Camellia japonica 'Bonomiana' – Ø19 cm – 65 cm
🌸 Winter flowering • 🌿 Evergreen shrub • 🌡️ Hardy to -12 °C • 🪴 Ideal for balcony & terrace • 🌱 Acidic soil
The Camellia japonica ‘Bonomiana’ is an evergreen shrub of timeless elegance, valued for its glossy dark green foliage and soft pink double flowers marbled with white. In late winter and early spring, it brightens balconies, patios, and terraces when almost nothing else blooms.
Compact, refined, and perfectly suited for pot cultivation, this camellia is ideal for adding a poetic and luxurious touch to small shaded urban spaces.
Exposure & placement
- Exposure: partial shade to bright shade.
- Avoid direct blazing sunlight and cold drafts.
- Perfect for east or north-facing balconies, sheltered terraces, and urban patios.
- Ideal for creating a cool and elegant corner even in low sunlight areas.
Watering & maintenance
- Watering: keep the soil slightly moist at all times, especially in pots.
- Substrate: ericaceous soil or well-drained acidic mix.
- In summer: monitor drought periods and water more regularly.
- Mulching recommended to retain moisture at the base and protect roots.
- Special ericaceous fertilizer in spring to support flowering and foliage.
Growing tips
- Winter: in pots, protect the root ball in case of severe frost (winter veil, pot insulation).
- Flower buds: avoid moving the camellia during bud formation — this can cause upcoming flowers to drop.
- Pruning: remove faded flowers and disorderly branches after flowering. No severe pruning necessary.
- Repotting: every 2–3 years in a slightly larger container, always with acidic substrate.
Association & ambiance ideas
- With Japanese maples (Acer palmatum) for a zen and colorful atmosphere.
- With ferns and hostas for a lush woodland effect in shaded areas.
- With azaleas and rhododendrons: same acidic soil needs, complementary floral palette.
- With hydrangeas for a romantic and generous terrace.
Urban decor ideas
- In a white, pastel, or sand ceramic pot on a shaded balcony → highlights its bicolored flowers.
- In an urban patio, accompanied by ferns → fresh and calming atmosphere.
- As a centerpiece on a terrace → its winter blooming becomes the visual focus of the decor.
Verdeia Tips
- Always keep the substrate slightly moist but without stagnant water in the saucer.
- Preferably use rainwater (less calcareous) to preserve soil acidity.
- Pine bark mulch = protected moisture + naturally acidified soil.
- Avoid direct full sun in summer: the delicate flowers can burn.
The camellia ‘Bonomiana’ is an ideal plant to bring color and elegance to an urban space from late winter, when everything is still gray.
