🌸 Large white flowers striped with pink • 🌿 Vigorous climbing plant • ☀️ Sun to partial shade • 💧 Regular watering • 🎯 Double flowering May-June and July-September • ❄️ Hardy • 🐾 Toxic to pets
The Clematis Nelly Moser is one of the best-known large-flowered clematis — its spectacular pale pink flowers striped with a bright pink central band make it an immediately recognizable decorative climber. It blooms twice a year: a first abundant flowering in May-June, a second between July and September after pruning. Mature height: 2 to 3 m. Pot size D15 x H65 cm at delivery.
Hardy, vigorous, and easy to grow. Discover it in our clematis collection.
Which Clematis variety to choose?
Our catalog offers several clematis with distinct colors and characters:
- Clematis Nelly Moser (this plant) — large pale pink flowers striped with bright pink, double flowering. The best known and most classic.
- Clematis 'Miss Bateman' — large pure white flowers with burgundy stamens. The most refined.
- Clematis 'Justa' — large lilac flowers. The most romantic.
- Clematis 'Niobe' — large bright red flowers. The most spectacular.
- Clematis armandii 'Apple Blossom' — pale pink fragrant flowers, hardy. The only evergreen variety.
Other varieties are available in our climbing plants collection — Montana, Hagley Hybrid, and more.
Exposure & location
The Clematis Nelly Moser has a well-known trait among gardeners: it prefers partial shade to preserve its colors — in full sun, the central pink band fades quickly.
- Ideal exposure: partial shade to sun — preferably an east or west-facing wall.
- Feature: the flowers retain their color better when sheltered from midday sun — a northeast-facing wall is ideal for this variety.
- Support: trellis, pergola, fence, post — the main stem climbs by clinging. Provide support at planting time.
- Shade at the base: classic clematis rule — stems like the sun, roots prefer coolness. Mulch the base or plant a low-growing plant in front.
- Soil: rich, well-drained, and fresh — universal potting soil with compost.
The Nelly Moser is one of the few large-flowered clematis that thrives in north or northeast exposure — a valuable advantage for less sunny facades.
Watering & care
- Watering: regular — keep the soil moist, especially during the first year and during blooming.
- Frequency: 2 to 3 times per week in summer, reduced in winter.
- Fertilizer: liquid fertilizer for flowering plants, once a month in spring and summer.
- Pruning: after the first bloom (June), lightly prune the stems by about one-third — this triggers the second bloom. In late winter, prune to 30-50 cm from the ground to encourage vigorous growth.
- Hardy: frost-resistant — can stay outdoors all year round.
Pruning after the first bloom is the key step to get a beautiful second summer bloom. Without pruning, the plant often blooms only once a year. Check out our new plant care guide to get off to a good start.
Decor ideas & combinations
The Nelly Moser Clematis dresses vertical supports with elegance — its large flowers are visible from afar.
- On a trellis or fence: it quickly covers a large area and blooms abundantly twice per season.
- In combination: pair it with a Parthenocissus for a green wall that stays decorative all year — the Nelly Moser blooms, and the Parthenocissus takes over with its autumn colors.
- In a pot: possible in a large pot of at least 30-40 cm with a trellis — ideal for a balcony or terrace.
Its large pale pink-white flowers pair especially well with white or pink climbing roses — a classic and very decorative combination.
Verdeia Tips
- Shade the base, sun on the stems — this is the fundamental rule for clematis. Mulch the base at planting to keep the roots cool, even though the stems will climb toward the light.
- Prune after the first flowering — this triggers the second flowering. Without pruning, you will often have only one flowering per year instead of two.
- The Nelly Moser fades in the sun — its flowers keep their bright pink stripe in partial shade. In full sun, they quickly fade to white. Choose a partly shaded spot for the most beautiful flowers.
- Install the support before planting — once the clematis is in place, it is difficult to install a trellis without damaging the roots. Plan the support at planting. See our care calendar for seasonal best practices.
- ⚠️ Toxic to animals — clematis is toxic if ingested by cats and dogs. Keep young plants out of reach. See our plants and pets guide for suitable alternatives.
