🤍 Pure white flowers in umbels • 🌸 Long flowering from June to October • ☀️ Full sun • 🌡️ Hardy down to -7 °C • 💧 Moderate watering • 🏡 Balcony, terrace, garden • 📏 H30 cm | Pot Ø19 cm
Agapanthus 'Ever White', also called compact white agapanthus, displays immaculate umbels from June to October borne on short stems above a clump of slender green leaves. Native to South Africa and the result of a Dutch horticultural selection for its remarkable traits, this variety ranks among the most floriferous balcony and terrace plants in the catalog.
Its special feature in the 'Ever' series: a flowering period spread over nearly five months—two to three times longer than a classic Agapanthus—and a compact height of only 30 cm, making it perfect for pots, borders, or graphic mass planting.
Exposure & Location
Agapanthus 'Ever White' requires full sun to bloom abundantly. Too much shade significantly reduces the number of flower stalks and stretches the foliage. It is a sunny balcony and terrace plant, perfectly suited to Mediterranean and temperate climates.
- Exposure: full sun—at least 6 hours of direct sun per day for generous flowering.
- Location: balcony, sunny terrace, border, in a pot near an entrance door or outdoor dining area.
- Hardiness: hardy down to -7 °C in mulched ground—in pots, overwinter in a cool, bright place in colder climates.
- Soil type: well-draining and fertile—potting soil for flowering plants mixed with river sand or pumice, neutral to slightly acidic pH.
Place the pot against a south-facing wall—the heat stored by the stone extends flowering into the late season and provides valuable winter protection.
Watering & Care
Agapanthus appreciates regular watering in spring and summer to support continuous flowering but dislikes excess moisture that causes the fleshy rhizomes to rot. To adjust frequency, test the substrate moisture with your finger before each watering.
- Watering: 2 to 3 times per week during the growing season, as soon as the top few centimeters of substrate dry out—greatly reduce in winter, almost dry.
- Drainage: essential—choose a pot with drainage holes and place a layer of clay pebbles at the bottom to prevent water stagnation.
- Fertilizer: liquid fertilizer for flowering plants, rich in potassium, every two weeks from May to September to support extended flowering.
- Pruning: cut faded flower stalks at the base of the clump to encourage new blooms—remove yellowed leaves at the end of the season.
- Repotting: only every 3 to 4 years; Agapanthus flowers better when slightly root-bound in its pot.
In winter, space watering to once a month maximum and protect the pot from prolonged frost under a winter cover or in an unheated greenhouse.
Decor Ideas & Plant Combinations
With its pure white umbels and compact habit, Agapanthus 'Ever White' brings a bright, summery note to balconies or terraces. To create an easy-to-maintain urban corner, it pairs well with many Mediterranean plants.
- For a contrasting Agapanthus trio, combine it with Agapanthus 'Poppin Purple' with intense purple violet and Agapanthus 'Fireworks' bicolor blue and white—three complementary flowering shades that harmonize without competing.
- For a bright Mediterranean scene, place the Agapanthus at the base of a standard olive tree and surround it with true lavender—the white umbels stand out against the blue-gray foliage and violet spikes.
- To highlight white flowers in a terracotta pot, choose a Capi Classic Rib terracotta pot—the warm natural tone enhances the purity of white and creates a southern atmosphere.
- For a summer balcony planter, pair it with light ornamental grasses like Stipa or Pennisetum—the movement of the feathery inflorescences contrasts with the strict umbels of Agapanthus.
Cut a few flower stalks to make a summer bouquet—Agapanthus umbels last nearly a week in a vase and add a graphic touch to floral arrangements.
Verdeia Tips
- Cut faded flower stalks at the base of the clump: this encourages new flower stems and extends flowering by several weeks—an unpruned Agapanthus wastes energy producing seeds.
- Overwinter potted plants in a cool place: in regions where frost drops below -5 °C, bring the pot indoors to a veranda, bright garage, or cold greenhouse, reducing watering to a minimum until spring.
- Divide the clump every 4 to 5 years: in spring, remove the plant from its pot and separate the rhizomes into sections each with 3 to 5 shoots to rejuvenate and multiply it easily.
