Frequently Asked Questions
Why are the tips of my Dracaena surculosa's leaves turning brown? The main cause is the fluoride and chlorine in tap the water — switch to filtered or rested the water for 24 hours, and mist the foliage regularly to compensate for the dry air from heating.
Can Dracaena surculosa be placed in a low-light room? No, surculosa needs more light than other dracaenas — in insufficient light, new leaves grow with fewer spots and the foliage gradually loses its distinctive speckled character.

✨ Dark green leaves spotted with gold and white • 🎋 Thin and rigid stems reminiscent of bamboo • 🌤️ Bright indirect light • 💧 Moderate watering • 2 sizes available
The Dracaena surculosa — gold dust dragon tree — is a dragon tree native to tropical Africa radically different from all other dracaenas. While its cousins form bare trunks with a tuft of leaves at the top, the surculosa develops a network of thin and rigid stems — similar to light bamboo — bearing clusters of dark green oval leaves spotted with yellow and white, as if sprinkled with gold. The better the light conditions, the more intense and pronounced the spots. It is one of the most original and easiest indoor plants in the catalog.
Available in two sizes — H55 cm compact for desk and shelf, H110 cm for a statement impact in a living room or entrance.
Which dragon tree to choose?
The catalog offers several dragon trees with very distinct silhouettes. Here is how to place the surculosa among the available varieties:
- Dracaena surculosa (this plant) — thin stems reminiscent of bamboo, oval leaves spotted with gold and white, very airy habit. The most original and different variety of all other dragon trees.
- Dracaena marginata — very thin leaves edged with red on long bare very graphic stems. The most sculptural and contemporary variety.
- Dracaena 'Lemon Lime' — large variegated lime green and lemon yellow leaves, very bright. The choice to bring color into a dark room.
- Dracaena 'Anita' — long slender dark green drooping leaves, thin and slender trunks. The most graceful and airy variety.
- Dracaena 'Compacta' branched — very short dark green leaves in dense rosettes on multiple trunks. The most architectural and structuring choice.
- Dracaena bicolor — green and red striped leaves, upright habit. The choice for a very bold bicolor graphic.
Exposure & placement
Surculosa needs bright indirect light to fully express its spotted foliage — this is its main difference from other dracaenas that are more shade tolerant. In insufficient light, new leaves grow with fewer spots and the foliage gradually loses its distinctive graphic character. Our guide on light and humidity helps you find the right spot.
- Exposure: bright indirect light — east or west windowsill; avoid prolonged direct sun.
- Ideal for: bright living room, office, well-lit bathroom, entrance with window — anywhere with good light without being harsh.
- Temperature: 18 to 26 °C — avoid cold drafts and temperatures below 12 °C.
- Humidity: mist the foliage regularly — surculosa appreciates a slightly humid atmosphere.
The more surculosa receives bright indirect light, the more intense and numerous the golden and white spots — place it as close as possible to a bright window to reveal its full decorative potential and maintain its distinctive spotted character.
Watering & care
The surculosa is sensitive to fluoride and chlorine in tap water — over time, these minerals cause browning of leaf tips, one of the most common problems with dracaenas. Use filtered or rested water for 24 hours. To adjust your care according to the seasons, our monthly maintenance calendar details the steps for each period.
- Watering: once a week in summer — let the substrate dry slightly on the surface between waterings; reduce significantly in winter.
- Water: filtered or left to rest for 24h — avoid tap water that is too hard or fluoridated.
- Humidity: mist the foliage 1 to 2 times a week, especially in winter with heating.
- Fertilizer: diluted green plant fertilizer every 2 to 3 months in spring and summer — never in excess.
- Repotting: every 2 to 3 years in spring in a light, well-drained substrate.
If leaf tips brown, switch immediately to filtered or demineralized Water — this is the cause of the problem in the vast majority of cases, and the situation improves with new growth.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The surculosa is a texture plant — its thin intertwined stems and spotted leaves create an airy, graphic volume very different from large-leaf plants. It fits into varied compositions depending on the room.
- For a highly contrasting graphic trio in bright light, combine the surculosa with a Calathea orbifolia with large striped leaves and a silver Aglaonema Silver Bay — three very distinct foliage textures (spotted/striped/marbled), three different heights, same tolerance for indirect light.
- For maximum volume contrast, pair the surculosa with the Dracaena marginata — the thin spotted stems of the surculosa and the long bare stems topped with red and green tufts of the marginata create two radically different dragon tree silhouettes within a coherent plant palette.
- For a structuring background behind the surculosa XXL, the Strelitzia Nicolai with its large upright fronds offers a very clear contrast in size and shape — the large fan-shaped leaves of the Strelitzia and the airy lightness of the surculosa stems create two very complementary layers.
- To enhance the spotted foliage in a textured pot, the panier Jorck noir provides a matte dark background that highlights the golden and white spots on the leaves — the contrast between the black of the panier and the gold of the foliage is the clearest color match for this variety.
The surculosa H110 cm with its many intertwined stems creates an almost sculptural volume in a living room — place it in a corner with accent lighting from below to highlight the play of stems and reveal the density of its spotted foliage.
Verdeia tips
- Give it more light than other dracaenas: surculosa needs bright indirect light to maintain its golden and white spots — unlike marginata or compacta which tolerate partial shade, surculosa gradually loses its distinctive spotted character in spaces that are too dark, with new leaves growing almost solid.
- Always use filtered or rested water for 24 hours: surculosa is particularly sensitive to fluoride and chlorine in tap water — the resulting browning of leaf tips is the most common and preventable problem with this variety; switching to filtered water solves it within a few weeks.
- Mist the foliage twice a week in winter: the dry air from heating is another common cause of browning and loss of vigor — regular misting restores the humid microclimate of the tropical forest where surculosa originates and maintains the brightness of its golden spots.
