Frequently Asked Questions
Why do the buds on my Camellia fall off before blooming? Three main causes: lack of water during bud formation, sudden temperature changes, or moving the plant while buds are developing. Keep its location stable from October, do not move it until after flowering, and maintain regular watering with non-calcareous water.
Why are the leaves on my Camellia turning yellow? Yellowing is almost always chlorosis caused by lime in the water or soil. Switch to rainwater or filtered water and be sure to use a potting mix for ericaceous plants (pH 5-6.5). Camellia is very sensitive to lime.

🌸 Soft pink blooms • 🍃 Glossy evergreen foliage • 🌤️ Ideal partial shade • 💧 Regular watering • 📏 H45 cm | Pot Ø15 cm • ❄️ Hardy down to -15°C • 🐝 Bee-friendly • 🐾 Non-toxic
The Camellia japonica 'Lady Campbell', or Pink Camellia, is an outdoor evergreen shrub native to the mountainous forests of East Asia. Its soft pink semi-double flowers with golden centers bloom from February to April — when most outdoor plants are still dormant. Its glossy dark green foliage remains decorative all year round.
Compact size, hardy down to -15°C, and perfectly suited for pot cultivation, it is ideal on a balcony or terrace facing north, east, or west. Discover it in our Camellia collection and our selection of outdoor flowering plants.
Which Camellia variety to choose?
All the varieties in our catalog share the same hardiness and care — it is the color and size that distinguish them:
- Camellia japonica 'Lady Campbell' (this plant) — soft pink semi-double flowers, compact size H45 cm | Pot Ø15 cm, early blooming. The smallest and most delicate.
- Camellia japonica 'Nuccio's Gem' — perfect double white flowers, medium size H65 cm. The purest and most classic.
- Camellia japonica 'Black Lace' — deep dark red flowers, medium size H65 cm. The most intense and dramatic.
- Camellia japonica 'Bonomiana' — bicolored pink and white flowers, medium size H65 cm. The most original.
The Lady Campbell is the only compact variety in our catalog — the natural choice for a balcony or terrace with limited space.
Exposure & location
The Camellia japonica naturally grows under forest cover — it prefers coolness and filtered light, and does not tolerate direct sun and dry heat well.
- Ideal exposure: partial shade — balconies or terraces facing north, east, or west.
- Avoid: direct afternoon sun that burns the leaves and causes flower buds to drop, windy locations, lime-rich soils.
- In pot: special ericaceous compost (pH 5–6.5) is essential — it is very sensitive to lime.
- Hardiness: resistant down to -15°C — protect the pot from frost with a winter cover during the first years.
Do not move it during bud formation — the slightest change in orientation or temperature can cause buds to drop before opening.
Watering & care
- Watering: regular — keep the substrate fresh and slightly moist without excess or dryness.
- Frequency: 2 to 3 times a week in summer, once a week in winter depending on rainfall.
- Water: non-calcareous water is essential — rainwater, filtered, or left to stand for 24 hours. Calcium causes leaf yellowing (chlorosis).
- Fertilizer: fertilizer for ericaceous plants in spring after flowering and in summer — never in autumn or winter.
- Pruning: light pruning after flowering to maintain a compact shape — remove faded flowers and dead branches.
- Repotting: every 2–3 years in spring into a slightly larger pot with ericaceous potting soil.
Water more generously during the flower bud formation period — lack of water at this stage is the main cause of bud drop before flowering. Check out our complete watering guide to master frequency according to the season.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The Camellia 'Lady Campbell' is a cold-season plant — it takes over when other outdoor plants are resting, making it a strategic decorative element on a balcony or terrace.
- Solo on a balcony: in a white glazed ceramic or terracotta pot, it creates an immediate floral focal point from the end of winter. Discover our ideas in our balconies and terraces selection.
- In acid-loving plant arrangements: pair it with an Azalea or a Hydrangea — same soil requirements, complementary flowering seasons.
- Zen atmosphere: pair it with a Japanese Maple for a duo with a sober and contrasting Japanese-inspired aesthetic.
Its flowering from February to April takes over when the garden is still asleep — keep this in mind to ensure continuous color on your terrace all year round.
Verdeia tips
- Yellow leaves: check water first — chlorosis (yellowing) is almost always due to lime in the water or substrate, not a watering problem. Switch to non-calcareous water and ericaceous potting soil before making other adjustments.
- Buds falling before opening — three main causes: lack of water during bud formation, sudden temperature changes, or moving the plant while budding. Stabilize its location from October and do not move it until after flowering.
- Brown spots on flowers — caused by morning frost or excessive rain on open flowers. Protect with a light cover on very cold nights during flowering or shelter under an awning.
- Do not prune in autumn — flower buds form in autumn on the current year's wood. Pruning in autumn removes the following winter's flowers. Always prune just after flowering, in April-May.
- Honey-producing and beneficial for biodiversity — its early flowering from February to April is a valuable resource for the first pollinators emerging after winter, when few plants are still blooming.
- 🐾 Non-toxic — Camellia is safe for dogs and cats.
