the flowers.
Cut flowers at the closed balloon stage hold particularly well in a vase and continue to open one by one in water — a plus for making wildflower bouquets in full season.
Verdeia tips
- Stake the tallest stems: in full bloom, stems heavy with flowers and buds can bend after a storm or strong wind — a discreet bamboo stake is enough to keep the upright habit without altering the silhouette.
- Pinch the top early in the season: cut the tips of young shoots in spring when they reach 10 to 15 cm to encourage branching and get a denser, more flowering plant with more stems bearing buds.
- Be patient in early spring: Platycodon is one of the last perennials to restart after winter — don’t assume it’s dead if nothing appears in March, wait until late April or early May before worrying.
