Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my Blue Fescue losing its blue color? The blue fades mainly due to lack of light — Festuca glauca needs full sun to develop its characteristic metallic blue. In partial shade, the foliage turns a more subdued blue-green. Move it to a sunnier spot and perform the spring pruning to encourage new, well-colored leaves.
How to divide a Festuca clump? Divide in spring, when growth resumes. Remove the clump from the pot or dig it up, then separate it into several sections by hand or with two forks back to back. Immediately replant each section in fresh, well-drained soil and water regularly during the first few weeks.

🔵 Unique silvery blue foliage • 🌾 Graphic spiky clump • ☀️ Full sun • 💧 Low watering • ❄️ Very hardy and evergreen • 🐾 Non-toxic
Festuca glauca 'Azura Blue', or Blue Fescue, is an outdoor grass native to southern Europe with intensely silvery blue evergreen foliage — its fine, stiff leaves form a graphic spiky clump that captures and reflects light at all times of day. Very hardy and easy to care for, decorative in all seasons.
Non-toxic to animals. Discover it in our selection of plants for balconies and terraces.
Which grasses to pair?
Festuca glauca pairs especially well with other grasses and plants with contrasting foliage:
- Festuca glauca 'Azura Blue' (this plant) — intense silvery blue, compact. The most graphic and colorful.
- Carex morrowii 'Ice Dance' — variegated green and cream foliage, more spreading habit. The brightest.
- Carex morrowii 'Irish Green' — shiny green, dense, and evergreen foliage. The most understated.
- Phormium 'Rubra Nana' — coppery red ribbon-like foliage, fan-shaped growth. The perfect warm-cool contrast with blue Festuca.
The combination of blue Festuca + red Phormium is one of the most effective for color contrast — the cool blue and warm red enhance each other. Find more ideas in our outdoor plant collection.
Exposure & location
- Ideal exposure: full sun — its blue foliage is more intense in bright light.
- Tolerates: light partial shade, wind, drought.
- Avoid: overly dense shade that dulls colors, waterlogged soil.
- Hardiness: Very hardy — withstands harsh winters without protection.
- Foliage: evergreen — decorative all year round.
- Substrate: well-drained — universal potting soil with sand or perlite.
The more sun it gets, the more intense and metallic its blue becomes. In partial shade, the tones tend toward a more subdued blue-green. Check our light and humidity guide to choose the right spot.
Watering & maintenance
- Watering: low — very drought tolerant once established.
- Frequency: water during the first weeks after planting, then gradually reduce.
- Avoid: excess water and stagnation — its main risk is root rot in waterlogged soil.
- Pruning: in spring, cut the clump by one-third of its height to encourage fresh leaf growth and maintain a compact shape.
- Fertilizer: little or none needed — a light application in spring is enough.
Spring pruning is the only truly important step — without it, the inner leaves gradually yellow and the clump loses its compactness. Check our maintenance calendar to not miss this key step.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
Its unique blue color makes it a strong chromatic accent in any outdoor plant arrangement.
- As a solo clump: in a concrete or anthracite gray pot, its silvery blue creates a striking contrast — a minimalist and graphic plant sculpture.
- In arrangement: pair it with a Phormium Rubra Nana for a striking blue-red duo, or with white or pink flowering plants for a soft contrast.
- Ideal pot: concrete, anthracite gray, or matte white — neutral and cool tones highlight the metallic blue without competing with it.
In the low light of morning or evening, its fine leaves create a bright silvery blue halo — a very decorative visual effect that changes with the time of day.
Verdeia tips
- Prune in spring — this is the only truly essential step. Cut the clump down by one-third in March-April to stimulate fresh, blue leaf regrowth. Without pruning, the center of the clump gradually thins out.
- Divide every 3-4 years — Festuca tends to thin out in the center over time. Divide the clump in spring and replant the divisions to rejuvenate the plant. See our propagation guide for proper steps.
- Avoid overwatering — once established, it easily survives without regular watering. Excess water is its main risk.
- 🐾 Non-toxic — Festuca glauca is completely safe for dogs and cats.
