Frequently Asked Questions
How to easily propagate a Callisia repens? Callisia is one of the easiest plants to propagate. Cut a 5 to 8 cm stem, remove the lower leaves, and place it in a glass of water or directly in moist soil. Roots appear in just a few days. Plant several cuttings directly into the mother plant’s pot to thicken it.
What is the difference between Callisia repens Rosato and Callisia Turtle? Both are Callisia repens with small, round, fleshy leaves and a compact trailing habit. The main difference is the color — Rosato has a soft pink and light green bicolor whose intensity varies with light, while Turtle has dark green foliage with a pattern reminiscent of a turtle shell. Rosato is the colorful, pastel version; Turtle is the graphic, dark version.

🌸 Small round leaves in powder pink and soft green • 🪴 Graceful trailing habit • ☀️ Bright indirect light • 💧 Moderate watering • 🌱 Easy care • ⚠️ Slightly toxic if ingested • 📏 H16 cm | Pot Ø12 cm
Callisia repens 'Rosato', also known as Pink Turtle Plant, is a trailing tropical plant native to South America. Its small, round, fleshy leaves feature a bicolor of powder pink and soft green that intensifies with light — the more bright indirect light the plant receives, the more pronounced the pink and purple hues become. Its dense and graceful trailing habit makes it ideal for hanging baskets and shelves.
Discover it in our trailing plants collection and in our shelf selection.
Exposure & Location
Callisia Rosato needs bright indirect light to maintain its characteristic pink shades — this is its main requirement.
- Exposure: bright indirect light to bright partial shade — avoid direct sun which can burn the leaves.
- Ideal: hanging near an east or west-facing window, bright shelf, windowsill with a sheer curtain.
- Temperature: 18 to 25 °C, without sudden changes.
- Substrate: light, airy, and well-draining — universal potting soil with perlite.
The brighter the light (without direct sun), the more intense the pink and purple reflections on the foliage. In low light, the leaves tend to turn green and lose their pink character.
Watering & Care
Callisia is easy to care for — it tolerates occasional missed waterings well and clearly signals its needs. Check out our watering guide to find the right rhythm.
- Watering: moderate — let the substrate surface dry out between waterings.
- Frequency: about once a week in spring-summer, reduced to once every two weeks in winter.
- Humidity: prefers 50 to 60% — tolerates dry air better than most tropical plants.
- Fertilizer: every 4 to 6 weeks in spring-summer with diluted liquid fertilizer for green plants.
- Pruning: cut back overly long stems to thicken the plant — cuttings root very easily.
Leaves that soften slightly indicate a need for water — water as soon as you see this sign. The plant recovers very quickly after rehydration.
Decor Ideas & Plant Pairings
Its small round pink and green leaves and dense trailing habit create a poetic cascading effect — a plant that brings softness and lightness to a plant arrangement.
- In combination: pair it with a Tradescantia Sweetness or a Callisia Turtle for a compact trailing plant composition with contrasting foliage — same family, same needs.
- Hanging: its trailing habit is enhanced when hung high — pair it with a Scindapsus Pictus for a hanging composition with contrasting foliage.
- Ideal pot: decorative pot in light or pastel ceramic (white, powder pink, beige) — soft tones naturally complement the pink and green bicolor foliage.
Verdeia Tips
- Pinch and propagate — to keep a dense and bushy Callisia, regularly pinch the stem tips. Cuttings root very easily in water or directly in moist substrate within a few days. Plant them directly in the pot to thicken it. Our propagation guide walks you through the steps.
- Light determines color — pink and purple shades intensify with light and fade in shade. If the pink gradually disappears, move the plant to a brighter spot — new shoots will regain their characteristic bicolor in a few weeks.
- Slightly toxic if ingested — Callisia is slightly irritating to the skin and slightly toxic if ingested by cats and dogs. Keep it out of reach of pets.
