🌿 Large glossy deep green leaves • 🌤️ Bright to partial shade light • 💧 Moderate watering • ✨ Easy care • 🏙️ 3 sizes available
The Ficus Elastica 'Robusta', also called the Rubber Plant, is an absolute classic of indoor plants — large, thick, glossy oval leaves in deep green, shiny like leather, supported by a trunk that gradually becomes woody. Its structured silhouette and shiny foliage make it a standout plant centerpiece capable of commanding any space.
Native to Southeast Asia and India, it belongs to the Ficus Elastica collection, where Robusta is the most understated and classic version — solid deep green, no variegation, for maximum plant presence without complexity. Available in three sizes, it is also one of the toughest in our selection of indestructible plants.
Which variety of Ficus Elastica should you choose?
The Ficus Elastica genus comes in several varieties with distinct colors. Here’s how the Robusta fits in:
- Ficus Elastica Robusta (this plant) — large, glossy, solid deep green leaves, slender woody trunk. The most classic and understated.
- Ficus Elastica Tineke — tricolor variegation of cream, green, and soft pink. The most refined.
- Ficus Elastica Belize — pink, cream, and green variegation, with vibrant pink tones. The most colorful.
- Ficus Elastica Abidjan — dark green foliage with a burgundy central vein. The most graphic in dark tones.
The Robusta is the only Ficus Elastica to offer solid deep green foliage without variegation — ideal if you want a strong, structured plant presence without color distractions.
Exposure & placement
The Ficus Elastica Robusta enjoys bright but filtered light and also tolerates partial shade — a rare tolerance for such a large, structured plant. However, it is sensitive to being moved: once placed, it’s best to leave it in its final spot. To understand how light affects your plants, refer to our analysis on the balance of light and humidity indoors.
- Ideal exposure: bright indirect light — east or west window, bright living room, modern office.
- Tolerates: partial shade, sheltered terrace or balcony in summer (min. 15 °C).
- Avoid: prolonged direct sunlight that burns leaves, cold drafts.
- Temperature: 18–26 °C, minimum 12 °C.
- Substrate: rich and well-draining — universal potting soil with perlite.
Each plant is unique: leaf shape and density naturally change with light and season.
Watering & care
The Ficus Elastica prefers to be slightly underwatered rather than overwatered — yellowing and leaf drop are almost always due to excess watering. Check with the finger test method: water only when the top 2 to 3 centimeters of soil are dry.
- Watering: moderate — let the top 2–3 cm dry out between waterings.
- Frequency: about once a week in spring and summer; every 2 to 3 weeks in winter.
- Water: non-calcareous, at room temperature.
- Drainage: essential — pot must have drainage holes, empty saucer after watering.
- Fertilizer: liquid fertilizer for green plants, every 4 to 6 weeks in spring and summer.
Each plant is unique: watering frequency naturally varies depending on pot size, ambient temperature, and season.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The deep, glossy green foliage of the Ficus Elastica Robusta acts as a strong plant backdrop in any arrangement — its chromatic simplicity enhances the more colorful plants around it. For more pairing ideas, check out our tips for integrating large plants into your interior.
- In a contrasting duo: pair it with a Calathea with complex patterns — the deep, glossy green of the Robusta highlights the graphic patterns of the Calathea without competing with them.
- As a centerpiece in the living room: the H85 cm size stands out alone in a corner — place it in a natural Selin basket whose blonde fiber creates a warm contrast with the deep green of the leaves.
- In combination with other Ficus Elastica: pair it with the Tineke to play on two extremes — the deep solid green of the Robusta against the cream and pink tricolor variegation of the Tineke.
- Decorative pot and color scheme: the deep glossy green stands out especially well against a Brussels anthracite decorative pot — a classic contrast that enhances the foliage’s shine and adds character to the silhouette.
Verdeia tips
- Choose its permanent location upon arrival: the Ficus Elastica is sensitive to moving — each change of place can cause temporary leaf drop that resolves within a few weeks if conditions remain stable.
- Regularly wipe the large leaves: the glossy, broad leaves collect dust that dulls their natural shine — a damp cloth every 3 to 4 weeks is enough to keep them bright.
- Turn the pot a quarter turn every month: the Ficus naturally grows toward the light — regular rotation ensures a balanced shape on all sides and prevents asymmetrical growth.
