Frequently Asked Questions
Where should you plant a Christmas rose? In partial shade, in cool, well-draining soil, ideally near an entrance or window to enjoy its winter blooms.
Why is it called a Christmas rose? Because Helleborus niger opens its white flowers in the middle of winter, around Christmas, when almost nothing else is blooming in the garden.

❄️ Flowers in the middle of winter, from late October • 🤍 Large white flowers with a yellow heart • 🌿 Dark green evergreen foliage • ⛅ Partial shade • 🧊 Hardy down to -29 °C • 🪴 Two sizes
Helleborus niger 'Christmas Carol' is a Christmas rose, this mountain perennial from Europe that opens its flowers in the middle of winter. European horticultural selection, it is one of the few flowering plants in the catalogue to offer flowers between November and March, when the rest of the garden is dormant.
'Christmas Carol' stands out for its earliness: it often begins flowering as early as late October, well before Christmas, with large 4 to 5 cm white flowers around a heart of yellow stamens. Each flower remains decorative for six to eight weeks, developing green or pinkish highlights as it ages.
Which hellebore should you choose?
Nine hellebores in the catalogue, taking turns throughout winter:
- Christmas Rose 'Christmas Carol' (this plant) — single pure-white flowers, from late October to March. The earliest.
- Christmas Rose 'Diamonfire' — single cream-white and green flowers with dusty pink highlights, from December to March. The most vigorous, in clusters on red stems.
- Hellebore 'Angel Glow' — single frosted-pink flowers that turn deep pink and green, from December to March. The flowers with the most changing hues.
- Lenten Rose 'Dacaya' — single medium-pink flowers streaked with burgundy, from February to April. The most flowering, supplied as a large clump.
- Lenten Rose 'Double Ellen Pink' — double pale pink flowers speckled with purple, from February to April. The most nuanced.
- Lenten Rose 'Double Ellen White' — double snow-white flowers, from February to April. The brightest in shade.
- Lenten Rose 'Double Ellen Red' — double burgundy-purple flowers, from February to April. The most intense.
- Majorcan Hellebore 'Purple Marble' — single cream-green flowers washed with purple, from January to April. Blue-green foliage marbled with cream.
- 'Silver Dollar' silvery hellebore — single cream-green flowers with a yellow center, from February to April. The most silvery foliage.
Christmas and Lenten roses, like Angel Glow, withstand intense cold; hellebores with mottled or silvery foliage are best chosen for a sheltered balcony.
Exposure & location
The Christmas rose is a woodland-edge plant: in the shade of a tree in summer, in the sun in winter when the leaves have fallen. 'Christmas Carol' flowers even better when it receives half a day of direct light.
- Exposure: partial shade, winter sun welcome, never scorching summer sun.
- Location: near an entrance, under a window, along the edge of a terrace, where it can be seen from the house.
- Hardiness in a pot: down to -29 °C — it flowers even under snow.
- Soil type: moist, rich in humus and well-drained, preferably alkaline.
The flowers bend toward the ground: in a raised pot or on a step, they are much easier to see than at ground level in the garden.
Watering & care
Hellebores like moist soil but hate stagnant water: in a pot, a well-draining substrate is essential, and yellowing leaves most often indicate overwatering.
- Watering: moderate — the substrate should remain moist but not waterlogged; water a little more during dry periods.
- Water: tap water is suitable.
- Fertilizer: apply organic fertilizer in autumn, before flowering.
- Pruning: cut damaged old leaves at the base in late autumn to reveal the flower buds.
- Repotting: rarely — hellebores do not like being disturbed; in the ground, plant it once and for all.
Wear gloves when handling the plant: its sap can irritate the skin.
Decorating ideas & plant combinations
In winter, a terrace often comes down to evergreens: the Christmas rose provides the only flowering touch, even on a balcony with little sun.
- For a winter arrangement, plant it at the foot of a 'Eve Price' laurustinus — its bright pink buds and pale pink flowers from November to March frame the white Christmas rose at two heights.
- For a contrast of textures, pair it with Carex 'Ice Dance' — fine, evergreen foliage edged in cream that remains beautiful throughout winter.
- For a structured entrance, place it in front of a BetterBuxus® ball — the green mass of the boxwood highlights the white flowers.
- To enhance the pot, choose the Capi Nature Skin anthracite pot — the dark grey makes the white flowers stand out and withstands frost.
Cut and placed in a bowl of water, hellebore flowers make a Christmas table centrepiece that lasts for several days.
Verdeia tips
- Leave it outdoors: the Christmas rose needs cold weather to flower. Brought indoors into the warmth, it wilts within a few days. It can be kept indoors for a maximum of one week, in a cool room, for a celebration.
- Clean the foliage in November: removing old, spotted leaves exposes the buds and helps prevent foliage diseases.
- Give it as a Christmas gift: more long-lasting than a bouquet, it flowers again every winter for years. Our selection of gift plants helps you choose according to the occasion.
