The Fatsia japonica 'Variegata', also called Variegated Japanese Aralia, is a striking graphic plant native to the humid forests of Japan and South Korea, where it develops its large palm-shaped evergreen leaves. Its green and cream variegated variety brightens shaded spaces with rare elegance — a sculptural foliage that creates an immediate focal point, both indoors and in sheltered outdoor areas.

Which Fatsia variety to choose?
The Fatsia genus offers two varieties with spectacular foliage:
- Fatsia japonica 'Variegata' (this plant) — large palm-shaped leaves variegated green and cream, bright edges. The elegant and luminous version.
- Fatsia japonica 'Spider Web' — white spider web marbling on a dark green background, a unique graphic effect. The spectacular and contrasting version.
Why choose the Variegata? Its cream-variegated foliage brightens dark corners better than any other variety — ideal for shaded balconies or low-light interiors lacking natural light.
Exposure & location
The Fatsia japonica 'Variegata' is one of the few graphic plants that truly thrives in the shade. The variegated foliage is more delicate than green — absolutely avoid direct sunlight which burns the cream areas.
- Exposure: partial shade to shade, soft indirect light.
- Ideal for: shaded balcony, sheltered terrace, entrance, or low-light interior.
- Temperature: 5 to 25 °C — hardy down to -5 °C in a sheltered outdoor spot.
- Substrate: rich, fresh, and well-drained — universal potting soil enriched with compost.
Indoors, keep it away from radiators and drafts — it prefers coolness to dry heat.
Watering & care
Fatsia prefers a consistently fresh substrate — the finger test will help you avoid over- or under-watering.
- Watering: regular — keep the substrate fresh and slightly moist without soaking.
- Frequency: 2 to 3 times a week in spring-summer, reduced in winter.
- Drainage: essential — use a pot with drainage holes and well-draining substrate.

Verdeia Tips
- Protect the variegated foliage from direct sun — the cream areas are more sensitive to burns than the green. A shading veil is enough in summer if the plant is outdoors exposed. Unlike green Fatsia which tolerates some morning sun, Variegata requires more precautions.
- In winter, bring it indoors if temperatures drop below -5 °C — Fatsia is hardy but the variegation makes it slightly more sensitive to frost than the green variety. A sheltered spot under a veranda or near a wall is usually enough. Check our winter guide to prepare your plants.
- Repot every 2 to 3 years in spring — in a slightly larger pot with fresh substrate. Growth is moderate — do not oversize the pot, as this would encourage root rot.
- Are the leaves yellowing at the base? This is normal and natural — Fatsia renews its foliage gradually. Simply remove the yellowed leaves at the base to keep a clean and airy shape.

What to do upon receiving my plant?
Open your package as soon as you receive it and carefully remove the plant from its packaging. Let it acclimate for 24 hours in its new environment before watering. If it has been slightly stressed during transport, it will recover its shape after one or two days in the light.
What to do if my plant arrives damaged?
Contact us within 48 hours with a photo of the issue. Our team will assess the situation and offer you the best solution: replacement, partial refund, or recovery advice.
Can I return a plant?
Since plants are living beings, standard returns are not possible. However, we guarantee good health upon delivery: if the plant arrives damaged, it will be replaced free of charge. For any other cases (order error, decorative pot, accessory), returns are possible within 14 days.
