💜 Lilac-pink flowers with a sweet fragrance • 🔄 Blooms twice a year • 🐝 Honey plant • 🐾 Non-toxic • ❄️ Very hardy • ☀️ Full sun to partial shade • 📏 H35 cm | Pot Ø19 cm
Syringa 'Violet Uprising' is an exceptional lilac: it blooms first in spring, then again in summer. This feature — called remontance — is rare among lilacs, which usually offer only one flowering period of a few weeks in May. With Violet Uprising, the sweet fragrance and soft lilac-pink panicles return until the end of summer, extending the season by several months.
Originating from East Asia, this pubescent lilac remains compact (1.5 to 2 m adult), making it one of the few lilacs truly suited for balconies and small gardens. Honey plant, very fragrant, hardy down to -25 °C, it naturally belongs among symbolic plants to give as gifts: lilac traditionally evokes first feelings and the return of spring.
Exposure & location
Violet Uprising blooms better when it receives sun: a warm and bright location is essential for generous flowering, especially for the summer remontance. It tolerates bright partial shade but blooms less there. Very hardy, it withstands temperatures down to -25 °C and survives winter without any protection, both in pot and in the ground.
- Exposure: full sun to bright partial shade — minimum 4 to 6 hours of direct sun per day.
- Location: balcony, terrace, small garden, flower bed, isolated on lawn — its compact habit allows it to adapt to small spaces.
- Temperature: very hardy down to -25 °C — no winter protection needed.
- Soil type: well-drained, rich in humus, neutral to slightly calcareous.
Lilac is a classic cut flower: its panicles last more than a week in a vase and perfume the whole room. Cut early in the morning when half the flowers are open for maximum vase life.
Watering & care
Lilac prefers a cool but well-drained soil. In the first year after planting, water regularly to encourage rooting, then gradually space out watering as the plant establishes: a well-rooted lilac becomes very self-sufficient. Welcoming a new plant properly determines the quality of the first season.
- Watering: regular during the first year after planting — then spaced out, only during prolonged drought.
- Drainage: essential — empty the saucer after watering, lilac dislikes waterlogged soil.
- Fertilizer: add compost or fertilizer for flowering shrubs in early spring, just before flowering.
- Pruning: prune just after the first flowering to trigger the summer remontance — this is the key action for this variety.
- Repotting: every 3 to 4 years in a container, in autumn or early spring.
Pruning after the first flowering is the only secret to the summer remontance: without this, Violet Uprising blooms like a classic lilac with a single wave in spring — you would lose its main advantage.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The soft lilac-pink of Violet Uprising and its sweet fragrance make it a star of romantic balconies or gardens, to pair with other fragrant shrubs or plants that extend the decorative effect once the first flowering is over. A gift plant that accompanies its recipient for a long time.
- For a balcony scented throughout the season, pair it with a Lavender Hidcote Blue with dark violet spikes and a Vanilla climbing rose — three complementary fragrance sources (sweet, camphor, soft) that alternate from May to September.
- For a structured border dominated by pink-white, surround it with a Strong Annabelle Hydrangea with large white balls that take over in June-August, and a Blue Fescue Azura whose silvery clumps remain decorative even out of bloom.
- For a spring full of pink variegation, combine it with a Lady Campbell Camellia with crumpled pink flowers and a Bollywood Rhododendron pink variegated — three spring bloomers overlapping to create a spectacular balcony corner from April to June.
- To highlight the silhouette in a pot, place the lilac in a Capi Nature Skin anthracite pot with a matte finish that brings out the pink of the flowers, or in a Elho Greenville Round white pot for a lighter, brighter look.
Lilac attracts bees, butterflies, and bumblebees: it is one of the best shrubs to turn a balcony into a mini urban biodiversity reservoir, especially during the summer remontance when other honey plants become scarce.
Verdeia Tips
- Prune just after the first flowering: the summer remontance depends entirely on this pruning — remove faded panicles and shorten branches by one third at the end of spring. Without this, you lose the double flowering that makes this variety valuable.
- Be patient the first year: like all lilacs, Violet Uprising takes a season to establish before offering full flowering — the first year may be discreet, the second season rewards generously.
- Choose a large pot from the start: in a container, opt for one at least 30 cm deep and wide — double flowering requires reserves and the root system needs space to support the two annual waves.
