🩶 Silvery gray foliage with toothed edges • 🌼 Cream-green flowers with a lemon-yellow center • 📅 Flowering from February to April • ⛅ Partial shade, tolerates gentle sun • ❄️ Hardy down to -10 °C • 🪴 Compact habit, ideal in a pot
Helleborus × sternii 'Silver Dollar' is primarily grown for its foliage: leathery leaves in three toothed lobes, a silvery gray that stays bright all year round. A hybrid of two Mediterranean hellebores from Corsica and Majorca, it brings a rare silvery tone to outdoor plants among evergreen perennials.
Its purple-tinged stems bear, from February to April, clusters of cup-shaped cream-green flowers with a center filled with lemon-yellow stamens. The clump stays compact, around 35 to 40 cm tall and wide.
Which hellebore should you choose?
Nine hellebores in the catalogue, taking turns throughout the winter:
- Silver hellebore 'Silver Dollar' (this plant) — single cream-green flowers with a yellow center, from February to April. The most silvery foliage.
- Christmas rose 'Christmas Carol' — single pure white flowers, from late October to March. The earliest.
- Christmas rose 'Diamonfire' — single cream-white and green flowers with dusty pink highlights, from December to March. The most vigorous, in clusters on red stems.
- 'Angel Glow' hellebore — single frosted pink flowers that turn deep pink and green, from December to March. The flowers with the most changing hues.
- Lenten rose 'Dacaya' — single medium pink flowers streaked with burgundy, from February to April. The most flowering, delivered as a large clump.
- Lenten rose 'Double Ellen Pink' — double pale pink flowers speckled with purple, from February to April. The most nuanced.
- Lenten rose 'Double Ellen White' — double snow-white flowers, from February to April. The brightest in the shade.
- Lenten rose 'Double Ellen Red' — double burgundy-purple flowers, from February to April. The most intense.
- Majorcan Hellebore 'Purple Marble' — single cream-green flowers washed with purple, from January to April. Blue-green foliage marbled with cream.
Christmas roses and Lenten roses, such as Angel Glow, withstand intense cold; hellebores with marbled or silvery foliage are best chosen for a sheltered balcony.
Exposure & location
Descended from the hellebores of Corsica and Majorca, which grow on rocky slopes, it tolerates more light than Lenten roses but dislikes waterlogged winters and cold winds.
- Exposure: partial shade or gentle sun, protected from the scorching afternoon sun in summer.
- Location: covered balcony, east- or west-facing terrace, sheltered base of a wall protected from the wind.
- Hardiness in a pot: down to -10 °C — below that, bring it indoors to a bright, unheated room.
- Soil type: fertile, fresh but well drained, neutral to alkaline.
The more light it receives, the more silvery its foliage becomes; in full shade, it turns gray-green.
Watering & care
In a pot, it likes a fresh substrate that never stays waterlogged: a well-draining mix based on perlite or clay pebbles protects it from rot, while leaf tips that turn brown in summer indicate that the substrate has remained too dry.
- Watering: moderate — when the first few centimeters of the substrate are dry in spring and summer, greatly reduced in winter.
- Water: tap water is suitable.
- Fertilizer: apply organic fertilizer in autumn.
- Pruning: cut flowering stems at the base at the end of spring — new leafy stems will take over.
- Repotting: the following spring, in a pot only slightly wider, with a drainage layer at the bottom.
Wear gloves when pruning: hellebore sap can irritate the skin.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
Its silvery gray brightens lightly shaded corners and softens dark greens, on a balcony with little sun as well as along the edge of a terrace.
- For foliage contrast, pair it with a Korean Fern — its dark, glossy green makes the silver of the leaves stand out.
- For pink blooms in late winter, place a Laurier-tin 'Eve Price' beside it — its bright pink buds stand out against the silvery gray, at shrub height.
- To dress the edge of the pot, plant a Carex 'Ice Dance' — its fine cream-edged leaves contrast with the broad, toothed leaves.
- To enhance the pot, choose the Capi Nature Groove taupe pot — its warm tone warms up the silvery gray without dulling it.
A leafy stem lasts more than a week in a vase and brings a silvery touch to a winter bouquet.
Verdeia tips
- Protect it below -10 °C: in a pot, the roots freeze faster than in the ground. Bring it indoors for a few days to a garage or an unheated conservatory during cold spells. If some leaves turn black after a frost, our guide on saving a frost-damaged plant explains what to cut.
- Shelter it from winter rain: waterlogged soil in cold weather causes the crown to rot. Under a roof overhang, it will get through winter without any problems.
- Do not cut back the foliage in winter: unlike the Lenten rose, its silvery leaves remain beautiful during flowering and provide all the decoration.
