Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Begonia maculata Wightii easy to propagate? Yes — take a stem with 2 to 3 leaves in spring and place it in a glass of water or moist soil; roots usually appear within 2 to 3 weeks.
Why are the leaves of my Begonia maculata losing their silver spots? Lack of light is the main cause — move it closer to a well-lit window without direct sunlight, and new leaves will regain their silver contrast.

🌤️ Indirect light • 🌿 Unique silver-spotted foliage • 💧 Moderate watering • 📏 H20 cm | Pot Ø12 cm
The Begonia maculata 'Wightii', also known as the Spotted Begonia, is an icon of plant-filled interiors — its large dark green leaves dotted with silver spots and deep red undersides offer a spectacular contrast found nowhere else. Native to the tropical forests of Brazil, it instantly adds an artistic touch to a shelf or bright desk. Discover our full Begonia collection and our collector plants.
Its asymmetrical silhouette and speckled foliage make it a plant with character — check out our guide to combining plants in a tropical setting to create an arrangement that does it justice.
Exposure & Location
Begonia maculata enjoys bright but filtered light — direct sun quickly burns its delicate leaves and dulls the silver spots.
- Exposure: bright indirect light — east or north-facing windowsill ideal.
- Ideal for: living room, bedroom, office, or reading nook.
- Temperature: 18 to 25 °C, no drafts.
- Substrate: light, draining, and rich — potting soil for green plants mixed with perlite.
Watering & Care
- Watering: moderate — allow the substrate to dry 2 to 3 cm between waterings.
- Humidity: prefers a slightly humid atmosphere — group plants together or place the pot on moist clay pebbles. Avoid spraying directly on the leaves to prevent marking the silver spots.
- Drainage: essential — pot with drainage holes, draining substrate.
- Fertilizer: in spring and summer, every 4 weeks, use a mild fertilizer for green plants.
- Pruning: pinch back overly long stems in spring and remove yellowed leaves to encourage new growth.
Decor Ideas & Plant Pairings
Its speckled foliage creates a strong visual dynamic — it works especially well paired with plants with uniform foliage that leave full attention to its silver spots.
- Pair with: a Calathea makoyana with translucent leaves — the complex patterns of both species complement each other without competing, creating a very graphic tropical composition.
- Contrasting duo: pair it with a Pilea peperomioides with round, smooth leaves — the asymmetrical silhouette of the Begonia and the airy habit of the Pilea create an immediate balance.
- Decorative pot: a matte white or gray ceramic enhances the contrast between the silver spots and the red underside without competing.
Verdeia Tips
- Do not spray the leaves: water droplets on spotted leaves leave marks and can promote fungal diseases — moisten the ambient air rather than the foliage directly.
- Rotate the pot regularly: for even growth and dense foliage on both sides — monthly rotation is enough.
- Begonia maculata is easy to propagate: take a stem with 2 to 3 leaves and place it in water or moist substrate — our propagation guide explains the technique step by step.

Will the plant look exactly like the photo?
The photos accurately represent the variety and the stated size. Since each plant is unique, slight differences in shape, foliage, or color may occur — and that’s part of their charm.
What are the delivery times and conditions?
Shipping is done within 48 business hours, with tracked delivery within 2 to 5 business days. Delivery costs €5.60 — free for orders over €50. You will receive a tracking link as soon as the package is shipped.
What to do upon receiving my plant?
Open your package as soon as you receive it and carefully remove the plant from its packaging. Let it acclimate for 24 hours in its new environment before watering. If it has been slightly stressed during transport, it will recover its shape after one or two days in the light.
What to do if my plant arrives damaged?
Contact us within 48 hours with a photo of the issue. Our team will assess the situation and offer you the best solution: replacement, partial refund, or recovery advice.
Can I return a plant?
