The Ficus Elastica, commonly known as the rubber plant, is a timeless classic for interiors. Its large, thick, glossy, and leathery leaves give an impression of strength and elegance. Easy to care for, tolerant, and fast-growing, it transforms any room in just a few months.
Our varieties of Ficus Elastica
The Ficus Elastica Robusta is the classic variety: large, dark green oval leaves that are thick and shiny, on a straight and sturdy trunk. It is the most resilient and easiest to grow version. The Ficus Elastica Abidjan stands out with even darker foliage, almost burgundy-brown, with a reddish underside — a more dramatic and contemporary look. The Ficus Elastica Tineke is the star of trendy interiors: its leaves are variegated with green, cream, and pink, showing different shades with each new shoot. The Ficus Elastica Belize takes variegation even further with brighter touches of pink, cream, and more contrasting green — the most colorful of the family.
A fast-growing indoor tree
The Ficus Elastica grows fast — really fast. Under good conditions, it can gain 30 to 60 cm per year and reach 2 meters or more indoors. Each new leaf emerges from a bright red sheath before slowly unfolding, a spectacle to watch week after week. If you’re looking for a plant that quickly fills an empty space, the Robusta and Abidjan are ideal choices. You can also find them in our fast-growing plants collection and our large XXL plants collection.
Light requirements
The Ficus Elastica adapts to a wide range of light levels. The solid-colored varieties (Robusta, Abidjan) tolerate partial shade very well and remain attractive even several meters from a window. The variegated varieties (Tineke, Belize) need more light to maintain the brightness of their colors — place them in bright indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight for all varieties: it burns the leaves. Our article light and humidity: finding the right balance helps you find the best spot. Ficus Elastica care
Care is simple. Water when the top 2-3 centimeters of soil are dry — the Ficus Elastica prefers slight drying between waterings rather than constantly moist soil. Its large leaves collect dust: clean them regularly with a damp cloth so they can breathe and regain their shine. In winter, reduce watering and mist the foliage if the air is dry. Feeding every two weeks from spring to autumn supports growth. See our complete watering guide and our month-by-month care calendar.
Pruning and branching a Ficus Elastica
The Ficus Elastica naturally grows on a single vertical stem. To get a bushier, branched shape, prune the main stem in spring: the plant will produce several new shoots below the cut. Be careful, the white sap (latex) that flows from the cut is sticky and slightly irritating — wear gloves and protect the floor. Cuttings root easily in water or soil. Our complete propagation guide explains the technique.
The Ficus Elastica and air quality
The Ficus Elastica is known for its ability to filter formaldehyde, a volatile compound found in panel furniture, glues, and some paints. Its large leaves provide a significant filtration surface. Find our other purifying species in the air-purifying plants collection and read our article plants that purify the air.
Pairing the Ficus Elastica
The Ficus Elastica pairs very well with other plants with contrasting foliage. A dark green Robusta next to a variegated Tineke already creates a striking duo. Add a Strelitzia for exotic flair, a climbing Philodendron for movement, and a Calathea for patterns.
