Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my Callisia losing its cream variegation? A spot that’s too dark is almost always the cause — in low light, new leaves will grow completely green. Move the plant to a brighter place without direct sunlight, and the variegation will gradually return on new shoots.
Is Callisia repens safe for cats? Yes, Callisia repens is non-toxic to cats and dogs — you can place it worry-free in a home with pets. This is a rare advantage for such a decorative trailing plant.

🌿 Green and cream variegated foliage • 🎨 Elegant trailing habit • ☀️ Partial shade • 💧 Moderate watering • 📏 H17 cm | Ø12 cm • 🐾 Non-toxic
The Callisia repens is a compact and graphic trailing plant native to the tropical regions of Central and South America, where it naturally grows as ground cover in moist understories. Its small oval leaves variegated in green and cream spread along creeping stems that trail gracefully — a bright cascading effect that intensifies with the plant’s rapid growth.
Non-toxic, easy to care for, and especially generous with cuttings. Discover it in our selection of trailing plants and in our collection of non-toxic plants.
Which Callisia variety to choose?
The Callisia genus offers three varieties with distinct colors and habits:
- Callisia repens (this plant) — green and cream variegated foliage, elegant trailing habit. The bright and classic version.
- Callisia repens 'Rosato' — spectacular pink and green foliage, colorful trailing habit. The vibrant and original pink version.
- Callisia 'Turtle' — dense dark green round leaves, bushy and compact habit. The green and architectural version.
Why choose Callisia repens? Its green and cream variegation brings brightness and contrasts beautifully with plants that have dark green foliage. Perfect to break the monotony of an all-green arrangement.
Exposure & placement
The Callisia repens prefers partial shade with bright indirect light — the brighter the spot (without direct sun), the more vibrant the cream variegation will be.
- Exposure: Partial shade, bright indirect light — avoid direct sun that burns the small leaves.
- Ideal: hanging near a window, high shelf, desk, or bright bathroom.
- Temperature: 18 to 25 °C, without sudden changes or drafts.
- Substrate: light, rich, and well-draining — universal potting soil with perlite.
In a spot that’s too dark, new leaves will grow greener and less variegated — a sign to move the plant to more light.
Watering & care
Callisia prefers a slightly dry substrate over a constantly wet one. The finger test is enough to avoid overwatering.
- Watering: moderate — let the substrate dry out on the surface between waterings.
- Frequency: 1 to 2 times per week in spring-summer, reduced in winter.
- Drainage: essential — use a pot with drainage holes and well-draining substrate.
- Humidity: prefers 50 to 60% humidity — mist occasionally or place near other plants.
- Fertilizer: once a month in spring-summer with a diluted liquid fertilizer for green plants.
- Size: pinch the tips to encourage branching and a bushier habit.
Fast growth — stems can reach 30 to 40 cm in length within a few months, creating a spectacular cascading effect from a high shelf.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
Its trailing habit and fast growth make it an ideal plant to dress vertical spaces — shelves, hangings, windowsills.
- In combination: pair it with a Silver Scindapsus or a trailing shelf plant to play with textures and variegations.
- Ideal pot: a Elho Vibes pink decorative pot Ø14 cm suspended or placed high — the soft pink elegantly contrasts with the green and cream variegation.
- Ambiance: perfect hanging near a window or on a high shelf to let the stems fall freely — find more ideas in our trailing plants guide.
Cream variegation adds brightness and creates an elegant contrast with dark green foliage plants in a hanging arrangement.
Verdeia tips
- Propagate easily to multiply the plant — cut a 5 to 10 cm stem just below a node and place it in a glass of water or directly into moist substrate. Rooting is fast — usually within 2 weeks. Our propagation guide details all the steps.
- Pinch the tips regularly — without pruning, Callisia grows long and leggy. Pinching just above a node every 3 to 4 weeks produces a denser, bushier plant with a generous cascading effect.
- Variegation intensifies with light — in low light, new leaves grow greener. Move the plant closer to a natural light source to restore bright cream variegation.
- Repot every 1 to 2 years in spring — fast growth quickly depletes the substrate. Annual repotting into a slightly larger pot with fresh substrate maintains vigor and foliage beauty.
