Platycodon grandiflorus 'White' — also called Balloon flower or Large-flowered bellflower — charms with its swollen balloon-shaped flower buds that gradually open into large star-shaped pure white flowers. Native to East Asia, it is a very easy hardy perennial that naturally ranks among the easiest plants in the catalog.
Its flowering period stretches from June to September, attracting bees and butterflies. Compact and well-branched, the Balloon flower fits perfectly on a balcony, at the edge of a flowerbed, or in a pot on a terrace, and is among the plants to gift rich in symbolism: in Korea, its roots are eaten under the name doraji and the flower symbolizes eternal love and honesty.

Platycodon prefers a sunny to partial shade exposure: a location receiving 4 to 6 hours of direct sun per day is ideal for generous flowering. In warm climates, partial shade in the afternoon protects the foliage and extends the flower duration. It is a hardy perennial that tolerates temperatures down to -20 °C once established — so it can remain in the ground or on an unprotected balcony all year round.

Watering & care
The Balloon flower prefers fresh but never waterlogged soil: its taproot stores reserves and fears excess water that causes collar rot.
