🌸 Frosted pink flowers that deepen to deep pink • 🍃 Evergreen blue-green foliage • 📅 Flowering from December to March • ⛅ Partial shade • ❄️ Hardy down to -23 °C • 🪴 Large clump delivered in a Ø19 cm pot
The Helleborus 'Angel Glow' is a hybrid hellebore whose flowers change colour throughout the winter. A European horticultural selection, it flowers from December onwards among the flowering plants in the catalogue, at a time of year when balconies and terraces are almost empty.
Its pink buds open into soft, frosted pink flowers facing outward, gradually turning deep pink tinged with green. They bloom from December to March on sturdy stems, above tough blue-green foliage. Delivered in a 19 cm pot and 50 cm tall, it already forms a full clump.
Which hellebore should you choose?
Nine hellebores in the catalogue, taking turns throughout the winter:
- 'Angel Glow' Hellebore (this plant) — single frosted pink flowers that turn deep pink and green, from December to March. The flowers with the most changing hues.
- Christmas Rose 'Christmas Carol' — single pure white flowers, from late October to March. The earliest.
- Christmas Rose 'Diamonfire' — single cream-white and green flowers with dusty pink undertones, from December to March. The most vigorous, in bouquets on red stems.
- Lenten Rose 'Dacaya' — single medium-pink flowers streaked with burgundy, from February to April. The most flowering, delivered as a large clump.
- Lenten Rose 'Double Ellen Pink' — double pale pink flowers speckled with purple, from February to April. The most nuanced.
- Lenten Rose 'Double Ellen White' — double snow-white flowers, from February to April. The brightest in the shade.
- Lenten Rose 'Double Ellen Red' — double burgundy-purple flowers, from February to April. The most intense.
- Majorca Hellebore 'Purple Marble' — single cream-green flowers washed with purple, from January to April. Blue-green foliage marbled with cream.
- ‘Silver Dollar’ silver hellebore — single cream-green flowers with a yellow center, from February to April. The most silvery foliage.
Christmas roses and Lenten roses, such as Angel Glow, withstand intense cold; hellebores with marbled or silvery foliage are chosen for a sheltered balcony.
Exposure & location
It likes soft light and tolerates a few hours of sun, but its flowers last longer sheltered from cold winds, which mark the petals.
- Exposure: partial shade, morning sun, or filtered light.
- Location: east-facing balcony or terrace, sheltered wall base protected from the wind, home entrance.
- Hardiness in a pot: down to -23 °C — it stays outdoors all winter.
- Soil type: fresh, rich in humus and well drained, neutral to alkaline.
Its flowers face outward rather than toward the ground: near an entrance door, you can enjoy its color changes every time you pass by.
Watering & care
In a pot, hellebore needs a fresh but never waterlogged substrate: testing the substrate with your finger shows when to water, while yellowing leaves apart from old leaves often signal excess water.
- Watering: moderate — keep the substrate fresh in spring and summer, and reduce watering considerably in winter.
- Water: tap water is suitable.
- Fertilizer: apply organic fertilizer in autumn.
- Pruning: cut damaged leaves at the base and, after flowering, remove faded stems.
- Repotting: rarely — into a pot at least 25 cm in diameter if the roots emerge from the bottom, in early autumn.
Wear gloves when pruning: hellebore sap can irritate the skin.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
Its frosty pink flowers and blue-green foliage add softness to less sunny corners, especially on a shady balcony in the middle of winter.
- For a winter pink palette, place a ‘Eve Price’ laurustinus alongside it — it blooms pale pink at the same time as the hellebore and creates an evergreen shrub-height backdrop.
- For a woodland composition, pair it with a Korean fern — its dark green foliage brings out the bluish tone of the leaves.
- To dress the edge of the pot, plant a Carex 'Ice Dance' — its fine cream-edged leaves contrast with the broad, leathery leaves.
- To enhance the pot, choose the taupe Capi Nature Groove pot — a warm, neutral shade that complements the pink without overpowering it.
Cut at the end of flowering, when they have developed their pink and green tones, the flowers last longer in a vase than when freshly opened.
Verdeia tips
- Let the flowers age on the plant: they develop their deep pink and green tones as they mature. Cut too early, and you lose half the spectacle.
- Protect it from the wind: it tolerates frost, but cold winds damage open flowers. Against a wall or solid railing, the flowers remain intact. Our guide to cold-hardy plants helps you create a winter balcony around it.
- Plant in groups: two or three plants in a large planter create a flowering mass that can be seen from afar in the middle of winter.
