Frequently Asked Questions
Can Aglaomorpha be grown hanging? Yes, it is actually an ideal way to grow this epiphytic fern — its rhizomes can spread freely outside the pot and its fronds naturally hang down. Use a hanging basket with very well-draining substrate and mist more often because hanging arrangements dry out faster.
Why are the tips of my Aglaomorpha’s fronds turning brown? It’s almost always due to low ambient humidity — increase misting frequency or move the plant to a more humid room like the bathroom. Watering with very hard water can also cause this symptom.

🌿 Deeply lobed bright green fronds • 🎨 Spectacular creeping golden rhizomes • ☀️ Partial shade • 💧 Moderate watering • 🌬️ Air-purifying • 🐾 Non-toxic
The Aglaomorpha coronans, also known as the Epiphytic fern, is a spectacular tropical fern native to the humid tropical forests of Southeast Asia, where it naturally grows on tree trunks in shaded undergrowth. Its deeply lobed bright green fronds create a lush, sculptural effect - but it is above all its creeping rhizomes covered in golden scales that make it unique: a tactile and visual dimension that few indoor plants offer.
Air-purifying, non-toxic, available in two sizes: H45 cm | Pot Ø17 cm and H60 cm | Pot Ø23 cm. Pair it with indoor ferns and plants for the bathroom.
Light & placement
The Aglaomorpha coronans thrives in partial shade with soft indirect light - it tolerates low light, but its fronds develop best with a few hours of bright indirect light per day. Its ideal placement depends on the balance between light and humidity.
- Light: partial shade, soft indirect light - tolerates low light, avoid direct sun.
- Ideal: bathroom, living room, office or bright room without direct sun.
- Temperature: 18 to 25 °C, without sudden changes or drafts.
- Substrate: light, very airy and well-drained - potting mix for ferns or orchids with bark and perlite.
As an epiphytic plant, the Aglaomorpha thrives in a very airy substrate that mimics its natural habitat on tree trunks - avoid compact potting mixes that retain too much water.
Watering & care
The Aglaomorpha likes slightly moist soil that is never waterlogged. The finger test is particularly useful here: wait until the first few centimetres of the substrate are dry before watering again.
- Watering: moderate - let the substrate dry slightly on the surface between waterings.
- Frequency: about once a week in spring and summer, reduced in winter.
- Drainage: essential - use a pot with drainage holes and a very well-draining substrate.
- Humidity: enjoys 60 to 80% humidity - mist regularly or place near a humidifier.
- Fertiliser: once a month in spring and summer with liquid fertiliser for green plants, diluted to half strength.
The creeping rhizomes are normal and part of this fern's charm - never bury them; leave them visible on the surface of the substrate.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
Its deeply lobed fronds and golden rhizomes make it an accent plant that fascinates as much with its texture as with its silhouette - a fern that invites you to touch it as much as to admire it.
- Pairing: pair it with an Asplenium nidus to contrast smooth and deeply lobed fronds, or with a Microsorum diversifolium - two epiphytic ferns with complementary textures that share the same needs. Pair with other air-purifying plants to create a clean-air corner.
- Ideal pot: a white ceramic decorative pot with a textured finish highlights the bright green fronds without competing with the texture of the golden rhizomes.
- Atmosphere: perfect as a statement plant in a living room or bright bathroom, or in a hanging planter to let the fronds cascade naturally.
The creeping golden rhizomes extending over the edge of the pot are part of the spectacle - a unique detail that sets this fern apart from all the others.
Verdeia tips
- Never touch the rhizomes - these creeping golden stems are the plant's water-storage organs. Do not bury or cut them. If they grow out of the pot, let them hang freely - this is their natural epiphytic behaviour.
- High humidity, always - below 50% humidity, the edges of the fronds begin to turn brown. Mist the foliage several times a week or place the pot on a saucer of damp clay pebbles. The bathroom remains the ideal location.
- Epiphytic substrate, not universal potting mix - use a mix of potting soil + orchid bark + perlite to recreate the conditions of a tree trunk. A substrate that is too compact retains too much water and causes the rhizomes to rot.
- Repot every 2 to 3 years in spring - into a pot that is slightly wider rather than deeper, to give the rhizomes room to spread. After repotting, keep watering light for a few weeks.
